Upscale hip cajun, neo-soul restuarant & adjacent bar/club – Great food, but still finding their own style and unique ambience. I keep checking in if only to enjoy the soulful menu and people watch. There has always been some stunning women in the place each time I visit.

Mussels and fries – Stick to a typical Belgian meal with a choice of 3 mussel dishes, fries (served with 3 different sauces) and a Belgian ale on tap and you will not be deceived.

On Monday, oysters are $1.00 a piece and not always the freshest to my taste but still good and an excellent value.

I have tried the hamburger at the bar and it hits the spot with one of the many ales available on tap. The place gets busy and noisy and service is sometimes not the most efficient or quickest. Week end nights are very busy with little parking in the street and long queues outside.

Watch your tab – I used to go to this place when it first opened and it was great. Now it is too busy (slow service at the bar) and they over charge you. Watch out if you use a credit card because they give you receipt that does not show the amount of drinks you are paying for.

Was once great, now pretencious and complacent – I agree with ckyelland, initially Luka's was the bomb with it's tasty Belgium fries and beer. I loved going there on Mondays for $1/oyster night. I'd taken friend there visiting from other parts of the Bay Area and gave it rave reviews.

Now that it's catering to the Paramount crowd, reservations are required, you can't just walk in and get a quick bite to eat after a hard days work. All of the seats are reserved now. They'll seat you in the dingy bar area in the other room though but you'll still pay the high dining room prices.

Well, apparently they know they're the bomb and are getting complacent. I can eat only so much of the Mac and cheese and fries. The hostes was a very unfriendly and pretensious and almost spoiled the dinner for me but I had to let go because I had invited a group of out of towners there. I was really embarased by the way we were treated.

I went back one more time to give it a chance. Again, stuck up hostess, same old same old. I have to say their food is delicious but they need to add more variety. After spending $80 on just appetizers and beer this time, it's time to find another tasty establishment in Oakland.

Best burgers around.. – Love this place..All of their food is excellent. I haven't had a bad bartender there yet; It's great for lunch or dinner. The only downside is the price, $10 dollar burger, but well worth it. The best macaroni and cheese I have ever had, excellent sea food salad, and great specialty drinks.

Started strong, but definitely losing momentum. – Downtown Oakland needs more businesses like Luka's, there's no doubt about that. My first couple of visits to Luka's were wonderful. Exceptional service, meticulously prepared dishes, delicious cocktails and a stellar beer list. Unfortunately, Luka's now seems to be coasting along on the fact that they are one of the only higher-end eateries/nightspots in this area of downtown Oakland. Their proximity to the Paramount Theater and the inital rave reviews undoubtedly fueled their popularity as well. Unfortunately, my last few visits to Luka's have been utterly disappointing in all respects. The initial greeting has gone from friendly to pretentious, the food has gone from delicious to mediocre in most respects, and a couple of times, I've had to walk out when I found it impossible to get the bartender's attention for drink service. Luka's had great potential as a bright neighborhood spot in a sleepy area of Oakland, but someone should let them know that they can't skate along forever on previously good reviews and the fact that many people will likely continue to go there for lack of other options in the area. As other trendy nightspots start opening in this neighborhood, Luka?s might find that they need to step up their effort again. I won?t be back until it happens.

Luka's = LOVELY! – I've been to Luka's seeral times now and I have to say, it's always fun and upbeat. I went months ago after a client recommended we meet there to have a little girls' night out with friends. I had some nice beer, the DJ was bumpin' and the peeps, well, the peeps were what I always expect and get in Oakland - an eclectic mix of various ethnicities and lifestyles. It's right up my alley! I have also run into old acquaintances from "back in the day" at Luka's also. It's nice to see that now, as we're mostly in our mid- to late-30s, we still know how to let loose and have a little fun.

The atmostphere at Luka's is so mellow! People hang out in booths and eat, stand around drinking and socializing, or get their groove on. I've seen all races, colors, ethnicities, AGES and fashion senses at Luka's and it's ALL good. People mind their business and usually are quite friendly (even the guys who still pushed up on me AFTER I told them I'm married were very nice) It's got that old 90s hip-hop venue feeling. One almost expects to see people sitting on the floor wearing backpacks while performing Spoken Word as the incense wafts into the sky.

Luka's is also a great place to take a date. If I wasn't married, it would be a great venue to meet up with a new flame, internet connection, or late-night hook-up. All scenarios fit Luka's. If you're a lady, you might even happen upon that once-in-a-lifetime type of guy who buys you drinks.

Interesting find on a weekend night – Came across Luka by chance on a Saturday night before catching a show at nearby Paramount Theatre. From the outside, not sure what to expect. Inside has a lively bar with a good selection of beer, a billards table, and servers in black ready to assist. I had the mussels marinere, friend had the ahi tuna salad and fries w/ three dipping sauces. Yummy! Shared the chocolate molten cake with vanilla bean ice cream. Mix of young and old, families and singles on a Saturday evening. Prices seem a bit high for some courses, but overall, a good find in this area.

Hostess without the "Most-ess" – I've been to Luka's several times now; the atmosphere is great, the food is fantastic, and the drinks are good without having to go far out of the way. HOWEVER, the hostess was rude. To my horror, she yelled at my friends. We are thirty-somethings, not children. Her excuse was she was not feeling well. No excuses! You are the hostess, you are the first impression for a "good" dining experience. It was my friends' first time dining there, and this behavior did not leave a welcoming impression for them to return. Fortunately, once we were seated at our table, the waitress was exceptional, and more than made up for the rude start of the evening. Luka's please do something with your hostess. If she is sick, or is attitude prone, just rid of her. Your restaurant is too good for this type of behavior.

User review by andyb7 – i could not believe the service at this place. i ordered the cheese plate and it came with only cheese - no bread, nuts, dates, etc. you'd think for $8 you'd get more that 4 slices of cheese on a white plate?!? i have endulged in numerous cheese plates at various restaurants and have NEVER come accross anything like this! i returned back to the kitchen. the waiters were all looking at me and wispering. then when i go the bill, she charged me!

it may be a hot spot for a drink and some good music as some of the rotating DJ's are great....but for food - stay away.
