Fantastic French Food !! – I have to say I simply LOVE this restaurant, one of the best French places I've ever dined. I was visiting San Francisco for a few days (from NYC) and took a shot at this place. From the outside it didn't look like much (especially since it was so foggy that night), but the inside decor was quite nice and there were a bunch of people inside so it put me at ease. My date and I shared the yummy Scottish smoked salmon, the delectable escargot, and the interestingly different and sweet homemade foie gras. The best part came when I ordered the scallops - they were hands down the BEST scallops I have ever tasted, and I still dream about them. For the dessert my date and I shared the floating island and a tart which were a nice end to our meal.

The service I also must note was just excellent. Our waitress was so polite and charming, we even got into a short conversation about NY. If I ever return to San Fran, I'm Definitely coming back to eat at Chouchou!!

Oh dear, so the Maitre d' kisses you several million times, so what? That's the least he could do after doing worse (you can imagine what goes here) and that came BEFORE the kissing.

We had arranged for a large dinner party, pre-planned, pre-arranged menu and everything else.

What we got was a completely altered menu, not what we agreed to, and what could we do? We had a large party and should we get all ugly and ruin our evening right then and there?

Watch out for this place. They're not all they pretend to be.

Go here! – I?ve been here before and each time, I have had a very pleasant dining experience. On top of that, did you know this restaurant is teaming up with StreetSmart4kids? It?s actually really cool what they?re doing. I just heard about how SS4K is a nonprofit organization that helps underprivileged teens stay healthy. They are running their ?Dine Out and Donate? campaign here (as well as approx. 70 other restaurants in SF) during October and early November. After having a fabulous dining experience, just fill out the donation form when paying the check (minimum donation $3). This is perfect for people like me, who love to eat out all the time and also like to give back to the community. Check it out for yourself on the StreetSmart4Kids website!

Rude waiter ruins evening! – We were celebrating by birthday and chose ChouChou, a neighborhood French bistro. We had reservations although it was not necessary on a Monday night. We were greeted rather coldly and told to sit "where ever". Our waiter was rude and condescending. He suggested 2 different wines "if we didn't want to spend too much". When we checked the wine list he had suggested 2 of the most expensive wines, both over $70. When we didn't follow his advise and selected other wine he told us "That's awful......I wouldn't drink that!" His attitude ruined our evening. The $200 + spent and the treatment left a very sour taste for this restaurant.

Believing in second chances, I emailed the restaurant with my experience. I received no reply. Is this such a common occurance that they don't have time to respond to all the complaints? Perhaps they just don't care.

The one star is for the dessert which did match expectations.

If you want to dine at a lovely neighborhood French bistro try Chapeau on Clement. It is a warm hospitable enviornment with delicious food and a charming owner/chef.

Skip Chou Chou!

Great food and wine! Not too expensive - all good! – My friend recommended this restaurant.

The food was great especially the duck. Great wine and not too expensive.

When I'm back in SFO I will definitely go there again.

Big mussels, weak service! – My boyfriend and I went there for the first time for Sunday brunch. The place was busy but there were only two people working the floor. We were hungry and weren't crazy about having to wait as long as we did to order, but once we did the food arrived quickly. We were both about to order the salmon benedict, but I switched my order to the mussels w/ frites after seeing it at the next table. The mussels were huge, succulent, and plentiful in a delicate yet flavorful sauce of white wine, shallots, garlic and light cream. We asked for extra bread to dip into the sauce. They were so good that we asked about them and were told that they're imported from the Mediterrenean. Oh, and the salmon benedict was good but the hollandaise was unremakable. The frites were also great. About the service: the waitress was unapologetic for her slowness and for some small mistakes she made. My boyfriend and I feel that a friendly demeanor can be a stand-in for good service but our waitress provided neither. There also seemed to be some tension between our waitress and the other floor server, which didn't help the ambiance. All in all we had a great experience and will go back hoping for better service.

great chocolate tarts! – I am very very picky about dessert. I am not a big fan of tarts but the tart here was ummm.... yum.

Appetizers were great also. When I go back there, I probably skip entrees.

Don't be mistaken, the staff CAN too be snobby – We've tried Chou Chou 2-3x in the past for lunch and on Valentine's Day. The lunch was great and the chocolate tart not to be missed. But, the food on Valentine's Day was a dissappointment. The place was packed so probably the kitchen couldn't execute the meals well. I stopped by to pick up a fruit tart for a potluck lunch and the waiter, Vincent, was tepid.

He rattled off the prices for the tarts and left to attend tables. Then returned after I waited a bit to box the fruit tart. After paying for it, he just said, "there you go.". NO thank you. How utterly rude. He was only waiting on 2 tables, so it wasn't as if he was swamped. You'd think

I was bothering him for stopping by to purchase a tart.

As for the tart, it was a thin mixed fruit tart on top of a crunchy heavily glazed crust, much like a crunchy cookie, light and delicious. Bit. their chocolate tarts are better.

Great Cal-french! – Finally got myself and my partner to Chou Chou! Typical of Forest ville area, we were shrouded in a thick layer of fog, but that only added to the romaticism of the place. I really liked the french-bistroish, non-pretentious ambience, lit with orange lights. We had 2 appetizers; salad and escargots (Californiased but good), and for Entree; the lamb and pork. Lamb was perfect and every dish seemed like it woud be incomplete or lacking without a little bit of every accompaniment on the plate. I cannot say enuff about the desserts(tarts). Whatever you choose should be great! As another reviewer said, "FRENCH, WITHOUT THE ATTITUDE"

Great French Food without the French attitude – What a Great little French Restaurant. I've been there for Brunch and Dinner. The staff is helpful and prompt; the food is hearty, tasty and yummy. The wines are well paired, the coffee oh so good, and the desserts are amazing, Tart heaven. The ambiance is warm, friendly, and even though the tables are close, it is very intimate. Between my wife and I we've tried everything at least once, and pretty much everything is good.
