Delicious sandwiches for breakfast and lunch. Giant chocolate chip cookies are awesome!
Guava cheese pie. Need I say more? Also, their juices are very good!
I spent two weeks in Spain this summer and when I got back to LA, I CRAVED cafe con leche. Cafe Tropical's version is the next best thing. Oh, and while everyone loves the cheese and guava empanadas, let me tell you about the ginormous peanut butter cookies, which are awesome, too.
Silverlake Cafe Bakery – Don't come to Cafe Tropical expecting fine dining. It's a very small cafe with counter service. I came looking for the famed guava cheese pie but didn't realize it was more of a turnover than a pie. They offer a variety of salads and pressed sandwiches but the pork was a little dry. Some positives are their coffee and the cookies (as big as your head!) sold only for a dollar.
Neighborhood regulars satisfy pastry cravings at this airy Latin bakery. – In Short
A disheveled hipster crowd comes for a daytime caffeine fix; evenings, the cafe hosts 12-step meetings. The bakery menu features Napoleons made from thin layers of puff pastry and rich, but not overly sweet, cream. A house favorite, guava-cheese pie is cream cheese and tart guava paste layered between croissant-like bread. Buttery and crisp Cuban-style sandwiches include the classic medianoche, spilling over with thinly sliced roast pork, ham, cheese and pickles.
Best Coffee in L.A. – Lightning fast, personable staff serve up the best (and the strongest) cafe con leche in town. Pastries are fresh everyday and priced so reasonably it's hard not to order enough to cover your table. Sandwiches are great. Enjoy watching the neighborhood newbies mingle with old school Silver Lakers.
Excellent Coffee, Tasty Breakfast Sandwiches – Cafe Tropical has very good coffee. I also love their croissant sandwiches. They bake all their own goods, and always have fresh roses decorating the place. Parking is on the street, and can sometimes be hard to come by, but I have always been able to find a spot.
1 thing I really miss about Cali,.. – I lived in SilverLake on Micheltorena St. in '96 & '97. Everyday I got off of the bus and went to Cafe Tropical. I even took walks down the Marathon Hill just to go there! No matter how broke I was, and couldn't "eat-out",.I made it my business to get a Sandwich-Cubano, and a Cafe con Leche.I've even had some yummy batidos (milk-shakes) from there too. I'm originally from Hoboken, NJ and had to move back home in '97,..but I'm living in in FL now with my family(Hubby & 2 kids). I'll go there any time if I'm in the Cali-area. It'll be 2am & I'll be craving the food from Cafe Tropical just "out of the blue!" If I decided to move back to Cali,..I'd def. live close by to my old apt. just to have the convenience of Great Authentic Food from Cafe Tropical! *Mone*
coffee shake – no better coffee in town then at Cafe Tropical. oh and the turkey sandwiche oh so good
cafe con leche! – Yes! It's universally agreed that the cafe con leche is wonderful, as is the pecan pie. Don't order a smoothie-- all froth and not much fruit or yogurt. Well, you can't have everything.
2 best morning pastries – Cafe con leche here is indeed delicious, but Cafe Tropical also serves my favorite morning pastries in L.A. These still-warm chocolate croissants are unparalleled, and a wedge of the guava-and-cream cheese pie is an authentic Cuban delight. There is plenty of seating inside, with tables large enough to spread out breakfast and a newspaper. Outside, there's a handful of ugly plastic chairs lining the curb. Save yourself from the exhaust fumes--stay inside if you'll be lingering.
Sayonara Starbucks! – Before Starbucks takes over the city, patronize this beloved Cuban bakery/coffee house. The cafe con leche is a strong, frothy concoction, that will leave you caffeinated for the whole day.
