My disappointed visit on June 18th 2013. I used to go to MJ's a few years ago and it was the place to be on Tuesday nights, it was pack, lots of gogo boys, great music and shirtless bartenders. I'm sorry guys, but what happened? I know you can bring back what it used to be. I talked to at least 10 guys that night and 90% of the guys said the same thing. They were just there because it was the closes place to be and not because they really wanted to be. I requested the fog machine to bring people in the mood to dance and DJ Stalker Channing couldn't find the promoter, one hour later I asked again and She said the fog machine was broken (My personal opinion was that she didn't want to deal with that problem anymore) Anyways, I'll give it another try in a few months to see if those bartender are shirtless, great music, lights and the fog machine of course. Don't let me down MJ's.
I agree with Ral, why did you guys made the dance floor smaller. Bring it back the way it used to be.
This club promised a whole and delivered a little !!. Cover charges of $15.00 to enter the club. But I paid thinking their ad on the internet regarding Hot Fridays would be worth it. Waited from 9:40 to 12:00 AM. No dancers !!. At the end only one old, fat extra ugly guy started dancing. Be careful it is not worth the money. Added to this one Heineken was $6.00 and the waiters at the bar do expect tips !!
FINALLY A GREAT HAPPY HOUR – Drink are priced right! You can actually walk out with some change. Francisco is my fav!
Don't spend your money!!!!!!!!!!!! – From somewhat good, to just plain nasty. This place used to be a good dance club on a Saturday night. The music used to be fun as well as the crowd..... I was there last Saturday and the door guys were just rude.... drinks are now tiny, the dancers are pretty pathetic, and the dance club smaller. Parking? there is none after 10:00pm, unless you are willing to park on a dark street 3 or 4 blocks away from the place. Wow! What happened? I was invited to never visit this club ever again. Moving on......
I'd rather go to the Abbey – Literally just got back and was not at all a bit impressed! I went w/ a friend who is gay and he as well was not impressed. The gogo dancers did not know what the hell they were doing except for one. They mostly just stood there and we paid a cover to see them dance...yawn! The hookahs outside were a nice treat, but the "hot Persian boys" that were supposed to be there all night I guess never showed. There were not any good looking men there and my friend agreed. On a good note the bartenders were very friendly and their drinks were pretty stiff, two and i couldn't see straight, I'd say I got my money's worth there! I've been to better bars, I guess on Persian night the word needs to get out to bring in dancers who will actually move and bring in more good looking people, the dj and bartenders know exactly what they're doing, so no problem there....
Friendly Silver Lake gay bar is a welcome addition to the neighborhood's Levi's-and-leather circuit. – The Scene
In a very short time, the new owners of the former Woody's Hyperion have succeeded in resuscitating a long-deserted venue, filling the void left when Detour turned into hipster hang 4100. With all outside light blocked out, MJ's has the vibe of a flame-lit subterranean grotto, and is ornately furnished in cooling, lacquered tones of black, grey and red. Diversions include a pinball machine, pool table, dartboard and endless loops of '70s gay physique films appear on video monitors. Weekend music runs the gamut from speed metal and industrial disco to classic rock and hip-hop, yet the large dance floor doesn't get much use.
MJ's attracts scruffy younger guys and a respectable number of mostly straight women. The sweet-natured--and great-looking--bartenders concoct lethal libations, and when they control the music selection on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, the obscure electronica selection is phenomenal.
Don't Bother – until this year this was a great leather bar that catered to the Silverlake crowd. Now with the new owner its just another cheap knock off of a trashy WEHO bar. This used to be the place to be. Great crowd, great bartenders, no attitude, great music, great pool players. Boy, those were the days. Now its a $7 cover just about everynight. Dont waste your time.
Good Neighorhood Bar/ Entertainment – I wanted to post a review of my assessment of my experience with MJ's this past Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening. Despite parking could be a challenge to those who arrive well after 10pm ( I arrived early Friday evening around 9:30), the employees and Chris (the owner) were very polite and accomodating. While I cannot dispute the previous posters experience, the staff including the bartenders and the dancers are very friendly and outgoing. The music was very good on Friday and Sunday however I was lost on Saturday which I suspect plays current music which I have no knowledge of since I don't listen to the radio. I did not feel the bar was trashy nor filled with attitude or fashinista's but it didn't matter to me, I had a great time.
A Trashy Rip-Off – I've been here several times since it opened (due to the paucity of options in the neighborhood) and always have left disgruntled. I thought the new (2007) ownership might be an improvement but decided my most recent visit would be my last. I was charged $7 at the door, and after asking why was told I was paying for a Wednesday night "dancing boys" show that was supposed to start at 10. At 10:45 there was no sign of any show about to start and I was derided when I asked for my $7 back -- I mean Wednesday's a school night and the poster, when I stumbled across it, promised a 10 p.m. show. I was subject to this derision, mind you, after buying two beers from the stuck-on-himself bartender and standing around in a half-empty bar for 45 minutes waiting for a show to start. Frankly, this place is unprofessionally run and any "hot" cruising atmosphere is ruined by the always-in-attendance West Hollywood fashonistas who insist on bringing their female friends along for the ride. Wrong bar, wrong neighborhood, and trashy in the bad sense.
