Reviews for Potstickers & Boba Tea

A Wonderful Little Neighborhood Restaurant. – When the pizza place my boyfriend and I used to go to shut down, we noticed that what took its place was a little Asian cafe that served Boba Tea drinks. My older sister happens to absolutely LOVE boba tea drinks. So, me being the cool younger sister that I am, I thought we could all go there one day to try it out (and in the process get some bonding time in between my boyfriend and sister).

The day we all went there, it was another "100 degree +" scorcher outside in the lovely land of Dallas, in perhaps one of our hottest and driest summers on record. So, we were definitely looking forward to getting in out of the heat. However, like most of the strip centers in our area, the A/C unit was trying valiantly to slug it out in a dual to the death with the weather, and not quite winning. The fact that the cafe had an open kitchen didn't help either. Even so, it was at least 20 degrees cooler inside, of which I was grateful for. So, we placed our orders for food and drinks and took a seat while they prepared everything for us.

Looking around the restaurant, at the decorations hanging on the walls, the snack food for sale on the counter, I felt that I had just jumped into one of those anime shows I am always watching (okay, I know those are technically Japanese, but let's pretend here for a moment) and landed right in front of one of the many neighborhood food stalls those shows feature so often. It felt foreign, and yet so relaxed and devoid of pretentiousness.

I mentioned earlier that my sister has a great love relationship with boba tea. Well, it seems that she couldn't deal with the anticipation any longer and by that day had already been to the cafe once or twice. While this may seem like an erroneous detail, I assure you it is entirely necessary. Because, even though she had only been there once or twice, the owner/manager Ada remembered her and was speaking to her as if they had long been friends. Since I am a bit of an introvert, and slightly scatter-brained to boot, I found that feat greatly impressive.

That day, the three of us tried both the chicken and the pork potstickers, which came with a traditional soy and vinegar based sauce and some red chili oil sauce to make it spicy. I could taste notes of ginger and green onion in the potsticker filling, along with some other spices I wasn’t familiar with but that made it tasty all the same. To drink, at the owner’s suggestion, we tried the sweetened tea; green tea for me and my sister, and black tea for my boyfriend (ironically enough, he says green tea tastes too green and won’t really touch the stuff) all of them with boba.

I was a little leery to try the sweet tea; having grown up in the southeast I had developed a strong dislike early on in my life for the syrupy sweet tea served in those parts. However, I was pleasantly surprised with the mellow sweetness of the drink handed to me. It was a very refreshing counter to the spicy sauce they gave us for the potstickers. At the end of the meal, my boyfriend (whose mother is from Laos and an accomplished cook herself) gave the potstickers his “stamp-of-approval” saying that was what well-made potstickers were supposed to taste like. I agreed, as they were very yummy.

Partway through the meal, Ada made a point to stop by our table to ask how the food tasted and if it was to our liking. After finishing our mouthfuls of food, we gave her a hearty and effusive reply in the affirmative. That day became the first of many visits.
