David Bouley hasn't been in the news much lately but he's a titan of New York dining, and has continued, through lo these many years to present some of the most elegant and precise food in the country at his flagship restaurant. He has a special affinity with seafood and vegetables, so it's a great place to take light eaters, but the meats are great too in their own way.
always good service – Bouley does have great food - it's one of those 'I'm on the expense account and need to wine and dine someone' type places. I don't think I'd ever go there if this wasn't the situation. The price is expensive enough to make your guest feel like they're really getting something and the food is quite good. I've always had good service when I've been there. Sometime the bill comes a little slow, but the food and drinks are usually right there when you need them.
Overpriced and incompetent service (even ther french are more friendly) – My husband selected this restaurant as a special surprise for my birthday. We paid $350 without tip. The Tasting Menu choice was better than the selection of foie gras as appetizer and pig as main course (a tiny square of food for $44). There were at least 6 waiters in black suits and several others, who served the food and water. The "men in black" were not able to answer any question competently and they were arrogant too. The only two persons, who's knowledge reflected what this place claims to be, were the maitre and the sommelier. For the change of the dessert of the Menu to cheese, we were charged additional $24! Definitely a place, were you pay for all the employees, but not for a reasonable/even little overpriced dinner.
High-powered Business Lunch – So last month I decided to try and impress my mom. She isn't too familiar with many of the nice New York restaurants so I decided to act like a well-educated big shot and take her to Bouley. Man, she was impressed, but was it worth the $220 dinner? I sure hope so! Food and drink was awesome. I had the Lamb with homemade sheep milk ricotta gnocchi and some other things. Everything was great as you'd expect from Bouley.
Service was excellent and they were knowledgeable. Be sure to take someone here for a high-powered business lunch or super awesome friday night date. Either way, you're sure to impress.
Save Your Money!!! – You can take your spouse/friend/relative to a much better place and also save tons of money! What can I say about Bouley?! It was simply disgusting! Food below par, waiting staff was wondering around helpless, after all this, the bill was extremely high ($175 pp) The place is old, needs new carpeting, and maybe good cleaning once in a while, it was dirty and worn down. What a disappointment and waste of money! Aside from few dishes and dessert, the rest of food was either bland or turned my stomach just by looking at it! Imagine: warm, raw egg whites with pieces of cooked egg white and almost raw ham drowned in it (nauseous yet?)
Great Experience – This place is great, so mellow. great ambiance, amazing wine list and great service. love the decor and the staff was really friendly. had the atlantic halibut and it was cooked perfectly.
would highly recommend this great spot for all kinds of events, dates, dinner with the rents. it's just an all around sweet spot....
Utterly disappointing – Visited Bouley this week for the first time. Service was poor; waiters were slow and unpleasant. The food was below average. It lacked both the flavor and the presentation. The best part of the food was their bread. Afterward I was left with severely upset stomach. One more thing, the place does not look clean and in fact there is a distinct fishy odor in the air. I will never go back.
Waiters screwed us up!! – While I will say that the food was extraordinary and gets 5 stars, at the end of the meal an extremely frustrating event occured. Therefore, my rating is unfortunately reduced to 2 stars. After a fulfilling and pleasant meal, the waiter brought a bill which included the items we ordered (2 tasting menus, 1 mineral water, 1 bottle wine) along with extra items (embedded into our other items on the receipt) that we had not ordered (2 beef soups, 2 wine pairings, 2 teas, etc). How could this happen?? Was this by accident?? Can't assume so. Who would coincidentally choose the exact same items we ordered? I believe this was deliberately done by the waiter(s) who served us. After I pointed out the error, they came back with the correct receipt and they didn't even apologize. We first considered that they brought us the bill for a different table, but the new bill showed the same correct number of the table we were seated in. Did being non-French affect their treatment of us? In a wonderful restaurant like Bouley, I am regretful to say that the actions of the waiters were extremely disappointing and degrading.
One of the best in New York – We came here for dinner with a reservation. As we opened the door, the smell of fresh fruit put us in a good mood. The mood was then somewhat spoiled by the long wait for our table. Once we sat down, however, everything was prefect. The service was impeccable and the food was delicious. We had the sea bass and the lamb. Both were prefect, if a bit on the small side. The deserts were delicious. Overall, I consider this one of the top restaurants in New York. It is also one of the few top restaurants to offer a la carte menus for dinner.
beautiful french dining – went to bouley for a special occasion - had a very enjoyable time. The dining room was lovely and the staff was very accommodating. The tasting menu was very good - and I appreciated them modifying it for my taste. The fish was incredible. Some things were a little bit over-buttered for my taste - the mashed potatoes, for example, were basically sticks of butter with some potato flavoring. The wine was good, although the wine list was very expensive and difficult to get a bottle *that was good* for under 100. No matter - the sommelier was great and gave good advice.
I really enjoyed Bouley but probably won't go back - I felt sick the next day from too much butter and heavy food - it was very luxurious but almost too much. Maybe ordering a la carte is a better idea.
My favorite restaurant – Wow! I was surprised to read some of the recent reviews when this has been my favorite (and birthday tradition) restaurant for 4 ys. in a row. I love Bouley! Once again, we did the 4 course tasting menu w/ the wine pairing (by far the best wine pairing from all the top notch restaurants). We even asked our waiter if we could add in a 5th course (foie gras) since it wasn't one of the options on the tasting menu. Though I will say that it wasn't full of flavor and slightly under-cooked (and trust me, I am a foie gras expert!). The service was excellent - we were definitely fussed over and they made sure we were pleased with everything. The amount of time between courses was perfect - some may say that 20 minutes before the main course is a bit of a wait - but I need it to digest the previous 3 courses! The deserts are delicous also. Sorry that some have had a bad experience here, but all 4 of mine have been great and I will be back there next year too!
