Jans Tropics is the best small bussiness in town – The first time i went into the store i was getting a feeder mouse. i was greeted with nice people offering any help i needed. i became a regular customer. They tought me many new things about animals and fish. they were very helpful and knew alot about what they were talking of. i was in a hard time and asked jan (the owner of the store for 45 years) if there was any part time work i could do for her while going to high school. she said if anthing came up she would give me a call. 3 weeks later i was working for her part time. i have been working there now for 9 months. i have learned alot about the tropical fish and salt water. i now know many more things of reptiles. i have also consuled in jan about my personal life and she has been there for me the whole time. she is a great person and an awsome bussiness owner. i am now thinking of opening my own bussiness in the future. If your in the town, go to jans tropics and elegant pooch u will enjoy the store very much

It's a place for kids to learn & begin. – I first arrived to Carson City at the age of seven and took home my first pet -but not before Jan first educated me in the responsabilities and reality of maintaining a pets life. Weather it had Feathers, Fins, or Fur it was a life and was not a toy. As I grew older I would as much as possable, after school, after chores, I would go to the shop to see the new arrivals. Jan sensed that I was sincere, excited, devoted to learning and caring for animals. Jan asked that I go home and tell my parents that she would like to speak to them.To speak with my parents? I was in fear I had become a nuicance at the shop. I didn't tell my parents right away and I even stayed away from shop until I had to buy more food for my hamsters or else. So I had my mom go to shop with my allowance and buy my hamster food. She returned and told me to go meet with Jan "NOW" With my heart beating fast and not knowing why, I walked slowly to the shop and met with Jan.She spoke firm and direct and informed me I would be working at the shop only after home chores and school work were done. My compensation would be so much money weekly with on hands training and learning of every product, animal, and the needs of customers and their animals. I learned more than any mother w/child in a stroller could ever possably learn or already should have known. Jan has raised, educated, contribted much to Carson & its Kids. I personally have started several businesses with what Jan has taught me.She has given to this community a great deal and still continues to. She even protects those who's parents bring them in strollers. Shame on you Minya. Our society is a file suit happy nation. Her trained staff was avoiding such an event. You were thoughtless of safety and liability to your children and to a community asset and a small business owner. Go to corporate Wal-mart for wide isles and your law suits. YOU WERE RUDE!
Only real aquarium in the entire state capitol of Nevada – I have been purchasing my discus fish from Jan for about two years now. They are a very expensive fish, yet Jan sells them for a reasonable price. I have only bought one sick fish before and she was more than willing to trade it in for a new one. I had two fish die, a loss of about $160 and she gladly replaced them without a fuss. Jan and her employees take excellent care of their animals, keep them in great environments, and assure the best customer service. For the only real aquarium store in Carson City, they are an exceptionally great one.
Great Place to take the dogs for grooming – I'd agree that Jan's Tropic's is NOT the place to take the kiddies on an excursion trip. Two strollers or one twin stroller would not be a good idea----they would not be maneuverable as the aisles are narrow.
However, it's a great place to take your dog to be groomed, as they do a good job with reasonable prices. And it looks like it has an extensive selection of supplies for tropical fish, as well as small birds and animals (including cat and dog supplies).
May I suggest that nearby Mill's Park might be a better place to take the kids out for a day?
The best aquarium supply in Carson City – Wow! I just left there. Although I'd have to agree it isn't a place for a baby stroller, it's an aquarium lover's dream. The employees are friendly and very knowledgeable. There is a very good variety of both fresh water and salt water fish, and you'll find each variety in it's very own tank. There is no fear of cross contamination there. I'm a beginner, but have not had much luck obtaining healthy fish at Petco or Petsmart and think it could have something to do with so many tanks sharing the same water and the level of cleanliness in the tanks. I'll be returning to Jan's as I graduate to larger tanks.
Rude Employees – Our twins were in strollers!! The store was overcrowded, dark, and had narrow isles. It was a maze. There was no way to get around without going down an isle with aquariums. An employee chased me down to tell me that children in strollers weren't allowed by the aquariums. As I was trying to get out of the place the rude employee followed me lecturing about how insurance would not allow children in strollers in that area (Would it be okay if they were running wild??). She was just Rude. The employee at the front counter when asked if there was a bathroom my son could use replied "BATHROOM??? We don't have one". My family was in this store for less than 2 minutes. So much for a nice day out with the kids.
