good pasta, but other things lacking – the cramped space is a major drawback, but the cheap hearty pasta and wonderful bruschetta are great. service is mediocre and they have no sugar for their coffee except raw brown cane sugar.. meh. haha, otherwise tho, really good pasta for the price! and good wine too!
go with a small party – worth the wait, worth spotty service, the food is simply incredible...go with a small group, go on a week night and you won't be disappointed
Never Again – Upon arrival we were told that there would be a half hour wait. When we were finally seated we had waited an hour and a half. We were brought a complimenatry bottle of wine which was nice. I was brought the wrong meal however since the wait was so long I did not contest. The shrimp in this dish made me deathly ill the next day. This food is not worth the wait nor the sickness!
Plate of meat – I went to Frank early, got a seat at the bar with a friend and it couldn't have been more enjoyable. The bartender was fun and accomodating and being able to order one huge meatball is brilliant. Crowd was a little stiff. Unless you're high maintenance and your heart's a tiny piece of coal, sharing a meatball with someone you love at Frank in the early evening is a great date.
Good food, bad atmosphere – I went with a party of 4. We called ahead to see what the wait would be around 8:30 and they said 30 minutes. We got there and it became an hour. The place is so tiny there's barely room to move. We sat at the crowded bar that only had one bartender while we waited. An hour and a half later we sat down. You are basically sitting on top of your neighbors. The menu is limited but the specials list is extensive. However, what they don't tell you is that the specials are more than twice the price of any entree. Our mozzareally appetizer was $18!!! And this place is on cheapeats. A little sneaky I thought. No entree is more than $15 on the menu, so we all ordered special and none were less than $20. The one thing was that the food was very good just not sure if it was worth the wait/small space/price.
Black Spaghetti is the best! – Every birthday, every event, everytime I want to bring out of towners to a real New York City charmer, I bring them to Frank. Always delicious and fun. Just remember to bring cash.
Lived up to its reputation – I've heard so many great things about this place and it did not disappoint. The space is small and rustic to say the least, but the food was outstanding. The beet salad was the perfect combination of sweet and peppery, and the homemade gnocchi were light and tasty.
My FAVORITE Italian place! – Frank is my favorite, old standby Italian joint. It's very inexpensive and highly dependable. I usually split the mussels with my tablepartner (perfectly plump and fresh) and the arugula salad (crisp salady perfection) and the Rigatoni Al Ragu, which is the main reason I come here. The ragu is a meatball and sausage dream, and the rigatoni is always al dente and perfectly filling when shared. The wine list is also wonderful - no complaints, but expect a little wait, worth it when you get the great Italian food.
spaghetti alla wow! – went to frank with 3 friends on a busy saturday night. waited a while but the burly door guy was so scary i didn't protest. plus, it was like 8:30 when we showed up. holy moly was it worth the wait!!! sat at the huge long table in the bar room, between 2 other parties, but it was cozy, i didn't mind. i don't understand why people hate sitting with other people?! anyway, oh my god, the reason why i created a citysearch account was to talk about the spaghetti dish i had... it was amazing!! rock shrimp, bread crumbs, that purple cabbage stuff, and almonds. WOW. i got a really big portion and i ate ALL of it. everyone loved what they got, actually, the papadelle, mushroom ravioli with truffel oil, the steak... so good! we took the waitress's reccomendations on everything and she got it all right. she was awesome, from going through a million specials with us, to answereing our questions about the crazy wine list and reccomending the pastas. people always talk about how long you have to wait and how bad the service is, and i found the wait to be long (30 min), but the service was great, no kidding! we all loved our waiter (asian girl) as much as we loved the food..... next time i go, i definitely want to try the berrata mozzerella (people next to us said it was amazing), and the big meatball! oh yeah, the one thing that stinks about this place is that it's cash only. there's like 9 atms on the block though.
amazing – been going here for 5 yrs. my favorite italian restaurant in the city. pasta is always very good, especially the black spaghetti. ambience is great; elbow to elbow, like being in europe. it's a long wait but the waitstaff has always been friendly. can't find this kind of joint for a good price in nyc.
