Bad food and even worse customer service – Went there for what we thought would be good cheap Indian Food. My friend ordered a dinner platter which had appetizers to dessert all in one price. I just ordered the shrimp with spicy Persian sauce and roti. Well when it came out it was less then stellar. One, we only got 1 piece of roti for $4 and it was stale and cold. Then when my entree arrived for $11 the shrimp were way over cooked and super cold.
When I complained the man apologized and asked if i wanted a new dish. I said no i was fine not eating since i ate appetizers. Well, then the bill came and he charged me for my meal. I was shocked and asked him to take it off. He said well if i dont pay for it then all the servers have to. Also he said the mango ice cream he gave me was to cover it!! How does that make sense? I didn't even ask for it. He also mentioned that he would give me a free meal if i paid for this one and came back again. I was appalled.
I wasn't upset that I had to return my food, as sometimes it happens. But everything after wards was completely embarrassing and backwards.
I thought I might go back there, but after i sent my dish back and after the horrible costumer service and arguing NO WAY.
We paid cash did, not leave money for my meal nor tip for my friends meal.
Why waste your time for cheap Indian food where you can get something better for the same price someplace else?
The musicians were really great and cute.
Just another Indian restaurant on the 6th – The food overall was good except the appetizer platter, which was so dry that we barely touched it. Service was good. Price was reasonable. Given the fact that there are tremendous Indian restaurants around, there is nothing special about this restaurant that would make me go again
Cheap, delicious indian food – I come to Raj Mahal freqently, and it's always great. The atmosphere is cramped, but friendly and exciting. They usually have someone up front playing awesome sitar music. Service is quick, and the food is amazing. The portions look small at first, but I leave full every time. One of the only cons is that they rush a complimentary dessert out to you before you have a chance to order the dessert of your choice, but I guess that saves money anyway, which is one of the best parts of this place: dinner for 2 can easily fit in the $20 range. The other con is that as delicious as the food is, the dishes all taste a little too similar, with only subtle differences. I'd still highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a fun, tasty dinner on a budget.
6th Street Champion – You truly need a scorecard to keep track of the cheap indian places on 6th street as fas as which ones are good and which ones blow. Sonali used to be great, then it got sold and sucked and now i think its defunct. Raj Mahal, at last eat, is top o the pops on idian row (for my money). they do the special ($11.95 for wine/dessert/entree/appetizers), but the food is actually top quality (not baluchis top quality, but still good). Ask the waiter to chill the red wine fo 10-15 minutes before serving because they really do not store wine well at this place. But the service is attentive and, ehy, its dirt cheap. But do bring the maalox particularly for the unititiated.
Decent Food for Price, Staff sucks – food is ok, servers are the worst i've ever seen (especially one in particular, you can figure which one out if you go there) don't even pay attention to whether you're done or not (once had to wait 20 minutes after eating to get their attention to get the bill, and its a pretty small restaurant). I ordered a 5.95 prix free lunch once, and 5 minutes later decided i wanted to add on a chicken dish which made the price 7 dollars. they didn't have to change anything about the menu except add a leg of chicken seperatley and the guy mumbled very rudely that I had already ordered and I should've decided earlier. go for the price, not the service
User review by itbehooves – Lured in by the live music which was good, scared out by the food which was bad. I was given something that I didn't order, although the waiter knew fully well what I ordered. The waiters were rude, and the appetizer dip had bits of bread in it from someone else's dinner. The food was sub-par even for e6th street, greasy samosa and watery sauce.
Good food and music – The food was pretty good and relatively inexpensive. The staff however, needs to be injected with a little dose of charisma, but that's asking too much. The live music is awesome.
we go for the tabla player – The food is good and cheap, typical of e6th st, but what makes this place stand out is the live music and the incredible tabla player. The place is always packed with musicians who come to hear him.
