The screens show eclectic fare that oscillates between highbrow art and exploitation flicks. – In Short
Renovated a few years ago, Cinema Village's downstairs lobby shares the same neon blue glow that marks the Angelika, but is modestly different and manages a much less ambitious concession stand. Also, happily, unlike the Angelika: you can't feel the subway running below you from any of the theaters.
It Takes a (Cinema) Village – Cinema Village chooses great films, and shows them in an arena of comfort and almost ridiculous proximity to Brendon Blake's apartment.
Rejuvenated old-school art house – This theater emerged from its recent renovation with a new lease on life. It was seriously grungy and run-down, and the programming was hit or miss. Now it's quite comfortable, and there's an extra screen in the basement (which is tiny). The programming has improved--featuring lots of low-profile indie and foreign fare--films turn over more frequently, and what was once a pretty deserted venue now often has long lines outside of it.
