How I Found My Perfect Wedding Dress – After a fun dinner at Café' Gitane in NoLita, my fiancé and I took a walk down Mott Street, looking at the boutiques. This is how I found BLUE, a wedding gown store that must be a best-kept secret in New York City. The dresses in the window are stunning! I knew that night that I had to get my wedding dress here. I called the next morning to schedule an appointment with Christina Kara, the designer owner, and creative genius. After a less than 5-minute conversation with me, she knew exactly what I wanted to look like and began to fashion the most gorgeous wedding gown I have ever seen, and it was for me!! How lucky for me.
I had looked at so many places and I would either find ridiculously expensive dresses that weren't my style or gowns more reasonably priced that were poorly made. Christina put all my fears to rest, as she combined the best of both worlds, a beautifully sewn, and beautifully made chic and sophisticated dress at a reasonable price. I never felt more beautiful on my wedding day, and I got so many compliments. The dress with its long train and tight fitting bodice was romantic, sexy and elegant. My husband loved it too!
Thanks, Christina and BLUE for making me feel so special on my wedding day!
Beautiful experience – Working with Christina was definitely a creative experience. When I initially went in to talk about making my dress, I had a pretty definite idea in mind. She assured me that it would not be a problem at all...and this was 6 months before my wedding. As our visits progressed, we made some big and some small changes and the final product was not exactly what I thought it would be 6 months ago, but it WAS the most beautiful wedding dress I'd ever seen. When I was nervous about the dress, she allowed me to make extra appt's and we worked together to make it perfect. Weddings are stressful, and all she does is deal with brides, so she may seem abrasive to some, but I thought she was so talented and fun to work with. I recommend her highly, but with her or any designer you have to be sure to keep the lines of communication open the whole time. Loved her!
Only For The Truly Stylish and Unique Individual – I have been going to Blue now for over 18 years and I still owe and wear everything I ever purchased there. I always feel beautiful and unique in her creations and she has a way to make you feel like the dress was made just for you. I hope one day to get married if only to wear one of her wonderful wedding dresses.
Most perfect wedding dress! – Christina saved me when I came to her a week before my wedding after my original dress was a disaster. She created for me, within a week, the most beautiful dress I could ever have imagined. My dress is unique and completely me, she instantly saw what would suit me and seemed to able to know my character and taste so completely that she created the dress of my dreams. She is magical!
A wonderful and unique fashion experience – Cristina Kara, the designer at Blue, is a true artist. She takes a piece of fabric, a few pins, and all of a sudden there?s a gorgeous and original mock-up of a wedding dress that looks perfect on you. Once you give her the go-ahead?which I did almost the moment I saw her first suggested design-- she starts working to create the custom gown over the next few months. The results were amazing. I LOVED my dress and, based on the excessive compliments I got, so did everyone else.
I found out about Blue when my good friend got her wedding dress custom-made there 2 years ago. I loved going to her fittings with her?.loved the casual, artsy atmosphere, the personal feel, and most of all, the dress my friend ended up wearing to her wedding.
Blue may not be for everyone. It?s not like going to a fancy uptown bridal boutique where you have to be buzzed in, there are refreshments, and everything is in perfect order. There?s a little bit of chaos and lots of character going on at Blue--and so much artistic talent. If you are open to a real fashion experience and want a dress like no other, I can not recommend Cristina Kara?s work highly enough.
BLUE - For the Bold and the Beautiful – Christina Kara (the designer) is as authentic as the beautiful creations she makes for her boutique 'BLUE'. She has an excellent eye and knows what is the most flattering for every body type, i.e. she wont B.S you into buying something that looks weird on you, and because she's an expert dressmaker with her finger on the pulse of the latest fashions. Her stuff is not about 'trends' or 'whimsy.' The dresses at Blue are bold and feminine, there's a touch of Audrey Hepburn and Cindy Lauper in her style (both women could hypothetically walk in her store and find something they would love and cherish forever) Christina is involved from the start - through every fitting (for those who require fittings) to the finish of every garment. (Think "Greek Vivienne Westwood," classic and funky, but for a fraction of the price..!) She's frank and talented, and something of a New York legend, especially to those who've been around the East Village for awhile, because she offers something that is hard to find these days, which is really affordable high quality dressmaking with a touch of eccentric glamour. Her Atelier always has a fantastic creative buzz, as she is renowned for literally 'sculpting' fine fabrics into garments on her clients bodies, to amazing and form flattering effect. The people who have written negative comments on this site probably did not have a rapport with her or understand the way that she works. If you're a clueless spoilt brat or the clueless daddy of a clueless spoilt brat, you should probably go to a pretentious shop in the UES or some equally unimaginative marketplace for re-hashed pricey ready to wear ho-hum clothing. (By the way - she has WONDERFUL Pret-a-Porter wear) Go to Blue if you want to wear timeless elegance coupled with a modern twist, and you'll also come away with a truly unique and sophisticated garment, along with the satisfying experience of feeling like you've had the more glamorous aspects of your personality stitched around you.
A bustling design studio for bespoke bridal gear at off-the-rack prices. – In Short
This East Village dress shop acts as both showroom and workshop, with just a thin muslin curtain dividing the two spaces. While customers are encouraged to make appointments, designers will not turn you away even as they pin material to a mannequin for another order. In the showroom, half-made dresses and assorted bodices and skirts are displayed, with an emphasis on ruching, tulle and fabulous distressed lace for a hip, modern look with a classic touch. Prices begin at $700 for cocktail dresses and $1,500 for custom bridal gowns.
Memorable Bridal Experience – I went to Blue for my wedding dress and my rehearsal dinner dress. It's true that the appearance of the shop is shockingly spare, and that Christina's choice of clothing for herself is more pauper than princess, but she turned what looked like a scrap of cloth in to an amazing dress, and did so according to my individual requests. My wedding dress was made with meticulous care--each piece of lace sewn on just so. My mother-in-law and sister-in-law also got their dresses there. In fact, my sister-in-law has recommended her so much that Christina threw in my dream rehearsal dress for free (a $400 dress). You have to tell her your wedding is a week or two before its actual date, and you have to be firm with your desires regarding the dress, but going to Blue for fittings was a part of my wedding process that I looked forward every time and something will never forget. She and her colleagues were never disrespectful to me or my family.
Bizarre – I went to this shop this weekend, understanding that the owner designs and sews all her own dresses. However, she did not have a single finished dress to try on. She basically pinned fabric on me and then walked away to chat in Italian with her coworker. It was impossible to know what the finished product would look like. Plus, she was barely dressed herself - her dress was half unzipped in the back and had threads dangling everywhere. If this is how she presents herself, I can only imagine what she puts on other people! There was also no real changing room - not good for modest people. Only go here if you have a design and just need someone to sew it.
Traumatized – Wanna pay $350 for terrible customer service/be treated like dirt? Blue is for you!Currently in a bridal party for a wedding in Oct. Bridesmaids were fitted for dresses back in Feb. Went to pick them up this weekend only to find that not only were they unfinished (pins, threads and unsewn seams) but they were in the wrong material! Confronted by the Bride, the owner shouted at her in the middle of the store (making her cry) in front of all 12 bridesmaids/3 other customers she had quadruple booked! She told us to take our deposits and go elsewhere 3 weeks before the wedding! Don't be fooled by the designs in her untidy shop. Despite her talent she can't deliver the product agreed upon in a 7 month time frame and will disrespect you to boot! Shame on Blue. You've passed up 12 potential brides/future business! Beware of Blue!
