An East Village Gem! – My husband discovered this venue a few years ago and we have grown to love it so much- we even became members this year. The performance space offers a wonderful selection of avant garde plays. PS 122 is reasonably priced (an inexpensive alternative to Broadway) and each of their plays are insightful. I always leave a show with lots to talk and think about. PS 122 also has an art gallery with changing exhibitions.
Though it's physically downtrodden, P.S. 122 is scrappy in spirit. – Drama School
There's nothing glamorous about this former elementary school, whose narrow hallways induce feelings of either intense nostalgia or horror. Today, theater, dance, music, film and video all happen in P.S. 122's two performance spaces. The large second-floor space is used for weekend runs. Shows with longer runs are performed in a more intimate setting on the first floor. The incomparable theater collective Mabou Mines makes P.S. 122 its home, and lots of the other theater here is experimental, sometimes delightfully so. It's a haven for both aspiring and ordained performers.
The East Village's "Globe" – A venue to see dance, performance art, plays, comedy, and multi-media shows. Most shows are under $20. You can get in free if you usher. Cutting-edge and established artists appear. "Alumni" (e.g., Tim Miller, Richard Maxwell) appear regularly.
