The best Greek salad outside of the islands – The best Greek salad outside Greece. The octopus was delightful. Service good. Atmosphere ok although a bit bland. Not fashionable but a good solid local haunt. Expensive. Orange cake was delicious. Lamb chops to 'lamby' for me. Fish was good but please let me know if it is wild or farmed. WIne was expensive. Bread was great and olives above average. Gets an A for cleanliness from NYC public health, which is always a good sign. So good but not spectacular.
Pricey Greek Food – Beautiful restaurant in a great location...but, the menu is pricey considering the portion size. A "fancy" greek restaurant with a bit of an older feel to it.
Avoid for Restaurant Week – Don't go for restaurant week- service was awful and rude. Food was good but the price difference between regular menu and restaurant menu was not worth the rude treatment. They rush you out, treat you shabbly- told us we would have to move because our fourth person never showed up even though we had ordered and there were empty tables and tried to take away our half eaten food when it was obvious we were still eating...
Probably one of the worst experiences service-wise in the city. Go somewhere else for restaurant week.
Hidden Gem! – I would never have found this place...but I search on Citysearch by location...tried it and loved it....every bit was awesome...the service was a little lack...but we forgave it...make sure to sit in the skylight area!
Food & Service Both Great – I agree with some of the other reviews. I've lived in NYC for 8 years, the food was among the best I've had off the main menu, the fish was exceptionally prepared and the service was among the best I've had at any restaurant. Prices were a little high for a neighborhood place (especially the wine) with average decor...but clearly a good dining experience and one I will definitely return to in the future.

The whole fish with the lemon, oregano and olive oil taste no one in new york can come close. We are not going to say anything fro this octopus, out of this world!!!

they ruined my valentine's day – i was looking forward to this restaurant for weeks! we came in a little early but was promptly seated. our appetizers were delicious but our entrees never showed up. the waitress was too busy to notice. i flagged her down after 25 minutes but noticed that she had never put our entree order into the kitchen. after waiting over 45 minutes just for entree, we decided to walk out. there is no way we're going to spend over 150 dollars on such incompetent service. the manager never once came over to apologize.
Would skip for restaurant week – This restaurant is really beautiful and I get the feeling it would be a great place to come for an expensive night out. However, I recently had the restaurant week menu and was definitely not impressed. The appetizer and main course were mediocre, even if the dessert was delicious. So basically, order off the normal menu.
Beautiful Food – First time there and we're fans. The food was fantastic and our waiter was world class. I highly recommend Periyali for the food and ambiance. Only downside, maitre'd with a diva complex.

A cool Mediterranean retreat from the city's chaos, with fabric-swathed ceilings and pristine white furnishings. Even on a hectic night, service is calm and competent, and the professional couples at most of the tables seem to be speaking in peaceful whispers.
The kitchen offers scintillating versions of hearty, refreshing Greek favorites. Souvlaki is charcoal-grilled and upscaled with filet mignon to produce an impressively tender, succulent result. Wine-marinated octopus legs are also charcoal-grilled, resulting in astounding flavor and not a hint of rubberiness. Classics like garlicky skordalia, fava beans, sauteed chicken livers over lentils, and spanakopita are all best-of-breed versions, the latter prepared as a platter of bite-sized pies. A sizeable portion of moussaka, consisting of layers of juicy ground lamb and eggplant, tied together by a superlative bechamel. For dessert, the array of delicate pastries and the deeply creamy rice pudding are excellent without exception.
