Stay Away – Awfully rude and overpriced place. Went in this past weekend to find a coat. Had a man hovering over us as though we were going to steal it. Found a coat, but our measurement was off by two inches. Since we live in HK, bringing our dog down in the snow wasn't an option, so he couldn't have him try it on there. This store has an asinine return policy. We were only able to get store credit, not a refund, after we brought the coat back the next day, unused. Of course they had nothing else in our dog's size, and refused the idea of ordering one in the correct size. Talk about awful customer service.
our neighborhood gem – There are so many stores to choose from in the neighborhood, my favorite is the barking zoo. Not only is the food selection excellent (they have been always able to meet my dogs ever changing dietery needs) but the staff has always been knowledgeable, personable and makes it a pleasure to shop in this little neighborhood gem. The staff has always made me feel at home and more importantly appreciated. Now I ask, where do you get that these days? I've recommended them many times and would not hesistate to do so again.
Really good selection of food and accessories – The guys who own the place have have a lot of expertise in nutrition; they manage to carry a big range of premium and specialty foods and are happy to help you with your pet's diet. Yes, they WILL discuss the state of your dog's digestion with you week after week while you search for the right food.
They also have a great eye for selecting toys and accessories and more practical stuff like crates and gates and travel bags. The Barking Zoo is a real neighborhood business (a little rare in this town lately!) and they know all the local dog walkers and pet sitters and vets, so if you're looking for one, just drop by and ask them. The staff is friendly and helpful.
Great Store....Great Staff.......Best Dog Spot in the hood – So as a long time patron of the store I figured I would shed some light on the Best dog spot in Chelsea. The Barking Zoo has one of the best selections of Holistic foods in NYC. They have a very knowledgeable staff that are quick with a helping hand and a smile. Their selection of toys and beds is second to none. I have shopped there for a long time and plan on continuing. The playful staff is a far cry from rude I always leave the store with a smile on my face.
If you are new to the neighborhood are looking for a change in your dog food provider I would highly reccomend the Boys of the Barking zoo. Great food, Great selection, and customer service to boot.
Tone down the attitude? – I enjoy the fact that this pet store offers cute homemade treats, quality pet food and free advice, but what I don't appreciate is the always prompt snickering ,smart alec vibe I get from the shop tenders. I return often, but always have to brace myself for the uncomfortable feeling I get that costumers are waited for to provide a forum for comic relief and sarcastic banter amongst the sales people. I suppose if you keep in mind that your friendly conversation will only be appreciated to make you feel a fool in the company of "The Barking Zoo" whence thrown back at you sarcastically/obnoxiously, or used for the co-workers to score wisecrack points amongst themselves, it's not a bad place to spend your money.
Grooviest Pet store in all NYC!!! – Being new to the Chelsea neighorbood (former UESider) I asked at the local dog run where one shopped for their dogs. The Barking Zoo was recommended to me by everyone I spoke with. I made a b-line there and found my new best friends!!! The selection of Natural and Holistic and Raw foods was amazing. Their staff were so friendly and helpful. They referred me to local Vets, dog walkers and groomer, set up an account for me putting me on a delivery schedule every other week. I really appreciated that service but plan on making frequent trips to The Barking Zoo myself to scout out the best toys, bags and beds for my 2 cats and 2 dogs. New product comes in weekly so if you snooze you lose! They also design and make their own line of dog sweaters! Highly recommend to all. Very busy on weekends, Many tourists flock there. Groovy music
The fanciest pet food store in town. – The Scene
Peggy Lee on the sound system, rottweilers running wild with leashes dragging behind, owners chatting with the staff about the virtues of flaxseed for puppy health--what could be more charming? This is a neighborhood pet supply store that's truly neighborly, a cozy nook full of high-quality products and down-home charm.
In addition to a full selection of fancy chew toys, designer poop-pickup bags and Burberry dog beds, the Barking Zoo is the destination for obscure pet foods. Traditional premium brands like IAMS and Science Diet are joined by an astonishing larder of all-natural varieties, such as Wellness' oven-baked fish and sweet potato-flavored dog chow. Picky kitties and pups will find no end to haute cuisine to tantalize their palates here.
