Mall-competitive but downtown-honest, it keeps up with both chart-topping and alternative music..
The Space
The downtown Tower has three branches: The video and book store is a block east (338 Lafayette Street) of the main store and the clearance outlet is housed in the back of the main store, which features a multi-level, mini-mall design in a lower-Manhattan loft space.
What They're Playing
Anything new and loud, from dance to hip-hop to rock. The floor staff controls the sound system and they play what they're into.
What They've Got
Everything they can stock in this ever-crowded space. Not just the usual major-label and new-release offerings, but also as much indie and alternative music as they can sell. The downstairs world music section is impressive, as is the stock of catalog stuff from the realms of jazz, country, pop, classical, etc. The clearance outlet offers used CDs, cutouts and back-catalog "nice price" discs.
Not the Best Tower. This location's got more than you'd expect, though not necessarily what you'd want. With its several floors, packed with people and merch, and its continually advertise events, it's still got a more extensive jazz collection than you'd guess upstairs. But for rock, etc., you're most likely to find it if it's mainstream and recent, or if it's old enough that it's in the perpetual cds-on-sale bins.
