Nice service for my bike – My bike needed a repair to the axle and I carried it upstairs and the tech was really helpful in letting me buy the right parts, he even installed a difficult piece at no charge.

The place for camping and outdoor gear – Eastern Mountain Sports is where people who are serious about camping and outdoor sports go. The focus here is on function, not fashion. They’ve got all the latest technologies that really help when it comes to outdoorsy stuff, such as Tech-wick fabrics, that keep you dry while rafting or sweating up a storm, GPS accessories that help prevent you from getting lost, etc. They even have winter tents, if you are so hardcore into camping that you are inclined to sleeping outdoors when it’s freezing.

They’ve got a great selection of hiking boots, climbing/kayaking/camping/backpacking gear, swim/snow/ general sporting wear (fleece, fleece, fleece!), tents, and car racks in 100’s of brands, from North Face and Patagonia, to all the niche brands only adrenaline/adventure junkies would know about. Their Accessories are the coolest- emergency kits and survival gear, water filtration systems, etc.

They have factory outlets and a promotions section on the website where you can find dozens of deals on shipping, cash back rewards, or specific products.

Eastern Mountain Sports makes a perfect gift certificate for those hard-to-shop-for boys or men in your life.

Calling all Tree Huggers – Having gone to College in Vermont I use to visit EMS on the regular. I always needed ski gear, hiking gear and just the proper attire so that I would fit in with my tree hugging friends. Well with that being said, a lot has changed in my life since my Vermont days but one thing still remains the same, Eastern Mountain Sports Rocks!

I must say I don’t visit this shop as often as I used to but I can guarantee that I hit it at least twice a year to purchase two of my favorite items. In the fall I always go to pick up a pair of Keen hiking boots and in the spring I stop by to get a new pair of Tevas (just got mine last week). Both of these shoes are part of my outdoor activity wardrobe.

This is my favorite location in the city since they always have the best shoe selection and that is what I mainly shop here for. On the occasion I will pick up some thermal wear or a fleece or two but for the most part I stick to the footwear.

Great store for all your outdoor activity needs.

Take the hike! – I'm planning a camping trip this summer and was looking for a good place to buy gear. Whenever I asked friends where I should go they ALL mentioned Eastern Mountain Sports. That in and of itself is pretty cool, but I was even more impressed once I got there. The place is huge, clean, and has a great selection. I don't have a lot of money to spend so I spent about an hour just browsing around and pricing things out that were in my budget, and I found a lot of quality gear that fit within my price-range. Great selection of sleeping bags, and backpacks--two items you can really break the bank on if you're not careful.

The sales staff wasn't stellar. They were nice once I approached them to talk, and they were knowledgeable enough about the products that they stock in the store, but I was kind of hoping someone would approach me and ask if I needed help--which I did at one point. Once I did get to talking with someone they were very nice and professional without acting like they were my best friend. Any negatives I might have felt at the start of my shopping adventure were washed away by the time I left, but the selection is so huge that it's a bit overwhelming if you don't know where to start.

Sporting Goods – Talk about Great gadgets for outdoor activities. I love walking around this store. Always something new. Backpacks, waterbottles, socks, camping food, etc... I like their great quality of clothing for biking.

The drawback is that this location does not carry anything for children, nor do they carry kayaking gear. EMS Soho primarily carries products for cycling, hiking/camping, and climbing. This location carries a large selection of footwear on their second floor. Everything from hiking boots and shoes to backpacking shoes and trail walking shoes. I was able to find the five finger shoes, they had them in some cute colors here. On the first floor they have climbing gear and a small area of books.

The staff in this location may be somewhat knowledgeable but they are not friendly and not too helpful. They act like they are being bothered by customers presence. I guess EMS needs an employee apprectiation program intervention.

There is only one EMS currently in the city. But I here there is a new store opening up in the upper west side this fall. Hopefully it will be a bigger store with a wider range of outdoor activity products and friendlier, helpful staff.

so much stuff so little time.... – Eastern Mountain Sports is loaded with really fun stuff, some of which I needed, like rock climbing gear, and some that I didn’t, but wished I did like tents, backpacks, luggage, flashlights, and super cool accessories. I spent lots of time checking out their gear, in fact I lost track of time and ended up being late to meet a friend from lunch, which was crazy since I hadn’t planned on visiting the store in the first place. I passed by and decided to spend 5 minutes looking at the rock climbing shoes, harnesses and helmets.

The only down side is that their stuff is a little pricey, so I will have to go back when I have more cash. Also I have to say the staff was super friendly and willing to go the extra mile, which was great to experience. They also knew almost everything about the gear they were selling which is always a big plus.

Serious gear for extreme outdoor adventurers. – In Short
The salespeople at Eastern Mountain Sports pride themselves on their know-how. They spend weekends using the gear they sell during the week and can tell you which item is best for which place under what conditions--and not just by reading the side of the box. So while the store is first-timer friendly, many experienced shoppers are picking staffers' brains for good hiking trails while they pick out their new pack.
