My Favorite Bar! – Honestly, this place is what it is. It has an amazing laid back attitude and great music. I come almost every Friday. I am over the too crowded and places that think they are too cool in New York. Do not come here expecting a lounge, club, or upscale bar. This is a dive bar, but that's what makes it great.
Remember, it's not the CLUB – The last of a dying breed of old school bars/dives on Bleecker St.
With all the college/football/beer pong/ karaoke/ food pubs opening up in the neighborhood, people often get The Back fence confused with trendy places like those.
TBF has been in business since 1945 and has been a village staple ever since.
However, many people dont get that this is NOT the club. It's not a dance joint. It's not your own bar from your neighborhood in anywhere, USA where they dont have rules.
It's a small joint. You either have ppl at the bar, or tables. The reason it's roped off at the bar is to allow ppl to get to the bathroom, or to allow the servers to bring drinks to the table, without getting bumped into by the large crowd.
It's also the reason for no dancing, (mainly on very busy nights like Fr & Sat) because drunks dancing and getting in the way of servers is no good. Or the fact that ppl have taken a dive into the drumset of the bands from time to time. Like I said, it's not a club, there's no dancefloor.
If staff asks you to sit down so a waiter can get by to bring drinks to a table, then sorry if you cant understand that.
The plus it that there's great music every single night. If you're not a douche to the waiters, then they're cool with you. There's drink specials every night and free peanuts.
I've never had a bad time here. I think ppl who write negative reviews about the dancing probably have no understanding of being considerate to servers and staff.
This bar was dirty, from the bar to the bathrooms. Dirty rags to wipe down the bar, gnats and flies...ugh
Relax, chill, have a drink. – I have been to this little "historical place" many times, and I'm still going. Good drinks, live music, friendly staff, what more can you ask? Well, maybe a cabaret license since you will be throw out the door for dancing, haha.
BACK FENCE – im a male 50 and i love this bar,my wife can't force me to dance here so i can just lay back ,relax and listen to the great music. For the chics that dont know how to chill, stick it in your ear. This is the place to unwind and have a great time.Musicians take requests and they are all very good.Good prices, good music, good people and an easy chill what else could you ask for. See vinnie and the others for a great time. Thanks for the great times Back Fence.CHEERS
A rural-style bar for cheap live tunes. – The Scene
With checkered tablecloths, sawdust-covered floors, a battered brown fence in back and a stage so small Anna Nicole couldn't fit on it, this Greenwich Village institution is the height of rustic urban style--at least in its decor. Open for more than 60 years, Back Fence still attracts some old-time regulars, who share the dive with tons of tourists who crowd uncomfortably around the Lilliputian tables, soaking up the time-warp surroundings.
Every single night, two or three no-name entertainers (many of whom have played here for decades) perform all styles of music: rock and roll, R&B, pop, country and folk. Due to the coziness of the stage, solo singer-songwriters are in abundance. Cheap beer on tap and unlimited free peanuts (which you shell yourself) complete the laid-back ambience.
What year are we in? – Why does a bar imply live music and a good time when you must be stapled to a seat or stuck behind the velvet rope? I have no complaints about the bands...incredible. But, how can you truly enjoy yourself? If the music moves you, they throw you out the door. Come on...give up the 5 bucks a month and get your cabaret license...then I will come back.
If you really want to let it all hang out...don't take it to the Back Fence...trust me.
"Lighten-Up!" – You need expensive decor to convince yourself you're in a good bar... don't bother. You need a multi-media, audio/visual assault on your senses to prevent boredom...not here. You want to kick back and slough off some of that 9-5 crap? Are you tired of keeping up appearances, that you forget to have a good time? Welcome Home!! The musical acts here range from mediocre to awesome. Taste, of course, is a factor, but I highly recommend Greg Aulden. His voice is amazing and he's funny as hell! (He does a great "Rocky Mtn. High!) Check your attitude at the door and this place is an oasis!
Ack! Bleeker st – lots of tourists here. ok place but not so great for quality bands.
ADAM WEISS is awesome live... – Wow, i was passing by and i saw live music and when i got in, a guy on the guitar Adam Weiss was rocking away. I recommend seeing him there. Hes humourus and a really good musician.
The waitress there is very cool too, but i think the bartender is having a midlife crisis cuz hes a total dick ;-) i get all my drinks through the waitress from now on...
