Best bike shop I've ever been to. I first brought in my old bike for a tune-up; they did a great job and the price was right in line with what other places in the area charges. A few months later I finally decided to buy a new bike. They did not try to sell me on one of the most expensive bikes. They asked what I'm using the bike for (ie, exercise, racing, long-distance rides, etc), then showed me a few that would work for me, none of which were all on the moderate-priced side. They let me take the bike for a ride around Prospect Park. I loved it and purchased it that day. They told me to come back in about a month to have the gears adjusted, which is what should be done for all new bikes (the first place that ever told me this). I went back and they did the adjustment and the bike rides beautifully.
The staff is very friendly, knowledgeable, and no pressure. I would highly recommend them and plan on using them for all my bike needs.
Just Bloody Awful! – I bought a Linus Gaston 1 last week.
Alarm bells should have rung when they refused to sign and stamp my Linus warranty card.
After cycling home i noticed they had scratched up the paint fitting a rear rack that I had purchased at the same time and then just touched up the scratches with the supplied spare paint.
I rode 40 miles over the weekend and as expected things came a little loose. Alarmingly though the headset was very loose and after a call to Linus (who were ever so pleasant) they told me to drag it back to Bicycle Habitat and have a black plastic washer removed and that should remedy the problem.
I went back today, and they refused to look at the bike at first, and after threatening them nicely, they gingerly took a look and then said nothing was wrong and that I should "Get the f*** out of here".
I have since fixed the problem myself by removing said black plastic washer. I have also told Linus about the a******* that run Bicycle Habitat.
So should you decide to part with over $800 to the pricks that work at Bicycle Habitat, don't expect any secondary care in regards to your bike.
In a nut shell they are thieving bastards and you should try either Ride Brooklyn or Adeline Adeline as I now do.
Bicycle Habitat saved me weeks of frustration and lots of mo – I was desperate to have someone repair 2 broken spokes on my 5 year old Strida bicycle. I skipped over Bicycle Habitat because of the numerous bad reviews they received on YELP. But after being turned away from three different bicycle shops that sell Strida bikes, I was left with no choice other than to bring my bike into Bicycle Habitat, the only Strida bike dealer that didn't cut me off with the condition that they don't service bkes that they didn't sell.
I was surprised to find an extremely pleasant staff who not only was welcoming but repaired the spokes while I watched and waited. While waiting I even saw them loan a bicycle pump to a biker who stopped in because his tire was low. Needless to say I walked out with not only my wheel back in top condition but also a few fun accessories that caught my interest while waiting. They even installed a mirror and emergency rear flashing light at no extra charge. I really can't say enough about what a relief it was to find a shop like this as my only alternative was taking off the wheel and shipping it back to the UK for repair as was suggested by not just one but two of the other bike shops that are also Strida dealers.
I hope this review is helpful. I wish I had been able to read a few favorable reviews of Bicycle Habitat when I was looking for a local repair shop to service my 5 year old bike.
Arrogant Staff – This is the easiest bike place for me to get to from where i live. Staff think they are gods gift to cycling. Beware! You can be standing forever waiting to be served while staff are chatting with each other or chatting with their mates. Sadly this is typical of bike stores in manhattan. Headover to the Bicycle repairman in Astoria, Queens for freindly, customer oriented service.
terrible – a few years back we got fixed gear a bike here, and the mechanic installed the cog upside-down stripping the hub and rendering it useless, and then not admitting to his fault. two days ago my friend got a fixed gear here and the cog was loose and they said that it wasn't loose and that is slipped for some other stupid reason. he also and them install a front break... the next day the pads fell off!
like i said.... these guys are morons
Worse than rude -- downright insulting – The people here are obnoxious. I was insulted by a man at the front of the store when accompanied by my 4-year-old daughter. I guess he thought we were stupid. There are nice people at bicycle shops nearby; it is not worth coming here.
Unfriendly and snide – These guys should be selling guns, not bikes. How sad to see such a joyless group involved with such a joyful machine. The guy in the front who "fixes" bikes needs to be fixed himself.
Customer Service A+. Wait, Not So Fast. – Bought a Mountain Bike a few weeks ago from Matt. He was very patient with all the questions I asked before dropping a bunch of cash on a really nice bike. Very helpful with everything. I went back today for the tune-up he recommended I do after a month. I spoke to the blonde girl, super nice, who put me next in line for the service guy, who answered more questions for me, with no attitude. I needed a tire that wasn't in stock but will be replaced in less than a week at no charge. Overall great service. Yes, the store is a little cramped, but is thats not really a big deal to me in a bike store.
**UPDATE, at the opposite end of the spectrum. I broke my derailleur hanger almost 2 weeks ago, and I called first to see if they had the part. I was told, after being put on hold, that they had the part in back. Great, see you soon.
I expected to get in and get out, as I can install it myself, so I just needed the part. I then dealt with one of the most awkward people I've ever encountered. The kid told me they did not have the part, he'd have to order it. "Are you sure, they told me it was here?" Strange kid goes back to check again, returning empty handed. OK fine, things happen. "Oh wait, the computer's broken. I have to go in the back again." Ugh, efficiency people.
So he will order the part, and it will be here in "4 days or 2 weeks". Can I leave a deposit? Not if its going to take 2 weeks, I'll order it myself. Another sales guy interjects, "It will be here in 4 days." I then leave $10 and leave shaking my head.
Well its been 12 days and no phone call yet. I call and the guy says he can't find it, if it's here. The guy that does orders doesn't work on Sundays. Honestly, I don't care who works when, I want to ride my bike. I've been duped.
I call Sid's in Chelsea. "We don't have the part in stock, but we'll take it off a new bike for you." WOW! Someone wants my business! Habitat can keep my $10. Sid's has a new customer.
UNLESS YOU ARE LANCE THEY LOOK AT YOU LIKE YOU NEED TRAINING WHEELS – bad customer service. worse managment. know it all employees. nothing worse than a know it all . especially in the cycling world. go to sids, or velo on 2nd ave. the blonde chic that works there has a similar atitude to a traffic officer writing parking tickets. you know the type.
BEST Bike Shop For Repairs In NYC!!! – Whether it's SuperCool dred-sportin' Hal or another of the shops repair techs, I've NEVER been dissapointed by the speed and accuracy of the repair crew at Bicycle Habitat.
I tried others, (had a pretty bad experience with a certain shop on the corner of Sixth Avenue and West 15th Street) and then fell in love with the "it's no problem" mentality at Bicycle Habitat's shop in beautiful Soho.
Long live Hairy Hal and his crazy cool skills ( and the other cool folks at this shop)!
