This unusual performance space is home to the Jean Cocteau Rep. – Situated in a distinguished cast-iron building designed in 1874, the 140-seat theater was carved out of an old bank. The exterior, with its heavy Victorian trim, is an eye-catching feature of the Bowery, New York's old skid row. The long-standing resident company Cocteau Rep was formed in the tradition of the great European ensembles and enjoys a reputation for innovative productions of theatrical masterworks spanning the Greeks to Jean Genet.
Excellent productions but no leg room – I love their productions and the quality of the performances is excellent. The theatre is small and cozy. However, the seats are way TOO NARROW and there is NO leg room whatsoever, unless you sit in the front row or the fire escape row.
Another reason to go to Village – Well, I don't know who should be credited for it - Bouwerie Lane, Oscar Wild or both of them, but I had such a great time there on "Importance of being Earnest". ...and even if you don't like the show, you will find something else in the neighborhood to save the evening.
