Editorial Review for Nobu – by Citysearch Staff
The Scene
Thanks in part to the fact that Nobu belongs to the Drew Nieporent-Robert De Niro restaurant syndicate, this vaunted sushi house has become a little Hollywood East. There's a palpable anticipation of celebrity sightings from a crowd that's equal parts nouveau riche and seasoned, in-the-know foodie. The sleek, Japanese-accented interior--by star restaurant designer David Rockwell--is an impressively calming space.
The Food
The densely flavored sweet black cod marinated in miso is Nobu's signature item. Another jaw-droppingly good choice is the squid "pasta"--tender pieces of squid and crunchy asparagus, coated with a rich butter and garlic sauce. As one would expect, the sushi and sashimi are decadent. Omakase dinners here are legendary, and easily eclipse Alain Ducasse in price.

This is probably the best Japanese fusion restaurant I've ever been to. Everything we had wasn't authentic Japanese, but all of them maintained a flavour from Japan - in either the ingredients or the seasoning , and I think the "fusion" turns out to be superb.

After dinner tonight, I realize why Nobu's been going strong for nearly 15 years: the signature dishes are unforgettable!! In particular, the new style sashimi, the sashimi salad, the jallepeno yellow tail, and the rock shrimp; I remember they made my eyes roll back in my head when I first tried them nearly a decade ago. Tonight marks my fourth visit since then, and every time, the food - the cold dishes in particular - seem more amazing than I remembered! There are some minor drawback that should be mentioned. For example, those who seat you tend to be aloof and a little snooty, as if to perpetuate the myth that Nobu remains 'the' exclusive celebrity hot-spot (based on tonight, you're more likely to see tables of financial guys than Howard Stern or Mark Wahlberg). It's also very difficult to get a reservation, which is baffling since there were at least 4 large tables unoccupied for a couple hours! Despite these problems, however, the actual wait staff are very attentive, helpful, and fast. And the fact remains that the dishes, the main attraction, should not to be missed!
