ANOTHER ONE GONE DOWNHILL – IT SMELLS FUNNY INSIDE - LIKE THE WALLS ARE WATER-LOGGED. THE LAST TIME I ATE THERE, I KEPT HEARING SOME SORT OF CHIRPING IN THE WALL - PROBABLY RATS.

THE FOOD USED TO BE BETTER...PRICES HAVE GONE UP.

SERVICE IS MEDIOCRE

THE PLACE IS FILTHY , THE FOOD THE WORST, COLD AND IT LOOKED LIKE ITS BEEN LAYING OUT FOR AWHILE, ITS SERVED FAMILY STYLE SO YOU CANT EVEN ORDER WHAT YOU WANT THEY JUST BRING OUT STUFF THATS BEEN PREPARED EARLIER IN THE DAY, AND TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE THE SERVICE WAS THE CRUDEST IVE EVER EXPERIENCED, A PURE TOURIST TRAP, IF YOU WANT YOUR DATE TO THINK YOU DONT KNOW ANY BETTER GO THERE

Boisterous Fun with Good Eats – Go with a group, eat family style and be prepared for a loud night of fun with very good food at a very reasonable price. We ate here for the first time as a party of 8 on the Saturday evening after Christmas. For $34 pp we had a very good five course meal. Various musicians would wander in off the street to serenade the diners. Some were good, others were not. Some people enjoy this, others find it annoying. For example an asian guy with thick glasses who was obviously mentally challenged came in wearing a santa hat and holding a trumpet on which he could barely play a note. Nevertheless he was cheered and tipped by the patrons. As far as the meal goes, it was great to not have to fuss over a menu and decide what to order that would please 8 people. We just sat down and let them bring us food. The tomatoes and fresh mozzarella were excellent, served with a very good hot anitpasto of stuffed mushrooms, sauteed asparagus, roasted peppers and spedino alla romana. The pasta course was next, which consisted of a huge platter of fabulous gnocchi, tri-color tortellini and rigatoni. Next was the meat course, with roasted chicken, shrimp marinara and veal francaise. The veal was very tender but the shrimp were a bit over done. Finally came dessert, a big plate loaded with an assortment of delicious treats including tiramisu, italian cheesecake, tartufos, cannolis, bananas foster, etc. We had two magnums of wine, a red and a white, each very drinkable and at $28 each, very reasonable. We also ordered coffee, cappuccino and espresso which was extra. Unlike some others have reported, the tip was left up to us. With tax, tip & all it came to $57 per person, which I think is a great deal for all that good food in NYC.

It's Italian – My friends and I accidently stumbled upon Little Italy randomly on our last night in NYC. It was a friggin street party! We all fell in love.

So we decided to stop into La Mela and have some dinner. The experience was AWESOME! We all sat outside and two of us ordered a glass of wine. Instead of bringing two glasses our waiter brought the bottle and said to enjoy and if we didn't drink it all he wouldn't charge us for it all. Of course we drank it all!

The food was amazing and the wait staff were typical Italians...loud, slightly perverted and a hell of a lot of fun!

I highly recommend this place for a good time if nothing else.

It is what it is – La Mela is pretty typical of what I like to call a "red sauce joint". Is it romantic ? no. Is it the best food you ever had ? I hope not. Look, the thing about this place...Its not really trying to be any of those things. From the flourescent lighting to the vinyl tablecloths to the giant bottle of screw top house wine left on your table - "you pay for what you drink", you know what you are getting into here; go for a simple plate of spagetti and yummy garlicky vinegary salad, and a refreshing lack of pretension. The prices are totally reasonable, $12-$15 for an entree is virtually unheard of in downtown manhattan - generally that is the price of a drink anyplace nicer. They seated us promptly even though it was prime time on a saturday night, and brought us our food just as fast.

The reason why I like to go eat in little italy or chinatown is because the places are quirky, and thats what makes them fun. If you're looking for a gourmet experience, or a trendy decor, this place isn't for you. Which is fine - more for me !

CREDIT CARD FRAUDS – ALL,

PLEASE BE NOTED THAT THIS PLACE HAS BEEN LATELY CAUGHT FOR CREDIT CARD FRAUD. A FEW OF US VISITED THIS PLACE DUE TO ITS GOOD ONLINE REVIEWS. THE FOOD WAS SUB-PAR. THE SERVICE WAS HORRIBLE AS WE WERE FORCED TO ORDER WHAT THE WAITER WANTED US TO ORDER. THE WAITER WAS VERY RUDE AND LOUD AND WAS SPITTING WHEN TALKING. HOWEVER THE WORST CAME WHEN WE HAD PAID AND LEFT. WE WERE 5 COUPLES SO WE SPLIT THE BILL 5 WAYS USING 5 CREDIT CARDS. A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER WE DISCOVERED THAT ALL 5 OF US WERE CHARGED THE SAME AMOUNT TWICE OR THRICE. WE HAVE CONTACTED OUR CREDIT CARD COMPANIES AND ALSO TRIED CONTACTING THE RESTAURANT BUT WITH NO RESPONSE.

VISIT THIS PLACE ONLY IF YOU LIKE OVERRATED, OVERPRICED FOOD WHICH YOU WANT TO PAY FOR THRICE.

HORRIBLE. Stay away!! – This restaurant was the absolute WORST restaurant I have ever been to in my life. I was visiting NYC for the first time and decided to eat in a nice little restaurant in Little Italy. And boy, did I make the wrong choice. Right as we sat down, my friends and I noticed that the grated cheese in the shaker on our table had completely hardened and looked months old. Then the bread came and not only was it cold but hard as a rock. The waiter was also very inattentive the whole time.

The worst part was when the "food" came. I ordered a simple dish - spaghetti and marinara sauce, to which I added grilled chicken -- but the "marinara sauce" tasted and looked like oil mixed together with the sauce that comes with canned tomatoes and the chicken was cheap, dry, bland and looked like it came out of a Chinese fast food joint. My friends' dishes weren't any better - the Chicken Marsala was straight out of a Chinese restaurant and not a very good one at that and the Fettuccine Alfredo was overrun with oily sauce.

We all ended up paying $20+ for our meal and felt sick for the rest of the day. AVOID this horrible tourist trap!!

Great Italian Food! – I never write reviews but I felt the need to let everyone in on one of the best kept secrets in NYC, and that's La Mela on Mulberry Street in Little Italy! It's not the fanciest place in the world but if you're looking for a traditional and festive atmosphere with spectacular food, La Mela is your place. Do yourself a favor and don't even look at the menu. Just let the wait staff do their thing and bring you out the family style prix-fix selections. Every course is just simply amazing, especially the pastas! I've lived in NYC my entire life and have never had better Italian food on a more consistent basis then at La Mela. It can get a bit pricey (about $30 a person without alchohol) but it's worth every penny!

Great food, lots of fun – Im from Houston Texas and was visiting New York. We wanted to have lunch in Little Italy and found this place. The food was great, I really like it and have never had such good italian food. The wait staff have a little attitude but its expected, makes you think you are with the Sopranos haha, I liked it. I got to practice my italian and they were really nice. This is a great place and I will be coming back.
