Widely considered the best Shanghai-style restaurant in New York, Shang Hai Cuisine crosses the finish line against a strong field: just on the same block can be found stalwarts Nice Green Bo, Joe's Shanghai, and 456 Shanghai within a few hundred feet. All have their strengths, but a Shanghai restaurant is judged by its siu lim bao (juicy buns) and the ones at Shang Hai Cuisine rock: the dough is thin and the meat coarse, the broth both unctuous and flavorful. Run don't walk.
extremely bad service – I went to this restaurant several times and will not go back again. My first experience was okay. The food was authentic and the waiters and waitresses looked very fierce. I had a very bad experience during my third visit. I brought my friend from Thailand to this restaurant. My friend did not know how much tip she should give after she paid for the food as she was not use to giving tip in this country. The waitresses counted the tips and gave her an insulting look as if my friend did not have enough money to pay for the food. I felt very embarrassed and my friend was very upset over that incident. I don?t think we should be treated that way just because my friend did not give enough tips. Bad service!!!!
Great food, worth at least one visit – I go here all the time and the place is always packed. The soup dumplings are absolutely delicious, and so are the rest of their appetizers. If you're curious to try some good Shanghai cuisine, this is the place to go. But don't go here if you expect to be treated like royalty.
good food with terrible service – The food is very good (depends on what you ordered). Unfortunately the service is very bad. The waitresses are very rude and unprofessional.
They give Shanghainese food a bad name – The food was below mediocre, service was horrible. They ignored us for awhile before seating us. When we asked for more peanuts (as snacks), they asked us to pay $0.50 for a little dish. They left out rice we had ordered and ignored us twice when we asked for more water. If you are looking for delicious Shanghainese food, this IS NOT the place to go.
extremely poor service – the food is so so, but the service (esp. the female manager in black) is poor. The woman never put a slight smile on her face. We've been there a couple times, but only complained once about a dumpling dish that seemed cooked overnight. she is being unreasonable by saying " this dish has been ordered thousand times, you are the first one to complain about it".... we literally heard her swearing about people who decided to leave after reading the menu. with such unprofessional service, they will definitely lose business.
Best mini juicy bun in town – I have been to many places to try the mini juicy buns and this place has by far the best! It's much less greasy than Joe Shanghai and has a lot more soup inside. All three varieties are very good. Their dishes are also very authentic and delicious!
one of the best shanghainese restaurants in new york city. unlike other places in the city, food is prepared by real shanghainese (people in the kitchen do speak in the shanghai dialect). the price is very reasonable.
