WORST experience EVER – Myself and 5 friends had a reservation on Saturday night for 6 people at 7:15. We arrived all together at 7:10. We were told it was a 10 minute wait. At 7:25 we saw a table open up (we had to wait in the cold outside as there is NO room inside). We were told that table would not fit us and we would have to wait another 30 minutes. No apology or anything. We left and went to a great Thai place instead. DO NOT go to the place with a reservation and expect to be treated properly. I will NEVER return to even try the food. It did not smell that great. The kitchen is just about in the dining room. STAY CLEAR.
Good food in low-key neighborhood fixture – This place had some good food; our group loved the chorizo. It has that run-down, "been there forever" look. They don't really have a customer restroom but you're allowed to squeeze by the cooks in the back room to use the staff restroom / former broom closet. It really is that ridiculous. Go eat there with an empty bladder and at a low-traffic time.
Best cuban hands down – This is truly one of the best places for authentic Cuban food. If you are a seafood lover, the shrimp ceviche is highly recommended as a starter, followed by the Varadero rice
with shrimp and shredded chicken. If that's one too many shrimp dishes for your palate, go for the traditional cuban ropa vieja consisting of cuban shredded skirt steak with rice and beans. Their wine list is pretty decent, I recommend a bottle of the reserve, but of course you can't skip the sangria when having good cuban food.
The only complaint I have is on the service. Been there 2x and only one waitress for tables, even though the place is small and intimate, one waitress / waiter is just not enough especially on a Thursday / Friday night.
Havana Nights – We went on a scorchingly hot night which may have been our only mistake. It was hotter inside than outside with one a/c unit barely working above the door with two ceiling fans.
The shrimp ceviche was delicious, the lentil soup fair. The arroz con pollo forgettable, the ropa vieja was good. The sangria one person ordered never came but was on the bill. The service was painfully slow. Viva Cuba!
Small, but feisty! – Don't be fooled by appearances. Barely larger than a New York City living room, Little Havana is easy to walk by on a street that boasts some of the Village's more upscale, more decorative restaurants, but it is undoubtedly just as good. You'll find no frills, flavorful Cuban food in an atmosphere that doesn't try to win you over with appearance alone. The table next to us was overbearingly loud, and as a courtesy the waitress brought us over a free half-pitcher of sangria. The flan's consistency was perfect and the salmon was light and tasty. I highly recommend this place for an unexpectedly delicious experience.
Good food, good sangria! – My friend lives nearby and eats here all the time, it was my first time trying it out. I ordered the ropa vieja, she had the roasted salmon and we shared a pitcher of sangria, which was really good. Looks are deceiving, my ropa vieja looked like a dry small portion, but it was filling, and so tender and tasty. The restaurant is small, there were under 15 tables, but it wasn't annoyingly crowded at all. I need to get the recipe for that sangria!
Very Nice Cuban Place – The menu was traditional cuban with a few additional treats. The Ceviche was a standout, but everything was above average from the fried plantain and refried beans to the homemade guac and yellow rice. It ranked with some of the better places I've eaten at it Key West. The waiter (who may have been the owner) was pleasant and attentive. I will go back. I would recommend to friends.
West Village quaint mixes with Cuban flair. – In Short
The Cuban outpost joins the ranks of intimately spaced restaurants on this historic street. Guests relax at softly lit square tables inside the 19-seat restaurant. A bright Caribbean mural painted in oranges and greens captures a Cuban landscape, while the menu renders traditional cuisine, with additional chorizo available with every item. Choices include shrimp seviche salad, ropa vieja (shredded steak with rice and beans), roasted salmon with tostones and a Cuban flan denouement.
Good, basic, Cuban. – Good, basic, no frills Cuban. Great spot for those nights when you don't want italian, don't want sushi, don't want anything, hmmm... how about Cuban?!
Not bad – If only the service were faster, and the menu not so limited, this could really be something, although I'm not saying that I don't like it, I do, its a good restaurant, with some really good entress, of course Pearl is right down the street, and that place is amazing!
