Totally agree with last 2 reviews - owner is a nightmare – It is so sad when a lovely, picturesque cozy little restaurant such as this is ruined by an arrogant, offensive self-absorbed owner, who rather unfortunately, insists on being in the restaurant from time to time. We also sent a steak back, only to have it returned to us by this sour woman telling us it was fine, and that we were wrong and she was right. I am an investor in another (successful) restaurant, and I would lose it entirely if I saw any of the managers treat a customer that way. When you begin to concern yourself about the cost of the lost piece of meat, rather than the repeat business from that customer? You've completely lost the plot. For the record, it's a restaurant, not your personal dining room. Keep it up though, it may just be soon.
Will come back here, but only after poking my head in first to see if that wench is ensconced in her "spot"....ie taking up half the bar with her newspaper glaring at everyone who walks in. If she is, I'd rather eat at McDonalds
Great atmosphere, rude owner so-so food – I'm a foodie who eats dinner out at least three times per week and lunch out just as often. Went here for the first time a few nights ago and while the bartender was very nice, the woman who owns the place has a really negative attitude.
The crab cakes tasted good but had lots of bits of thin, inner shell in them which means the crab meat was not picked over well. The cassoulette was packed with meats but overpowered with a backed bean base which, although interesting, basically ruins it.
The waiter was attentive but when I paid my bill (had to run to an ATM because they do not take anything but Amex which, being an accountant, tells me they must have issues with credit as no one in their right mind would pay 3.5% of every transation for an Amex card when they could pay 1.3% for Visa/Mastercard transactions) in cash he asked me that rude question "do you want change" and when I said yes was annoyed. I left him a 25% tip but clearly as with many waiters today he seemed to think it was too much work to make an extra trip to give me change. Usually when waiters say that I let them have it as I find it to be very unprofessional.
I might try the place once more but if their other food is of less than stellar quality that will be it. Atmostphere is great but when the food and owner AND service is somewhat in question - who cares?
Ok food given the price point, keep the owner out! – When you're paying $38 for steak/frites, the steak should be cooked as instructed..kitchens make mistakes I understand but for the owner (the one who took the best seat at the bar to herself and not for customers and then kept the door open to please herself whilst others were cold) is bad enough, but to then return from the kitchen with my returned steak and say "it is medium isn't it" (it was but I'd ordered medium-rare (as I said for $38 I get picky) is indefensible...almost as much as her "enjoy the steak snipe as she finally (and to everyone's joy) left! I will go back, but I will check who's around first...the bar-tender made up for her lack of social skills however.
A gem – I'm far from a hard core foodie but my date and I both thoroughly enjoyed our meals and the overall experience for dinner here on a busy Friday night. With an 8:30 reservation, we were promptly seated; the host and wait staff were friendly, informative and effecient; the noise level was relatively quiet; the space was properly lit (not bright) and romantic. And the food, incl. escargot, duck confit and the steak, was wonderful. Factor in the upbeat yet unpretentious vibe, and I will certainly be back.
Great everything – I love this place. I usually go alone and I like sitting in the front by the bar. Oysters are always fresh and amazing. Big pour on the wine. Food is always good and they will accomodate your requests to remove or add ingredients to a dish. Staff always greets you with a smile. True it is small but it doesn't feel cramped like other places in the area. They don't try to fit in just one more table. They keep it comfortable.
Vive la Provence – Need a French Cassolet on a cold night to warm the soul - there's none more delicious in NYC. We stumbled into this French restaurant one freezing night to find the most comforting food; the warmest host;s and the friendliest and most knowledgeable set of staff - truly devine from start to finish. The wine pairing was spot-on (and inexpensive). Even though I claim to be an expert in seafood- these crabcakes made me weep with joy. I never determined their unfamiliar spice- but it was pefect harmony with the crab. My partners steak frites were half the cost of the previous night's with twice as much spirit and taste. For an inexpensive, yet intimate and delicious night out - Ca c'est magnifique.
Romantic Dining – this restaurant serves truly delicious food in a fantastic, personal atmosphere. I would recommend this for couples. If you are looking for a Monkey Night Out with friends, probably not a good option. But for a little romance, and some great vittles, this is a top choice.
Great For Special Occasions.. – Le Gigot is one of my favorite restaurants in NY. I've dined here many times with my partner and always walk away satisfied. I've enjoyed every meal I've had there. I especially recommend them for their wine selection and terrific service. Great for special occasions.
Good Atmosphere and Fantastic Food – A classic old-fashioned restaurant with great service, tons of atmosphere and fantastic food. We've been there several times, and every single thing we've ordered has been awesome. The chocolate cake with creme Anglaise was superb. We were absolutely positive we couldn't eat another bite until we got a whiff of that chocolatey goodness. Ate every bite. We usually are celebrating when we go there, so we order appetizers, entree, dessert and wine AND cocktails, and spend about $250. Its not cheap, but its not as pricey as one of those molecular gastronomy places.
Wonderful French Dinner – My husband, brother and I went to Le Gigot for dinner and enjoyed our dinner. Our waiter was excellent, pacing out our meal so nicely. Everything was delicious, from the lobster salad and escargot to the duck confit and chocolate dessert. Even though the room was extremely tiny, we never felt crowded at our table. I would definitely recommend and return to Le Gigot.
