Worst counter service – I agree with everyone writing about the the terrible counter service. The guy behind the counter is a complete waste. He scowls when you order, never says thank you, doesn't give you a bag unless you ask, takes forever. I've been here twice and the first time this happened. So I thought I'd give it another try and be extra nice and it was the same rude service if not worse. The food is all right but definitely not worth the attitude. i work 5 blocks down at a large corporation and am telling everyone i work with not to go there.
Worst Service But At Least They're Consistent – Twice this week I've gone in for coffee, stood at the counter and waited while three people looked at me, not one "can I help you?" The "manager" if that's what he is, is utterly useless. Too busy socializing (to the waitress--"why are you wearing a hat?") to wait on customers. I'm writing this on August 6, 1008, at 5:15, I was in about 5 pm, so if the owner is reading, you should be able to figure out who was working. Second time this week, same appalling service. Never again. And the coffee is weak anyway. Go to Grey Dog.
Great Dinner Experience – I recently had dinner at Out of the Kitchen outside and had a terrific experience.
The waitstaff were competent and polite.
The food was terrific and fresh.
Everything arrived hot and promptly.
Had a delicious cheesecake for dessert and it was a nice way to spend a summer evening.
My experience was all in all a strong thumbs up.
Awful table service, too – I had dinner here recently, mostly so that I could sit outside. Our two servers were clueless, needing to be asked to bring our wine after 20 minutes (and then it still took awhile), forgetting part of the order, offering sweetly to refill water and then disappearing for half an hour, blaming each other for poor service, all while the place was almost empty. Bizarre! The food was fine; nothing for which I'd withstand the confused and negligent service.
Worst Counter Service Ever – It's a shame b/c I live right around the corner from this place, but man, that Counter guy ruins the place! He is very surly. God forbid you just come in for a muffin. It's like counter service is for second-class citizens only. I wonder how the owner does not know this about his personality. Last time I went in there to get coffee (which I still occasionally do b/c I'm short on time, etc.) the woman next to me in line said the same thing about the counter service. The food can be good, but it can take FOREVER I also agree that the last time I went in there the cupcakes were stale. I pray for new management, b/c it's just too close to my place to be this bad.
Why such angst-ridden counter people? – I couldn't agree more with the last review. The guy at the counter just looks and acts miserable. Not a pleasant way to buy your food - he ruins the place. The food was decent, not great, but that guy's atitude knocked my rating down. Who needs that?
Nasty, slow service. Food used to be better... – Before they moved, the food was better, as was the service. Now - surly, stupid, and slow service. Got a stale cupcake yesterday - it must have been at least a day old with fresh frosting. The waitress couldn't have been less interested in taking our order although the place was completely empty. The sirloin burger came out RAW and she had the nerve to ask us if we had ordered the turkey burger. She's our waitress - shouldn't she KNOW what she brought us? The cashier is a very unpleasant fellow - glares and smirks. I live around the corner and will avoid this place forever. OOTK was lifetimes better when it was small and up the street. What happened??
Bigger not necessarily better – This used to be one of my favorite places to go for lunch. Since moving to its bigger location, the counter service has been extremely slow and the lines are always backed up. It was nice to see additional grill options on the menu, but the kitchen has been slow as well. I'm hoping that these growing pains can be worked out and that this won't be a bigger not being better situation.
Editorial Review – Desserts are their specialty, but this spot also offers breakfast, lunch and dinner fare, including sandwiches, salads, smoothies and more.
Fantastic Baked Goods, Friendly Counter Service – A stickler for a good cupcake and at least decent service, my expectations for both are surpassed whenever I visit Out of the Kitchen. I LOVE the cupcakes here: moist, not overly sweet, their simplicity lends a "homemade" taste factor to them. I have visited a few times and each time, whomever is behind the counter is always pleasant and doesn't act like they're birthing a child for me when putting my cupcakes in a bag. They're actually willing to help, which seems to be an anomaly for NYC bakeries!
They have lots of baked goods from which to choose, as well as sandwiches and other lunchtime fare - which also look great, but my heart is always with their cupcakes!! Twice I have bought apple pies here as well, and both times they were delicious...again, not overly sweet, the apples were tender and slightly tart, the crust was light and flaky, and the pie had that "homemade" thing about it.
Overall, a great little shop. I hope they never change!
