Immense, archetypal, and of matchless New York cred (this was after all the site of the famous Paul Castellano hit that made John Gotti) Sparks is the steakhouse of choice for native New Yorkers with a sense of history. The beef is prime but not dry-aged, which is more than OK with me.

Quality of food was excellent. Service- heated. Meat completely done. Bottles the best - Gold oak.I will be back. For sure.......LOVE THAT PLACE

The key differentiator between Cause and the other topnotch meat homes is the weather and category it projects. While others equivalent it in food, the weather at Cause is devoid of fellow in its classification.

Good Old Sparks Steak House – I have been coming to sparks since the 80's what a great food. You get what you paid for. The greatest cuts of beef around. 5 stars for me.

RIP Sparks (NO STARS) – Sparks used to be great. But it seems like the shootings and staff lawsuits have taken a toll on the establishment as it's now a complete den of disfunction.

I made a reservation 2 weeks in advance for my husband's birthday. They confirmed the date and time and I never thought twice about it. The night of our reservation we showed up for dinner to find the doors locked and the place closed. Needless to say we were furious. What decent NYC restaurant will make a reservation on a night they're closed?!

When I called the next day the managers could not have been more rude or unhelpful. The only thing they were concerned with was the date and time I called to make the reservation and the closest thing I got to an apology was "I hear you."

I WILL NEVER RETURN TO THIS RESTAURANT. If the staff is this completely incompetent making a simple reservation, there is no way I'd trust the food there. My husband and I went around the corner to Palm Too and had an INCREDIBLE dinner complimented by an amazing, super accommodating staff. RIP Sparks. You're officially dead to us.

Magnificently Humiliating – The draw must still be that Paul Castellano was murdered on his way in. Ugly legacy for an ugly restaurant. Dining in a funeral parlor is what it was like for me. Dark, dreary and old. Looked like it hadn't been dusted in a while. My husband and I had different selections of steak yet they both had the same exact mushroom sauce on top. The waitstaff was demonstrably arrogant and willfully unhelpful. I don't know what the good ratings are about, this place is etched in my mind as the worst dining experience of my life.

A sprawling, old-school, ultra-masculine midtown steakhouse. – Sparks gained its most enduring fame when mobster Paul Castellano was assassinated on his way in, but that just proves that its meat is worth dying for. OK, maybe that's an exaggeration. Certainly no one comes here for their health--or the decor, which consists mostly of paintings of dead trees in winter and vast expanses of tables filled with hungry he-men and their dates. What you do get at Sparks is some of the city's best prime beef, expertly broiled and served unsliced and without effeminate garniture. The lamb chops, veal and other meats are also of the highest order, and the wine list is one of the biggest in New York.

Really excellent meal – Visiting NY from the UK for the first time we plumbed the depths of CitySearch for recommendations for a good Steak House and chose one within easy walking distance of our hotel. We're both sure that we chose well. Sparks is large but still manages to be inviting. We were seated quickly and our allocated table served by a pleasant and attentive waiter - Juan (from Argentina, we later learned). The menu, thankfully, is very simple with only 10 or so appetisers and slightly more entrees to choose form. The same cannot be said for the winelist. That was one of the most extensive winelist we've been presented with in the US.

Our chosen steaks were cooked to perfection as was our choice of vegetables. We really can't find any room for criticism of the food quality (and that's unusual for us!). Our deserts were OK - nothing remarkable or noteworthy - except that the Raspberry Romanoff didn't live up to it's "Rich but Good" title. As for service, Juan did a superb job. He found the right balance of attention, chat and pace. We never felt rushed at any point despite the restaurant being very busy. So why, you ask, do we only give it 4 stars? That's because of two things. Firstly, this was an expensive meal. The old addage "You get what you pay for" is true but in this restaurant, you pay for everything! The entree's price does not include any sides whatsoever. Quite surprising given the $40plus price-tag per entree. The second reason is the manner of the Maitre-De (spelling?). He was abrupt and arrogant - verging on rude - far too full of his own importance and apparently oblivious to the fact that customers pay his wage! That having been said, we really did enjoy this meal and would definitely recommend for the occaional "splurge" outing.
