Avoid this place – If I were starving and came up to this place I would rather die, And if you try to eat there you just might. You can't understand the wait staff as they try to hand you a filthy menu, at a dirty table. Best of all the pastrami is lousy. I could go on and on but I am off to Katz's deli for a real pastrami sandwich.......
DIRTY, UNPROFESSIONAL AND RUDE!! – Horrible customer service! My partner and i went for early dinner, good enough it wasn't busy, we wanted to sit by the window, Oh my Gosh, it was a big NO NO NO!! by the host, a short bald man, The reason why? Because those tables are for 4people only!! I'll understand if it was busy, but the place was just empty!! Even with the really bad attitude we got from that man, we decided to stay..We should have known better!! Trust me!! The food was tasteless but we didn't complain, we just wanted to leave..The service was ok, t'ill our waiter give us a check including the 'TIPS"!!!! They figure out simpy because we were talking another language other than english. But Guess what STAGE DELI?? We are foreigners that been living in America for the longest!! It's simply Disrespectful and illegal to add Service Charge if not stated on your menu or anywhere clients can see it!! You are lucky u haven't been slapped with a suit yet! Never experienced anything like it, and we go dinning often.
An Excellent Deli! – Please do NOT listen to people who rag about the prices at this place. Only two NYC eateries, the Stage Deli and Ben Benson's, are worth the prices they charge for food. Sandwiches are gigantic and fit for sharing, fries are thick and delicious (order with gravy), Dr. Brown's soda is always cold and good, and the cheesecake.....BEST IN NEW YORK, maybe BEST ANYWHERE. A slice can be shared among 5 people. The pickles are fresh and thick and crunchy. Yes, it is small, yes, it is always busy, but you are in New York City. Atmospheric restaurant, traditional loud, New York deli. You want quiet, get the food to go and sit at home. The walls are lined with pictures of the Broadway stars that have eaten there. Some have sandwiches named after them. The wait staff is busy like crazy, so cut them some slack. This is such a terrific, authentic New York deli. Just relax and enjoy!
So Unbearably Bad - I would NEVER recommend!! – I went here on a random, rainy Monday night, and let me tell you - it was horrendous. "It" being the atmosphere, price, set-up, and especially service. I have never had to pay $18.95 for a freakin turkey sandwich - I don't care if it piled 5 layers deep with meat, it still is not worth that. Not to mention, that price only grants you the sandwich and a pickle - no salad, fries, or friendly smile to serve you. Our food came out at all different times, the waitress was terribly rude, my water was served warm without ice, and I had to get up and request my check since she was "so busy" with her 1 other table. This place was absolutely awful and I would NEVER recommend going.
Goooooood Deli! – We were in New York for our annual trip, and wanted some deli before catching The 39 Steps on Broadway. We've eaten at Stage Deli previously and this time was just as good! Our waitress was a wonderful demure woman who was attentive but not overly so. We split a turkey sandwich and green salad, and while the salad was typical iceberg deli fare the turkey sandwich was delicious. Very filling, and with the salad it was a great meal for two.
We'll keep coming back to Stage Deli - recommended!
Awesome Food – I took my wife on a surprise trip to NY for her 40th. The Stage came highly recommended by several people. I can now see why. My wife and I had never tried Pastrami or Corned Beef. We ordered the Triple Decker combo. WOW! What a sandwich. We were not crazy about the Corned Beef but we LOVED the Pastrami. A couple of days later we returned for the Cheesecake. That was just as good. I can't wait to go back next time.
Get the Pastrami! – If you are going to the Stage deli, chances are someone has suggested it to you. And here's what else you should have been told, Get the Pastrami, try the Cheesecake and enjoy! If you are going there to have a quiet relaxing, non-touristy- lunch, then you aren't going there for the experience. We read about this place online and had it on the list of places to visit. Our driver also suggested it as it was in very close proximity to our hotel. So after a big day of sightseeing and working up an appetite we popped in for lunch- it was crowded and you'd have thought there were no available seats. But we were seated right away. We split a Pastrami sandwich and a house salad. One suggestion is to get the small house salad b/c that would be sufficient to share between 2 people. It's busy, it's relatively loud, but so is NYC! Enjoy it, you will not be sorry! Go for the specials!
Awesome cheescake – Forget the sandwiches and go right for the cheescake at this theater district mainstay (you won't have room if you don't). The portions are enormous, by all means share. the meat in your sandwich migh be a bit dry and underseasoned. But, again, you go there for the CHEESECAKE, I always get blueberry but you can take your pick from an excellent variety. It's the best cheesecake in the world.
Tourist Magnet – I went here once and ordered a meatloaf sandwich. The prices are a little steep for deli fare, but that's to be expected, I suppose, of any famous or popular Manhattan deli (i.e. Carnegie, or Ben's). The sandwich was gigantic. However, the meatloaf itself was pretty bland. There didn't seem to be much to it, other than a bunch of ground beef and bread crumbs. There weren't any complimentary sides (not even a pickle or cole slaw) and the only condiment available to add any flavor was mustard. AND the sandwich was over 12 bucks! The patrons of the deli appeared to be mostly out-of-towners, which I took as sign that this place isn't exactly a favorite for New Yorkers that regular the authentic delicatessens. If seeking a true New York deli experience, seek elsewhere.
It is what it is-it's great – We love visiting NYC, and every single time we go to the Stage-it's a tradition. The food is awesome, service is usually very good, and it's just so New York. For my family a visit to NY without going to the Stage would feel wrong! We love the atmosphere.
