Young and on a Budget – I personally have never understood why people pay hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars on a hotel room when they are traveling exclusively to sight see. If you are coming to New York with the intention of sight seeing for most of the day, then a ritzy hotel like the Waldorf is really a waste of your money. Having said that you don't want a cheap hotel in a dangerous neighborhood even if you are only spending a few hours every morning and night there. The compromise is the Mayfair. My fiance and I spent four days there last October and it was a gem. The staff were very friendly and after a long day exploring the city it was so nice to see the welcoming safe atmosphere of the hotel lobby. Our room was very small but had nice ammenities such as very soft sheets and mattress, a flat screen tv, in room safe, and a charming bathroom. There are lots of little "mom-and-pop" type diners nearby and my fiance and I would typically have breakfast at one of them before beginning our day as tourists (sidenote: Cosmic diner highly recommended). All in all this is not one of the hotels that usually makes its way into the glossy brochures you look at when you are planning your trip to New York, however the price can't be beat and it is within walking distance of Times Square and the Theatre District. Highly recommended for those of us who come to NY to see the sights and aren't planning on spending tons of time in their hotels.

Bad Customer Service, Bad Experience – The room is definitely cozy! On a weeknd stay, there was a student film crew outside our door. They were filming a documentary and required us to turn down the tv and not even shower! The running of water caused too much noise for them. The front desk didn't know how long they would be. (Are they not supposed to write down who enters the hotel and for how long?) We tried to find the manager the next day, but he was conviently always "out of office" - we were even calling while we were out! At the end of our stay, I was charged $9.00 on my credit card statement and had to call to question the cost. The hotel faxed me an invoice, but it was for $9.00 debit and $9.00 credit, which equals...$0.00! I'm too tired to go back and forth with them now, so hope this review helps future patrons!

Quaint and Cozy – We found the Mayfair New York very late on a saturday night when no one else had available rooms. The man at the front desk was very accomodating. He let the three of us stay in a single room, and even went so far as to get us an extra futon mattress. Since it was so late (around 4am on sunday morning), he checked us in as sunday morning so we wouldn't have to check out until monday (thereby getting two nights for the price of one). Our room was very small, but it was clean and comfortable. We had plenty of clean sheets, extra blankets and pillows, cable tv, air conditioning, and a clean bathroom with a fairly large shower. It was very quiet, and the curtains were very effective at keeping the room dark in the morning. Overall, I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Europe meets in New York City. – The Scene
After a break of a few years, this European boutique hotel reopened in 1995 and has been a hit ever since. In trying to create a distinctive New York atmosphere for its guests, it features rare historic photographs from the Museum of the City of New York. The dark wood paneling in the lobby adds an extra touch of class.

The Details
The hotel's 78 rooms have been more recently renovated. Boxy television sets were replaced with flat screen TVs, and DSL lines have been installed. The decor has taken on a French twist, which, so far, has made the hotel's cosmopolitan guests very happy. The staff is helpful and eager to make restaurant recommendations.

Couldn't sleep – The rooms are cramped, even for New York in this price range, but clean and with a nice bathroom. The room hvac unit was very irritating and neither of us could sleep. Comfy is not a word I'd use. I'm not picky, all I want in the city is a place to shower and sleep, but this hotel let me down.
