STAY AWAY – I used to be a teacher at Berlitz, and I can tell you for a fact what kind of service they provide. They operate under the mentality of 'oh you can speak the language? you can teach it!' like i.e. 'oh you can speak SOME english? you can teach beginners!' And it's definitely not worth the money that you'll pay. For one month of group classes, they will charge you $1500. And they pay the teachers a grand total of $13 or $14 an hour!!!! Think about the quality of the teacher you'll get!! So they range from very talented to really really bad. The whole place is run by sales people, not by teachers, educators, or linguists. Save your money and go somewhere else.

I would advise against it – I would have to advise against this language program. I took an intermediate small group class. First they tested me to find out what my level was and placed me into a class way below my level in order to save money b/c that group only had one person in it (I've been told this happens a lot). They didn't have a class for the times they advertised. I insisted upon a more advanced level and they charged me more because the books had an extra level. The teachers range from very bad (no experience) to very good (teachers in their actual countries), but you don't get to stick with just one. If you miss a class you have to pay $90 to make it up. There's no way in 17, 2.25 hour sessions you won't miss one or two. Life happens. Sometimes, they forgot the date and time that our class met and we were left without a class that week. There are better, cheaper ways to learn a language. They have a great advertising campaign, and possibly a good program in theory, but in practice, the course that I took was overpriced, disorganized, inflexible and I had to assert myself to get what I needed out of the course. I want my more than $1200 back.

Advice from a teacher – This school is the worst school I have ever been in as a teacher. First of all, there are any criteria in the selection of the teachers. You just need to send your resume, get a meeting on Berlitz method and… voila… you are a teacher. I have several years’ f experience in teaching language lessons and I never thought that there was a school like this. Don´t go there. Everything is bad. They just have a good marketing strategy… they are not professional and they will charge you a lot!

Overpriced – Berlitz is overpriced, and they pay their teachers very little, so the quality of the teachers is all over the place. I had one outstanding teacher at Berlitz; the rest were so-so, not worth the $$ Berlitz was charging me. Berlitz also believes in rotating instructors, and I don't ascribe to their theory that this is helpful as it exposes the student to different accents. Instead, I think it is counter-productive for the beginning and intermediate student. Berlitz also hires part-time teachers who are independent contractors. They are essentially substitute teachers, and it can be a bit frustrating to go back and forth between the regular Berlitz instructors and these part-timers.

I think I could recommend Berlitz for a quick way of learning if you know that you will be traveling to a foreign country and want to be able to say and understand a few things. Berlitz is good at getting you to speak right away. Also, If you're interested in seriously studying a language, but are starting from scratch, Berlitz might be a good way to get started. Another plus are the Berlitz course materials--very good. But after a while, the $$ starts adding up, and it's time to move on.
