What a Gross Experience. – I have to report that I just ordered a Tuna Melt sandwich from an unfriendly fellow and low and behold I found a Large Black Hair while cutting into the sandwich. It made me gage, Disgusting. What a terrible experience. I will never go there again.
My favorite upper East Side luncheonette! – This is a wonderful neighborhood restaurant for excellent home style cooking. Two of my favorites are the roast turkey dinner and the grilled filet of sole. The sole is light, delicate, lemony with a hint of butter. They do a super job for breakfast and brunch too. I love their Eggs Florentine with home fries or their Health Kick Omelette. Prices are reasonable, but remember to bring cash.
Great breakfast diner – My husband and I went to EJ's a few weeks back and I have been meaning to write about it ever since. We had such a nice breakfast and just really enjoyed a true NYC diner. I had a cheddar cheese omelette with wheat toast and home fries--all delicious! My husband had pancakes and he ate every last bite! We just had a really nice experience with great service and I think EJ's is a must try if you are looking for a diner with great food.
EJ'S Luncheonette Is A Manhattan Pleaser! – Arguably, EJ's Luncheonette leaves the nearby competition gasping for air! How can you compete with EJ'S grilled ahi tuna kebob on a skewer, delicately grilled with onions, peppers, mushrooms and tomatoes served over basmati rice and steamed asparagus. You will find this extraordinary dish at a 3-star (***) restaurant for no less than $32.00. At EJ's I was astounded to find when the bill came that it was a $13.95 item. The Tuna was crispy and fresh and the vegetables truly complimented the Blue Plate Special.
For 40 cents less, on another occasion, I tried their homemade chicken chili with melted cheese, basmati rice, chopped red onions, sour cream and tortilla chips. I wound up also taking an order home as well.
Usually, I am too busy to eat at the restaurant and order in from EJ's. But on the limited occasions where I dined at EJ's, the service was particularly good. I would not say great because EJ's seems always to be very busy, no matter the hour of the day. Our waitress had a smile that never left her. She was extremely attentive to our needs.
I tried the coconut layer cake and a slice from the cranberry apple tart. Which did I prefer? It was a toss up.
Both are winners.

How do they keep the doors open?? – I clearly must be out of my mind. i've been a mainstay in the neighborhood for years and the lines outside EJ's weekend morning after weekend morning are curb deep. However, every single time i've ventured in the food is so heavy handedly prepared! It's nauseating. And yet, three times over the last 12 years I've talked (lulled) myself into returning. Surely, it couldn't be that bad? Wrong! i mean: how do you mess up French Toast? By making it taste like a phone book drenched in (carburetorr fluid) syrup. Ugh. Gross.
But-I'm clearly the minority. "Enjoy" New Yorkers!!!
Fun traditional diner experience in NYC – I've been living here in the city for 4 years, and EJ's (west or east side, either one) never disappoints....so long as you know what to expect. EJ's is not flashy, edgy, or sophistocated, nor does it try to be - this is a real diner, and that's about it. The food is good for the money, and will definitely satisfy your "naughty food" cravings that you may have on the weekends. The shakes rock, the coffee is always excellent, and sitting at the bar is fun. Their breakfast sausage is very yummy, and I think so long as you go there expecting that you may have to wait a bit for a table, it'll be a good time had by all. Or, better yet, go during the weekday when the wait is less and try it then. With the economy as it is, and all the sub-prime restaurants around that really rip you off for food that isn't that good, I think EJ's will prosper - its good food, inexpensive, and a fun diner atmosphere. What else could you want?!?
Eat at your own risk – Went to EJ's for Sunday Brunch with a group of friends. The place was extremely crowded which is what to be expected. We had a waitress who tried to hide her heavily bandaged hand with a latex glove and provided the worse service we have ever experienced. Shewas exceptionally slow, mixed up our orders and became annoyed when asked to correct them. At the end of our meal, to our horror, we say a huge insect crawl from the back of our booth. We informed the manager of our unwelcomed guest and he simply removed it and walked away. We all agreed that this would be the first and last time we patronize this establishment.
Nice upscale diner on the ues – I used to live right by ejs, food is better than average diner food, kind of like diner food with a twist. Instead of just bread they have fancy bread. I ised to order the wraps which were yummy and come with sweet potatoe fries. YUM. Overall yummy food but its the kind that you are going to feel really full afterwards.
Nothing Special – It's just a diner - waiter nice, food decent, ok prices, typical diner decor, not an overwhelmingly impressive experience. It's just average.
not what i expected – its always so busy and i have to say ive eaten there a few times and its never been what ive expected. the pancakes are spongy and tasteless, the coffee is HORRIBLE and the service is generally nice but slow. I think they are good for eggs but stay away from the pancakes.
