I agree with the other posters. This place has a serious customer service problem. I've often had very negative experiences and now try to find alternatives when I can.

They have an urn by the cash register that is marked "ashes of problem customers" -- I am not making this up. I think this says a lot about the store's view of their patrons, from the top down. The store has a pretty good selection, and a few excellent employees. Unfortunately, the bad apples spoil the experience for the customer so much that I try to avoid going whenever possible.

In this day and age, when customers have so many alternatives, it's surprising that a store would allow for (or perhaps encourage) so many rough edges.

I would not recommend this store.

Lousy Atmosphere and Customer Service

I walked in absolutely intending to buy two premium bikes for my kids. After standing around for 20 minutes watching salespeople come and go, someone finally came up to me and was reasonably helpful in finding the bikes. Once we had picked them out, I decided to ask for advice on getting a bike rack for my car. They didn't have the one he recommended in stock, so he said they could order it for me if I paid half in advance. I was hesitant to do so, and he said that he could always refund the price if it didn't fit or I didn't like it. I asked him to see if he could do better than that, i.e., to simply order it (since they said they were "out of stock" on it, this didn't seem like a big deal) and I would buy it if it seemed right when I came the following week to pick up the two bikes. He said he would ask his manager, and when he came back he said that not only would his manager not do that, but that he had overruled the offer to refund my down payment and instead said they would only give me store credit. That was really lame, especially to a customer who had just committed to buy two bikes. I told him that that attitude had cost them the sale, and walked out.

P.S. I bought the rack on Amazon for $50 less, and I bought the same two bikes at Danny's Cycles in Westchester, where the service was fantastic.

New to biking - great place to go – I live in the neighborhood and visited several shops in the area, never receiving as personalized service as in this shop. I made it clear that I was a novice to the sport, and that this would be my first road bike. I received a very thorough overview of just about everything a beginner could ever want to know, and left feeling much more informed, without feeling pressured to buy. I did return to the shop to buy my bike a few weeks later, especially after I saw how much time they spent fitting me on several different bikes, while other shops seemed to eyeball the basic fit, and didn't leave me very confident that the bike would be right for me. When I purchased my bike, they spent probably 30-45 minutes fitting me to the bike, measuring angles and making sure that I understood exactly how everything on my new bike worked. It definitely felt like a premium level of service, which has continued after I bought my bike as well. They swapped out several parts, free of charge, when I brought my bike in for a tune-up, and in my opinion, spend time on their customers, whether or not they are buying the highest end equipment.

great spot – This place was a life saver to a mom. I went in with a wheel that needed serious repair and within 5 minutes it was fixed. Good price, very friendly and most of all efficient. I highly recommend it.

Find another shop – This is my neighborhood bike shop, and I really wanted to like it. I have given it several chances to be the great neighborhood bike shop I hoped it would be, but it keeps disappointing. The mechanics are very good and I think it's OK for basic repairs, but I would not recommend buying a new bike here. My experiences here (repairs on my old bike, buying some gear, and now looking to invest in a new road bike) have been very lukewarm and much like another reviewer's (ronaldseymourz). What he describes in his review was very familiar to me--a good selection of bikes but an unwelcoming atmosphere, high prices on certain items, mediocre customer service, attitude from staff, lack of professionalism (not from the mechanics but from the sales people and manager), and unwillingness to accept responsibility or even apologize when an error was made that was clearly their fault.

As ronaldseymourz said in his review, there are many choices when it comes to buying a bike and it is better to buy from a shop that values you as a customer, whether you are buying the most expensive bike in the shop or not. And it is better to buy from a shop that goes through all your options honestly, instead of pointing you to the top of the price range in products, pushing what is in stock, or pressuring you to spend more than you want to. The manager wrote a review here saying that they are not as interested in selling bicycles as they are selling cycling but I don't believe it. The friendly, homey vibe is all surface. Their number one priority is selling bicycles and accessories and to get you to spend. And that's OK (its a bike shop after all). But be honest about it. And be fair and responsible. I don't think this shop is. I have had a much better experience at Larry’s on Second Avenue, and also at Tread Bikes all the way up in Inwood, and am still shopping around a little more before I make my decision about where to purchase my new bike. But I know it wont be here. I prefer to give my business to shops where I am treated with the same respect that I give to others, and where I don’t walk out feeling like I have just been scammed or that the staff couldn't care less beyond making an easy sale.

If you are willing to suck it up, are happy following all their recommendations and not having an opinion of your own, and don't mind being strong-armed, then your experience here might be better than mine. If you want better from the bike shop you patronize, then steer clear.

Great Service, Great Advice...Great Shop. – When you walk into your store, it is clear they are very professional (seeing the work area through the plate glass window at the front of the store helps!). Then, you meet the staff and you feel like you've walked into a family business. The great part, though, is that everyone in the family knows what they're talking about. This is a great place for cyclists and plain old bicyclists, alike!

Quality Bikes, Excellent Advice and Best Service in NYC – This is my neighborhood bike shop, although I have shopped at others in New York City, in the Hamptons, and in Connecticut. I am constantly running into other highly satisfied customers when I visit the store, others who, like me, swear by the expertise of the staff and the excellence of the mechanics.

There are some bike stores where the hauteur is so thick that you feel that if you are not prepared to spend north of $3,500 on a performance bike, you are really not worth their time. And there are others where they sell everything, but you realize after a while that that is part of the problem, that you are not getting good, unbiased, expert advice from people who live the sport and who really know what they are talking about..

Bicycles Plus carries good lines -- Giant, Cannondale, Specialized, a couple of others -- but they carry the models they know to be excellent in their class, the best in their categories (although they can order anything you want) and they make a real effort to figure out the right bike for you.

I have a hybrid bicycle which I purchased elsewhere, but as I have needed to upgrade one or another parts, I have since purchased a different seat and different tires on their recommendation, and in both cases been amazed at the difference in comfort and function I have experienced from following the advice I have received -- and I have been warned away from a couple of other purchases which I thought were great ideas, which really speaks well of the professionalism of the staff.

These guys are in the business because they love the sport of bicycling, and it shows. Go, talk to them, rely on them, listen. You won't be disappointed.

Great Staff & Service – Although I did not buy my bike from them, they have always been friendly and willing to share their knowledge with me. They were great in assisting with my gear and accessory purchases. I have yet to utilize their mechanics, but the shop area is always neat and I've observed them working with cyclists with mechanical problems; they are as friendly and helpful as the rest of the staff.

These guys are a really nice bunch and helped me find a bike I'm really happy with and are helping me already with my little modifications. Great service.

Great Customer Service! – I used to go to the bike store at Lexington and 88th Street but I got really fed up with their super-high prices on everything. Then, I discovered Larry & Jeff's Bicycles Plus NYC (about a mile from where I live) and they've been terrific. My old bike got fixed there a number of times and I bought my new bike there too after price-shopping at other bike stores. It also came with a 5 year free tune-up service. All other prices charged for repairs are really reasonable and never extortionate. Service is fast and friendly. The store may have had some difficulties a few years ago, but today it is great and I can highly recommend it.
