if you like airline food, this is a place for you – I should have read the rewievs !
Unfortunatley we did go to Il Valentino. We should have left noting the the empty dining room on our arrival or at any time soon after :
like when the bread arrived lightly toasted to mask being a day old
or when the appetizer was served slapped on the plate school cafeteria style
or when the highly recommended fish special of the day was heralded by a strong , not too pleasant odor from the other side of the room. It turned out to be inedible and possibly all together a different species than described ; prepared a different way-when we complained the waiter mumbled something resembeling sorry and offered to bring potatoes what were supposed to be in the entree. It was also 50% more expansive than anything else on the menu-unknown to us.
Any decent restaurant would have offered a replacement meal-the whole fish was returned on the plate-or at least a drink on the house.
The other daily special turned out to be a salt ladden green mush, called risotto ;neary a grain of rice identifiable in it.
At the end they refused to take credit cards for payment.
So , I have learned my lesson- next time i read the reviews before making reservations !!
Big pass and better of somewhere else – I eat out often and like to give a restaurant a couple of tries before deciding on the quality. I usually give good reviews but am convinced that this place if it wasn't part of a hotel would have long ago been shut down. I went for dinner on a Thursday and a couple of weeks later on a Friday evening and there were barely anyone there with a low lighting to suggest either no one wanted to be seen or so the guests couldn't see how empty the place was. Service was terrible with the most effort spent on trying to have us buy more and more wine. Obviously to hide the quality of the food. This place is way understaffed it seems as well and the attitude seems to be more of annoyance than helpfulness. The food was ok but the veal was nothing that any well regarded restaurant in town couldn't beat. A friend had the calamari and thought it was chewy. The salads were marginal each time. The desserts were ok but nothing worthwhile. My dinner companions both evenings felt the same way and we all vowed never to go back. There are just too many great italian places in NYC to enjoy a great meal without lousy service, ok food and an outrageous bill. The best part was the wine. This hotel should shut it down and bring in a good restaurant. Also very perplexed as to the good reviews for this place, either it is filled with octogenarians who have no taste buds or people who drank so much wine they could have been fed twinkies and thought it was filet mignon.
Old School – I eat here a lot... here is the low down... Its an older crowd wearing sport coats... YOU dont have too as far as i know, but thats the scene. When I go I dont wear one and they dont say anything. NOW if you like old fashioned and clarinet music and dont mind and over 60 crowd which me 31 does not mind sometimes this is the place for YOU. Great food, great service and wonderful entertainment by who i think is the owner.
A More Than Pleasant Surprise! – We just moved into the neighborhood and this place is virtually next door to us. So, we decided to try it the other night not expecting anything but a nearby, OK Italian meal. What a surprise! First off, the restaurant is a pretty, understated room that has a very comfortable feel. Then, the comfort level continues to rise when your waiter and waitstaff begin to serve you. They are professional, pleasant and very efficient. And, when the food comes out, you're in for another surprise! It's delicious! The best carpaccio plate I've ever had, a duck special and orichiette with veal sausage were all top-drawer! Deserts are a little on the "standard" side (tira mi su, Italian cheesecake) but, overall, the meal, service and ambience were terrific! Oh, by the way! There's great easy-listening music provided by Sol Yaged to round out the experience. What a package!
