I LOVE THE PLACE – Everything is great and the food is not only tasty but healthy for you. No BUTTER USED! I luv the place.. not sure whats wrong w these other people. My guess is that just complainers write reviews.
Spanish Tapas – Nice 50's East Side find with delicious Spanish plates paired with wonderful wines from the regions of Spain. We had the pleasure of meeting the proprietor Rufino Lopez who made us feel right at home and made just the right recommendations for us. The decor and vibe of the space felt very warm and inviting.
Anti infants and toddlers policies – Very aggressvie staf, no one knows how to smile, extremely anti young families policies, since no stroller are allowed and the whole restaurant functions with only one high chair. Kids are not premitted to walk even around their parents table. In brief the restaurant should say that families with children are not welcome, or not accept reservations with children or warn you about their ? policies while your making your reservation.
Their food is very good, but still will never go back to that place with or without children.
We have been around all the restaurant in the cities and never we experienced such behaviors.
Nothing great – Definitely overpriced. Service is so-so depending on who's there. Ordered the Paella. It was horrible! The worst I've ever had. Tapas also nothing to brag about. Potatas and chorizo are ok. Place is nothing special for what you're paying.
"Awful" would be an understatement – Decor: There is a bar area and a main dining room. Bar area is quite dark. We sat in the main dining room which was filled with the business lunch crowd (us included). The space is small and the tables could stand to be spaced farther apart. With the room filled, it was very noisy with conversation and sometimes hard to hear each other at our table.
Food: Mediocre at best. Do not order any of the salads - the dressings are too acidic and do not complement the greens well. Paella was nothing special and, at $38 per person, a huge disappointment. Portions are very small. The tapas were a hit-or-a-miss. Croquetas, chorizo, and wild musrooms were good. Patatas, almonds and asparagus could have been done much better. I've had a lot of tapas in the city and this place easily falls in the bottom three. Prices are very expensive and complete robbery for what you get.
Service: Absolutely terrible. To be fair, the host and the busboys were quite kind. However, the waiter we had was very rude and snobby. Rolling your eyes and sneering when a customer orders several appetizers but not an entree? Becoming exasperated and huffy when politely asked to be given one more minute to look over the menu? What an extreme lack of class for a restaurant that's supposed to be somewhat upscale.
Bottom line: I would not recommend this place to anyone. There are plenty of good restaurants in the area where your money will be better spent and the experience more pleasant.
Never again – Overpriced, food was average at best. Drinks were terrible--I switched to wine, harder to mess that up. We had a sampling from the tapas menu, I was starving (so usually food tastes better) but was very disappointed. Was downright shocked when the bill came, considering how unsatisfying the dining experience had been. Would never go back.
A Fantastic Valentine's Day – My husband took me to Solera for this Valentine's Day. The night nearly started off on the wrong foot, as the reservation my husband had made three weeks before was never written in, but luckily they had one table left, and we were seated immediately. We each had the six course tasting menu with wine pairing. I was pleasantly surprised by our waiter's in-depth knowledge of the composition of each dish and wine. Each dish was a wonderful combination of sauces, spices and meats. The tuna was a bit on the bitter side, but all of the other dishes were superb. The service was an "A-"; very quick to clear dishes and wine glasses, and came back with fresh silverware immediately. Between our two "main courses" (the tuna and rabbit) there was a distinguishable lull in the otherwise fast-paced service. Overall, an excellent experience was had.
Do not try – There are much better spanish restaurants in town. The food had no taste and the sangria tasted like water. We waited for over 30 min for a table.
Average and Over-priced – Had dinner at Solera while visiting, due to some good reviews. Started with a couple of glasses of wine and then moved to the mussels appetizer which was decently sized, but just ok. Dinner was the filet mignon which was also decent. Decor and service in this restaurant are above average but should be, given the price. Overall a dissapointing Spanish restaurant given the price. Even as a visiting tourist, I'm sure you can do better in NYC...
NEVER RETURNING TO SOLERA – At first, finding Solera was like finding a hidden treasure. However, we're NEVER going back.
First, we were seated next to a raucous, intoxicated bachelor party of over a dozen people. The three of us were shouting just to hear each other so we informed the manager that their poor behavior was ruining our evening. Then, the group confronted us for complaining about them and one drunk person even spit ice at our guest. We got into a shouting match while the manager stood there watching helplessly. It should never have come to this!!
Another time we were there a waiter spilled a hot red sauce on my husband's white shirt while he was serving the table next to us. They didn't even notice what they had done and then offered a half-assed apology and a bottle of seltzer water to clean the stain. It's just not worth going back!!
