The flagship of the mighty Gray's Papaya chain, this store sells hot dogs and sugary fruit drinks. Did I mention hot dogs? They're cheap and snappy, and brown, and -- most importantly -- served on toasty hot buns, which makes all the difference.
It fills the need – I went here because everybody says its sooo good. well i made my own opinion. I would say its a step up from a street cart but not the best around.
Average.. – I started hunting for the best hotdogs in New York and I found this place last week. I think the prices are reasonable, the taste was "ok" though. I mean, it's not really that good, but not that bad also. I think there are a lot more sumptuous hotdogs out there, but I'm still on my journey to find it out.
THEY DON'T WASH THEIR HANDS – At approximately 540 pm this evening I entered and placed my order. I then observed employee NOEL eating a donut over the buns. When I called him on it, he slunk down so I couldn't take a picture. I asked to speak to the manager but he wouldn't come over. When I got home I called the 8th street store but they told me to call tomorrow. Will be calling the Health Department instead. I love hot dogs like normal people do Starbuck's. Will never come back to this dangerous place where people do not wash their hands or put on gloves. Go to Mike's Papaya, Papaya Dog, or my favorite Papaya King if you want people to wash their hands before they handle your food. AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE YOU WILL SURELY CATCH IF THIS IDIOT HANDLES YOUR FOOD.
Hotdogs with Humor – There's something about living in New York that demands eating the occasional hotdog. It might be all the hotdog carts around Central Park, I'm not sure, but if you're in the park around W. 72nd and develop the sudden yearning for hotdogs, skip the carts and walk a few blocks over to Broadway and Gray's Papaya. You can't miss it, because the exterior is covered with puns in bold capital letters: "LET'S BE FRANK, WE WANT YOU TO BUY OUR FURTERS" and "FRANKS FOR YOUR BUSINESS!" The prices are every bit as good as, or better than, you'll find for a cart, plus, what hotdog cart have you ever seen that serves a drink called "Coconut Champagne"? An added bonus: they've got the least expensive bagels, muffins and croissants for take-out that I've ever found here in the City!
BAD dogs!!! – I don't understand why people think this place is so good. Four of us went and no one liked them. The dogs were small and tasted bad. Even with the onions and relish, they still tasted horrible. The fancy world famous papaya drinks... who said they were any good? Walgreens sells much better juices in a bottle, and cheaper. I have tried amazing hotdogs all over the US and South America, and I had some decent expectations for Grays Papaya, too bad it fell so far behind. So far the best I've had have been some from Mexico, plump, juicy, wrapped in bacon, slightly melted cheese with mayo and chips!!!
Garys' raises prices... again! – How is the new price of $4.45, raised from $3.50, a new "recession special" all that special? Used to be I'd go with the wife and we'd both order two dogs and a drink... and I'd often go back for more, but $9.90 hardly makes this a deal in a town where $2 dogs are a dime a dozen. Sure they are great but part of the greatness was the amazing deal... this is no longer the case. I'll be surprised if Gray's Papaya is still around next time I visit the city! Too bad...
Texans, too. – My family is from Texas and we visit NYC every now and again for a dose of theater and fun. No trip is complete without a trip to Gray's. This time, we were no where near 72nd street, but made the effort to stop by anyways. Yes, they are only dogs, but oh what wonderful dogs. We kick butt with BBQ in Texas, but no one here can make a good dog for diddley. We missed the Obama sign, and probably stood right behind it while chewing. I didn't vote for him, and I'm scared of what he might do, but my stomach and taste buds don't care about politics. They do know yummy-ness when they eat it.
Great hot dogs – You can get two hot dogs and a papaya drink for only $4.45, which is a really nice deal. And the hot dogs are so good-slightly crispy on the outside and just about perfect with a bit of mustard on them. Service is very fast, too. There's no seating to speak of, but just go across the street and sit on one of the benches by the 72nd st. subway station and enjoy your hot dogs and drinks there. If you like hot dogs you gotta try this place- you won't be disappointed!
Not paying for politics – I agree, it appears that lately anyone with exposure seems to think that we care what their political opinion is. We haven't visited GP's yet, and we were all set to go...but after hearing this news, we'll just go buy some hot dogs at the store and cook them up.
OBAMA HOT DOGS? ILL TAKE TWO..!!!!!!!!!!!!! – GRAY'S HOT DOGS ARE DELICOUS. ITS HARD TO SAY THAT ABOUT A HOT DOG, BUT THEY ARE WORTH TAKING A TRIP FROM S.I. JUST TO GET SOME. A FERRY, 2 TRAINS AND SOME GRAYS MAKE FOR A GREAT DAY!
AS FOR THEIR SUPPORT OF OBAMA, EVEN BETTER...
ADAMINNYC NEEDS TO LEAVE OUR GREAT STATE AND GO LIVE ELSEWHERE..
