Finally Happy – I just read the reviews below and it is funny how different of experiences ppl have at this salon.
I started going to Scott J years ago. Had a hairdresser that I liked, but could do without her attitude. Then she gave me a bad haircut and I decided to take my business elsewhere.
After 2 years of hopping around NYC every 3 months trying to find a hairdresser I could be loyal to, I had gotten some good cuts, some average cuts, some bad cuts and paid lots of different prices but never felt spending more than $100 was worth it (bc my friends never noticed that those cuts were any better).
FINALLY I WENT BACK TO AVEDA SCOTT J AND GOT MY HAIRCUT WITH NICKIE, who is a senior stylist. SHE WAS GREAT. Friendly but not phony or overly talkative. I told her I wanted a little off the ends and long layers (which is what i telly EVERY stylist) and she did a great job with the cut and blow out.. I am always nervous to go to a new stylist and leave with short hair. She did not go scissor happy. The haircut was $85 (which i have accepted as a fair price by nyc standards).
I'm excited my search for a hair dresser is finally over.
Really nice! – I just had my hair cut by Jocelyn and I LOVE it.
The staff was very friendly, the salon is in a great location and is very nicely set up and Jocelyn is extremely talanted.
When I went home and realized I needed a little more taken off the sides, I called and they fit me in later the same day, with Jocelyn, free of charge.
She took her time with the touch up and I really appreciated the attention to detail.
She got me and I look great!
Badd Customer Service – I called to make an appointment. I was on hold for awhile (5 minutes or more) but im a receptionist so i totally understand. The woman answered I asked if there was any space at 9:30, she said rudely and i mean rudely i dont know, no in the same breath. So i said very nicely literally just asking, o you dont know? and she said even nastier ehhh i can check even tho ugh i checked two seconds ago. I called her a bitch and hung up. BIIITCH, gettaa job that suites you.
Mediocre Staff, Awful Stylists. Avoid Juliette. – I am a long-time Aveda customer, Pure Privilege member, and have had my hair cut for years and years at various Aveda salons, and Scott J at Columbus was by far the worst customer service and experience I have ever had. I was given a haircut by Juliette. During our consultation I described what I wanted to Juliette, which was just a simple trim on the ends of my hair and a long fringe - so it would go below my eyebrow line. I made it very clear that I don't look good with a fringe shorter than that, and she agreed. I said it several times, to make sure. During my haircut, she chatted with me and others in the salon, so it seemed she was hardly looking at my hair. Then during the blowdry she gouged her fingernail into my eye, causing me a serious amount of pain, and making my contact fall out. It really was extremely careless, unprofessional and unhygenic. I had to go straight to the pharmacy afterwards to buy eye drops to soothe my eye, then the next day to an optometrist - it is still painful and red, because SHE SCRATCHED MY CORNEA. In fact, I had to take a 10 minute break in the middle of my haircut to rinse my eye and try and put a spare contact in, which stung because of my scratched cornea. Not an ideal start.
She then topped it all off by cuttin my fringe far too short on the first go - so short, in fact, that as soon as she cut it she said, "oh, I won't even need to trim or shorten that, it's pretty short". I was very upset to see that it was at least a half-inch up from my eyebrows already, especially seeing as the sole instruction I had given her was that I didn't want a short fringe. Then she said she would grab some small special flat irons which would flatten it out a bit; I said I'd rather she did it with the regular flat irons, as that is what I have at home. She seemed a bit flummoxed by this, but I think it's perfectly reasonable - when you get your hair cut at a salon, you want to know you are going to be able to style it when you get home. Of course, she was unable to flatten out my fringe with standard flat irons because it was WAY TOO SHORT and it stuck out from my forehead. She then tried to tell me my fringe would 'relax' later - impossible, as it was already straightened flat. She said, "oh, I guess you think it's too short, but I think it looks fine." Well, gee, thanks A LOT for not listening and deciding on your own what 'looks fine'.
I had an extremely important engagement that night which was why I had the haircut in the first place, and I had to go straight to another salon to try and fix the mess she made of my hair. I feel uncomfortable and extremely unhappy about the way I look, and furious that she wasn't able to follow a very simple request. Surely it is the practice of any good hairdresser to first cut the fringe slightly longer than necessary and trim from there? Not to cut it too short, and then have nowhere to go? Thanks to Scott J on Columbus, I had to attend an important work function feeling unattractive and with a red eye.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS, especially Juliette. One of the most unprofessional cuts of my life, and extremely expensive once you factor in the visit to the eye doctor. Oh, and she hung around afterwards for a tip.
PS - my fringe now sits a full inch up from my eyebrows when I try to straighten, blowdry and style at home. So I have gone to buy bobby pins and hairbands and will have to make do with those for a month. Thanks so much, Scott J.
Overall NOT worth it, disappointing based on reputation – GOOD: The only reason I trek up to here is b/c of Ellen. She cuts my hair amazingly everytime! I have long, layered, very thick hair (kind of like Blake Lively), and Ellen gets it right all the time. Plus she's super-nice, and doesn't force conversation if you don't want it (I like to just relax and zone out).
BAD: I had a Groupon ($50 for $100 worth), so I got the Hair Spa Treatment. Totally not worth it. Nicholas did it; his head/scalp massage was quite mediocre. Then he had some person-in-training shampoo me; this was the most PAINFUL experience ever!! It hurt soooo bad I actually teared up (NOTE: I've been to cheap Lifebooker places for around $20 that managed to successfully wash my hair completely pain-free). They then stuck me in a hair dyer and forgot about me to the point where my cut with Ellen started 20min late. I barely (and I mean barely) got a shoulder massage when they rinsed the treatment out, and definitely got NO hand massage, and was offered no tea/water at all. The sales associates also didn't know how to ring up the Groupon. At the end, I left the salon 30min later than was scheduled.
For a "reputable" salon (which I always thought they were), the execution of these services are completely unacceptable and still not worth the not-too-overpriced prices. I will consider coming back only b/c I can trust Ellen to cut my hair well.
Hope this helps!
Easy and Reasonable – I have been using this salon for 5 yrs and think a review about why I leave and why I come back might be helpful to others.
This place is easy for anyone to get to being near to a lot of subway lines and the prices are reasonable. I never feel ripped off. There is rarely any problem with getting an appointment when you want and they have a great choice of stylists etc.
The main issue I have with this place that makes me take my business elsewhere occasionally is that bad atmosphere. You really get the feeling the staff don't get along! It was definitely worse a couple of yrs ago and has improved a lot recently but the way it affects the customer is that you are sitting there while your stylist is hustling someone to blow-dry your hair. Then you feel like YOU are the problem. I can't tell you how many times I have sat in a chair while the staff bicker in the color mixing alcove! This does not mean you won't find friendly service because most of the staff are really friendly and I have no complaints about not getting what I asked for. I have never left there tho, thinking my cut or color was amazing. I always leave satsfied but always underwhelmed. Despite going there off and on for 5 yrs I still feel that they don't know my name at the desk and don't care either. I prefer a salon where I was encouraged to have some loyalty!
I have tried many stylists etc there and I would recommend Ellen for color. Betsy and Johnathon have both given me good cuts and most of all I recommend Juan for making brows look really really good.
Try this place, it's clean and efficient and you'll be satisfied and you won't feel robbed but you may not bother going back either!
bring back the spa!! – This is the most chaotic experince in which to have your hair done. Frenetic, assistant s ar e often better than the stylists.
Horrible blow outs-No need to go here. Try Paul Lebreque at Reebok fo r better stylists and quieter yet still "bustling " city atmosphere.
Terrble Color - way overpriced – I went in for a single process and half head of highlights. The color is terrible. So much darker than what I wanted and very very dull. I have a huge color stain along my hairline and to top it off it cost $50 more than Cutler and Bumble. Do not go here for color.
More trouble than its worth! – The front desk staff made a huge fuss about a payment error that they had made (arguing with one-another, acting annoyed with me, etc.)-- I left feeling embarrassed and stressed out with a not-so-great overpriced haircut.
loyal customer of Scott J for over 3 yrs – I have been coming to Scott J on Columbus Ave for 4 yrs and will continue to as long as i live in nyc! i am truly disturbed by all the negative reviews that are written on here and find them to hard to believe. I had my hair colored by a few different stylists in the beginning but jennifer has been doing my hair for the past for the past 3 yrs---and she is the only one who will ever do my hair for the rest of my life. The color job she does on my hair is out of this world--every single time i am walking home from getting my hair colored by jennifer, i have at least 3 people stop me to comment on my hairu---i send them directly to her. Aside from the best colorist in the world, the people are so nice there. the boys are always coming over and giving me hand massages and checking on me. I go to this salon every 5-6 weeks and only have positive experiences. There was one time that i got there and saw some people talking without coming to check on me-- i didnt say anything taht night but i did call the manager and explain the situation. I have never had that happen again. If you want a top notch aveda hair salon with insanely great prices...check out scxott j--it is the best in my opinion
