Rude Staff – I tried to call today to find out what time the store closes so I could make a donation and got the most rude woman on the phone.

I repeated the VERY simple question of "What time do you close today?" several times to which she responded, "how can I help you?"

I even slowed my speech and enuciated the sentence even clearer each time. After the third time, she snapped at me, "I'm trying to help you and all you do is keep repeating repeating repeating the same question!" and then hung up.

I will still drop off my donations as I hope someone out there can benefit from my unwanted things and they should not be punished. But I am not sure how much clearer that woman needed WHAT TIME DO YOU CLOSE TODAY? explained to her.

Goodwill Junky – I love shopping Goodwill, though a native I left New York years ago before I became an afficionado of Goodwill. I knew since I was going to be in New York for a vacation and knowing the NY habit of "if there's no room in the apartment, throw it out or take it to Goodwill". I had made a note of this store, since we would be staying in the neighborhood. I waited impatiently for the family to leave our vacation apartment to do their thing, the family thinks Goodwill is just a respository for unwanted junk, (if they only knew). I left the apartment as soon as their taxi picked them up, I walked as fast as possible to Goodwill, knowing I could not take big items on the plane, I opted for jewelry, books and other small items of interest. I collect old costume jewelry and found 4 pieces right off the bat, 2 books that interesed me, a great unworn t-shirt, a pair of Perry Ellis sunglasses and a pair of those famous Jackie O' sunglasses from the 80's, and even managed to find 2 sets of fine bone china by Royal Albert that I could fit in my carry on, The family may have their souvenirs of the local sights, but I have the real treasures. Next time your in New York, you might just find the right souvenir at your neighborhood Goodwill.

Once you hit the jackpot once, you'll be hooked for life. – The Scene
A bit grungy, this store is filled with people who've just cleaned out their basements, and those intent on reaping the benefits of their neighbor's spring cleaning. You'll find new apartment dwellers who need furniture cheap and clothes shoppers browsing through the well-worn offerings from someone else's closet. Wear clothes that are amenable to try-ons on the fly.

The Goods
Any thrift store regular knows that there's no way to predict the rewards of a thorough Goodwill dig. It depends on the time of year, the time of day and on who in the neighborhood is breaking up with their boyfriend and ditching everything he left at her place. One browse turned up a fabulous late '70s model Dallas Cowboy cheerleader iron-on T-shirt and loud, mod plastic bangles in the accessories section. Check the furniture with a mind to renovation and reupholstering.
