Bought tickets on the street for $20...and felt scammed since tickets online were $15...comedians were pretty good, but I still felt duped up until a guy by the name of Chris Rock got up on stage. (True story... There are photos on Facebook)...it was well worth it...2drink minimum was meh...but I needed a good laugh and a decent night out. Kinda glad I didn't see these reviews before I went or I never would have purchased.
It is sad how many frauds there are in comedy clubs these days. I don't mean unfunny jokes. I mean no jokes at all. I have lived in NY my whole life and have seen a lot of comedians come and go. I have seen people have off nights. But what I saw last weekend was beyond the pale. Maddog Mattern is like one of those guys in grad school who never does the assigned reading, he just reads the back cover but then feels compelled to dominate the classroom discussion and demonstrate his ignorance. There is an art to mocking an audience, it requires intelligence and sensitivity neither of which Mattern possesses. It was an exhausting experience to sit in the back and watch him try to be clever by attacking people in the audience. It wasn't even ironically funny. Anytime this ass is in the house, I'll pass.
SCAM! Racist & Disgusting Material! – If you decide to go, then don't pay any cover charge since the two drink minimum ($13 per drink) and the 18% gratuity will take all of your hard earned money. This club promotes itself as a COMEDY club, but there is nothing funny about it, except I am sure when the owners laugh over how much they have squandered from their guests.
None of the comedians had more than three minutes of solid material, rather they referred back to their old standby of feigning interest in the audience and then insulting them, which is the lowest form of comedy and should be used sparingly as it is less humorous and more abrasive.
In short, we learned from the "comedians" that all women should get an abortion, women should also shut their mouths when they're raped, pedophiles should not be punished, and Jews should be put in crematoriums again (at which point, the comedian admitted, he may have gone too far). The male comedians use this forum to live out their adolescent fantasies: one fortunate audience member was asked if she gave good head and like to spit it out or swallow. The international guests were asked of their ethnicity, but before they could answer, they were berated and not in a humorous stereotypical manner, but personally based on looks. The remainder of the show continued back to sex, the size of genitalia, how the comedians enjoyed masturbating while ignoring their partners.
I could continue about the noise from the bar just outside the room where it was so noisy that the comedians could not be heard, which was a reward. Needless to say, the best part of the show was when we walked out.
David The Voice Stein, Craig Shaft, + Daniel Mahoney – The title were just 3 of the great comedians I saw the other day. Amazing stuff. If these guys perform again I will attend again!
Raciist, Uninsipired Comedians - Don't believe good ratings! – Wow has this place deteriorated in the last few months. My wife and I had been to Stand~Up New York toward the end December of last year and had seen some amazing comedians. Professional, friendly, prepared. One or two we'd recognized from TV.
Tonight we saw a raciist host attack the audience and make blatantly raciist statements when his jokes weren't working. We saw a guy do terrible impressions of Al Pacino and Ray Romano with no actual jokes, just vulgar stuff, and some guy even got on stage a little drunk, it seemed, wearing an undershirt and proceeded to make jokes about how we were getting ripped-off on our drinks. Not funny.
We weren't alone. When we walked out we heard almost everyone saying how the show was "so-so" or "comedians were lame" or "wow that was disgusting and raciist."
Note that the two people who say the club is under "new management" and give it five stars suspiciously both say the same phrase, and neither had ever reviewed anything before.
There were one or two funny comedians, but we've seen much better shows at other clubs in the city.
Awesome Comedians – Laughed all night. Who cares what the drinks cost. I saw Godfrey, Ashy larry, and Greg Giraldo.
GREAT SHOW AT STAND UP NY – I was approached on the street to buy tickets for Stand Up NY's show. The club has recently switched to new management and has changed A LOT. A few of my friends and I went to the Friday night show and the line up included many great comedians who have been on Letterman and The Tonight Show. We had a blast. The whole show kept us laughing and the two drink minimum was really not a problem when you're out having fun with your friends at a great show. I would recommend it to anyone. Each week, the club brings in great acts with many really big names that comes by as well. GREAT TIME! DEFINITELY NEED TO CHECK OUT!
MONDAYS at stand up ny "is a joke" – Had some friends in town that got duped into buying tickets IN ADVANCE down in times square. It turns out that on Mondays they're having a contest for "musically related" acts. AKA THE WEAKEST, MOST UNPROFESSIONAL, 100% AMATEUR COMEDIANS, OPEN MIC HACK SHOW I HAVE EVER SEEN!!! It was insulting how stupid and unfunny these people were...and tickets were FULL PRICE!!! Bars and Cafes don't charge a cover for open mic nights....the acts bring their friends. DON'T GO TO STAND UP NY ON MONDAYS AND WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY. It's a JOKE in it's self. Luckily the Host was super funny and cute. she was hands down the only redeeming part of the evening.
if Management from stand up ny reads this, PLEASE spare your reputation and scratch the music monday "thing"
Liars and Theives – Watch out falling into this tourist trap. I was approached on the street at times square and sold a bill of goods. The salesman read me a list of this evenings comedians that included 5 famous names I know. We were excited to say the least. He even gave me a discount on the tix "wow". Until I arrived. What a Dump, bathrooms in the celler, microwave nachos, $15 drinks with a two drink minimum. So a $45 bucket of bears was the best i could do (5 X $9.00). $10 service charge for what ever. $12 manditory tip (how is that fair) So now i am out $120 and it just so happened to be latino night. All women and half in spanish i was lost and barely laughing. Luckily I felt obligated to finish my bucket so the last girl made me smile a bit. I love latino people so that was not my problem but it was amature night and I was expecting broadway.
