Design that soars right into the future is just one reason to love this planetarium. – The Background
The original Hayden Planetarium was an Art Deco building founded in 1935. In the early '90s, the old building was razed, and the planetarium reopened to the public in early 2000. The newly designed and rebuilt planetarium now hovers in a partially glazed cube on the original 1935 site.
The planetarium offers a space show on a one-of-a-kind Zeiss Star Projector narrated by Tom Hanks. The Heilbrun Cosmic Pathway, a descending ramp that encircles the sphere, illustrates the changing state of the cosmos through history at approximately 75 million years per footstep, right down to the present day. Also featured is the Cullman Hall of the Universe, located beneath the sphere. Here, you can view an authentic fragment of a meteorite, learn about the cosmos via interactive monitors and watch breaking science and space news on "The Astrobulletin."
