This is my third time going to Aminata's and the quality of the braids, in my opinion, has been steadily decreasing. I went in today with the right hair I needed for my braids as well as the video of how I wanted it to look. When I asked for bigger braids the person was not very receptive and continued to do as she pleased. She then proceeded to talk over my hair to another co-worker who was also working on my hair. Whenever I asked a question or make a remark about the braid she would make some rude reply and then continue to talk in another language (about me, I'm certain) with the other person. The end result looked NOTHING like what I wanted and I was very angry but I paid for it anyway. If they couldn't do the style I asked for they should have told me so right from the start instead of doing their own thing. I'm going to end up taking the braids out sooner than I expected ( a month's time, maybe). Supposedly, Aminata's daughter is the best hairbraider there but she doesn't even work there anymore, so... My first time with them was good, second time was so-so but this is the final straw for me. I'm done with Aminata's. Maybe they have some great hairstylists (like the person who did my hair the first time--she was off today, unfortunately, and I have a tight schedule) but to me, it's not worth playing Russian Roulette trying to figure out which ones are good and which should be avoided. The botched hairstyle would be a little easier to deal with if the person doing my hair had been nicer. In any case, go at your own risk.

Bad Experience – I went to this salon based on all the good reviews I found online. Unfortunately I was highly disappointed with the results. Although I do think my experience pertains strictly to the woman who did my hair. I came here for senegalese twists, and they were put in too tight, causing extreme discomfort, and in the front of my head she used such small sections that it looks crazy and i have what feels and looks like pounds of hair on my head. Everyone who has seen me said that it is too much hair, and i am now developing bumps on my scalp from the tightness of the twists so i had to take alot of the out around the edges, but i do not want to take out the whole head because i still want my moneys worth. I will be going to someone else tomorrow to get the front fixed. The whole time she was doing my hair I asked her to do it less tight many times, and she actually told me "twists hurt", but when another lady came to help with my hair near the end the side she was working on didn't hurt nearly as much which is why i attribute my experience solely to the lady who did my hair and not the shop as a whole, but this definitely does not make me want to go back there ever again, and it almost makes me not want to even risk getting my hair braided or twisted again.

The Best! – Let me start by saying I HATE to braid my hair. It takes too long, too painful and too expensive. As a result, i only braid it when I must and this is usually every 3 years. I braided it last yr and it took me 7 hours for regular box braids and about 7 days of pain. Due to a busy schedule, I decided to venture back into the braiding world. I have always heard of harlem having the best braiders so I took to google and saw the reviews about this place. I decided what the heck, it cant be any worse than my past experiences..... I got there at 10am for box braids, we negotiated the price and as soon as I sat down I had 4 people in my hair. By 12:30 my hair was done. I was in shocked!! Never in my life have I ever had braids done so quickly and I wasnt in any pain. i didnt even have to hold the roots while they braid like I have done in the past with others. They understood exactly what I wanted and delivered. I will definately be going back. The place is nice and clean like any braiding salon. Its not fancy but certainly no roaches running around. These ladies are the best and no one else will ever braid my hair again.

Hair Braiding Art – I am always pleased with my look after leaving Aminata's salon. The ladies are personable and work quickly. Instructions are taking well and each style i request with various hair colors and textured hair are made into works of hair art by these fine braiders. I would recommend this shop for quality braiding for a great price. Thank you Ladies of Aminata!

QUALITY – I have to agree with Angier when she comments on not seeing one roach in the place. I believe ive visited the shop about 4 times with people of varying colors and hair textures and she has been most accommodating to all of us.Aminata and her daughter are very skilled at their service. I get box braids just about everytime i go there and only once have i had an issue with the tightness and communication of style. As far as style goes, I decided to have black, blue and green kanekalon hair installed in my head and i came in with the idea of having the green start from the bottom of my neck and proceed to reach mid back length. About half way thru the braiding process i noticed the loose ends of the green braids being snipped away, making it so that color was being covered by the blue in the middle of my head. It wasn't anything too serious but enough for me to grumble about. lol next time ill have to be a little more clearer when conveying my style preferences.Overall I am satisfied each time i visit and will continue to give them my business :3

Excellent service – In reference to the bad review about roaches at the shop, I'm a customer and have never seen one roach when I went to get my hair done and I was in the shop for about 6 hours. I think that people are getting confused with Aminata African Hair Braiding and Sister Aminata African Hair Braiding. I go to Aminata Hair Braiding and although they have an address of 360 West 125th Street, you must enter on the Saint Nicholas Avenue side. Now at this salon, I have never seen a roach and all of the girls in the shop are pleasant. I will definitely be going back to this salon to get my hair done. The service, prices and attitudes in the shop are great.

Someone must tell the truth – Ok, I have been a customer for Aminata African Braiding for 6 mos or so. And I am in shock to see that this is the highest rated braiding salon in New York or Harlem for that matter. The first thing first Aminata's daughter is the primary reason she is getting these high rating. She is by far the best braider in the shop. She listen to you when you tell her how you want your hair styled. She braids tight without causing you unnecessary pain which is a huge plus. As much as I like her daughter one good stylist does not make a good braiding salon. The shop is nasty,if you must go there please do yourself a favor and bring your own hair. DO NOT USE THEIR HAIR. I've sat in a chair and watch hundreds of roaches crawling in and out of the hair boxes. It was horrible. Not to mention they do not care if your hair is roach infested from laying across their nasty counters. The whole shop could use a deep cleaning. The rugs, chairs, couches, counters...everything. These African salons bring in all this money but they do not invest in their own shops. It's ridiculous. If someone on average has to be in your salon 5-8 hours, wouldn't you want them to feel like they are in a clean environment and not taking home rodents and bugs. Too me you cannot have pride in what you do when the place is nasty. If the shop is dirty that's the first sign of a bad salon. That means the owner or manager's primary concern is making and keeping money. Not customer service.

Also Aminata's other braiders are notorious for doing what they want to do with your hair and not vice verse. Again, if I am paying you to do my hair why can't I get the style I want. I have seen more than enough poke out lips and nasty comments in their native language about people demanding a certain style. Overall this shop is not worth the visit. DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE HIGH RATINGS.

The look I was going for – I am a tourist from Europe. Everytime i come to New York City I want to get braids and i tried one shop from 125th. I did not like the look they gave me. So, I went online and saw reviews of Aminata African Braiding, I said I would give it a try. I was so happy with the look they gave me. These ladies were so friendly and so nice, constantly they asked me if i liked the braids while they were doing my hair. They made sure that it was not too tight. I am just too happy with these people. From now on everytime i come to America/New York, I would go to them.
