High priced terrible food – I recently ate here and was shocked at the quality of the food. Its difficult sometimes to fine a good dairy restaurant. My friends and I wanted to have a really nice dinner - and don't get me wrong, we enjoyed each others company immensely and had a very nice time - but I was extremely disappointed in the quality of the food. I could be significantly harsher in my review, but to say it simply, I will in the future choose to eat at a day-old $3.95 NYC deli cafe before I would ever again spend the $22.95 I spent on overcooked and tasteless pasta at Va Bene. Definitely do not recommend to anyone (unless I don't like you).
Ineresting differing opinions – I see all these bad reviews and I wonder.
I've been eating there for years and have never had a bad meal nor have I ever gotten my nose out of joint because a waiter seemed cold or imperious. I've eaten in the best restaurants in the world and I have to think that the people who have written such negative reviews either had an anomalous occurrence or are hyper-sensitive and don't know how or when to complain to get what they want.
Attitude!!! – The owners/ waiters thought they were doing me a favor for eatting at their terrible reasturant .
SNOBBY SERVICE – I went with a friend of mine who eats only Kosher food. Being an Italian lover, this place seemed like a great choice for us. We made a dinner reservation and I arrived a few minutes beforehand. The head waiter asked me to check my coat and left me at the bar. He then proceed to walk to the seating area - I thought he was leading me to my table, but instead he went to the back and didn't come out for about 5 mins. I ended up asking the bartender if I should seat myself (by the way, the restaurant was completely empty, except for another party of two). The same waiter was our server. He forgot to give us a wine list but asked for our drink orders, and when we pointed this out, he seemed irritated and impatient. Food was mediocre, though the flatbread was very tasty, and the tiramisu was good. Would consider returning if our server was no there (though this probably won't happen any time soon). He was forgetful and dismissive - certainly not worth it for the prices charged. I suggest you save yourself the hassle and take your patronage elsewhere.
Note: while our waiter was a disappointment to say the least, the bus boys and other staff were very polite and friendly.
A terrible Experience – I had gone to Va Bene with a party of seven. It was my cousin's birthday and one of them is Kosher. The restaurant we were planning on attending was closed for a private party, so we decided to go to Va Bene.
When we walked in, we were aked if we would like our coats checked, we declined. They left us waiting for our table, in the mostly empty restaurant for about 5 minutes. Eventually, our waited pointed and said, "the table in the back". A little surprised & off put, we proceeded to our table to wait another ten minutes for menus and drink orders. I had ordered a glass of the house Chardonnay, quite mediocre. About 15 minutes later the waiter appeared to read of the specials, then wondered off again for about another 20 minutes, to tend to a customer he apparently was more familiar with. Thank god, we were at least satiated by our second basket of the tasty flat bread and crusty white bread. We were all staring to get a little antsy, so the birthday boy signaled the waiter over to say, we have been waiting a long time and feel ignored. The waiter immediatly got defensive and said with an attitude, "I felt an attitude from you when I read the specials". My cousin had no contact with him thus far and was not willing to be spoken to like that by a waiter. Since, that is not how you speak to paying customers. Espcially customers who were willing to pay an over priced $18.95 for linguene with tomatos & basil. After a long back and forth with the waiter, who was terribly rude and unwilling to back down, the entire table walked out. On the way out we had asked for his name, we wanted to call the owner of the restaurant, he refused, he said it was not important!
I would never send my worst enemy to an establisment like Va Bene. Please spread the word to anyone who is looking for a kosher "experience"...
Good pasta, snobby service – They have wonderful food and the dishes are good sized and delicious- but the staff is snobby and they tend to rush you out. Also, look at you like you're scum if you come in without a reservation- even though they have the room!
Disappointing Business Lunch – I was first impressed with the charming decor of the restaurant, but that was soon the only positive attribute during lunch. My guest and I were seated given menus and instantly asked for our order. Asking for more time was apparantly a mistake as the waiter had to be found to take our order (only 3 tables were seated at the time). The waiter was unenthusiastic, and the food was boring and bland.
The fellow patrons competed on their cell phones with blaring Musak while the restaurant's phone rang continuously at a distracting volume.
The owner (or manager) glared at employees like a tyrant.
Upon completion, we were pressed for time and asked for the check...and asked...and asked. When it was delivered, I was bitingly told that they do not accept anything but American Express.
