Lots of promises - never deliver – I was a member a few years ago at another location that at the time had just opened up in midtown. That club was pretty nice, not crowded, and had equipment that was maintained as promised - probably only because the location was new.

I left Equinox because my new employer had a corporate deal with another (unnamed gym). Since then, I moved to Carnegie Hill, and Equinox and David Barton Gym seemed like the only reasonable choices in the neighborhood.

I was won over originally by all of the promises at this Equinox location, but in fact, I found the sales people to be extremely rude and pushy, and they were not at all welcoming about letting me try the club before putting down thousands of dollars (for what would have been my paid-in-full membership).

Supposedly Equinox prides itself on good customer service, and they want to cater to a high-end clientele. In truth, the experience is a joke! Concierge level service? My a**! Rude sales people, backed by the most unsophisticated management people that I have ever seen in any hospitality environment (and this is the case at more than one Equinox location that I recently experienced)

Couple this with equipment that cavemen must have used, and a club that looks like it hasn't been renovated since it first opened (maybe 25+ years ago??) . . . I'll be keeping my $170+ a month and taking my business elsewhere.

Equinox - terribly overrated – I switched to Eqionox after a 8 year membership in another major gym, as I was seduced by more convenient location, great facilities, range of services, and of course what they had promised to me as a new customer.

Since day # 1 i was terribly disappointed.

They refused to provide what they had promised (despite those promises being given to me in wrtiting), referring to "mistakes" made by the person who was signing me up and who promised more that she should have. As i insisted, the manager insulted me and literally kicked me out of his office, saying he was fed up with me.

One trainer skipped the session and disappeared when i was slightly late for the sessions.

I signed up for duet Pilatis and paid for the package, but only got a couple of sessons. Then they offered me to transfer my package to individual sessions - for double the price. I refused and wanted the money back. Took my FIVE Months to get my money back, as my emails and calls went unresponded (have copies of emails).

When i finally decided to cancel my membership, I got a written promise that it was going to be cancelled the first Monday of November, but now i am told that despite that I will still have to pay for November. In other words, my membership is cancelled, but I am still paying.

is there anything ethical about how Equinox conducts its business?

Upscale, Zen-inspired gym catering to the fit professional. – The Scene
With its ultra-clean, minimalist décor and its topnotch staff, Equinox raises the bar for chain health clubs. At consistently spacious facilities, the design team continually maximizes natural light and highlights organic architectural quirks. Equipment from industry standards like Cybex and Hammerstrength are paired with high-end machinery--including one specifically designed for the company by Life Fitness. Even the piped-in music (which varies from room to room) has been thoughtfully programmed. Locker rooms are uniformly spotless.

The Workout
The in-house personal-training program--which approaches strength, balance and coordination in a cyclical pattern--is so highly regarded that some independent gyms recognize it in lieu of more established national certifications. Indeed, instructors in the top tier must have academic articles published in their area of expertise. Classes are offered round the clock and range from Spinning and yoga to more unique hybrids incorporating boxing and ballet. Many studios boast sprung floors.

You will work out longer just because you enjoy being there. – Going from New York Sports Club to Equinox was like going from hell to heaven. Equinox is always clean. The staff is friendly and helpful. One never needs to wait for a machine nor is one forced to rush.

At Equinox there are always plenty of machines that are in good working order. The whole atmosphere is pleasant.

Equinox can be more expensive then some other gyms, but, at Equinox you get what you paid for.

(See if your employer has a deal with Equinox, it can ssubstantialy reduce your costs.)

there's a reason they won't tell you the cost upfront... – I visited Equinox because I was interested in joining, but had such a terrible experience with the membership staff that I walked out and never looked back. Nice gym, prohibitive cost....for a place that costs so much, the fact that they won't even let you try it first without handing them hundreds of dollars on the spot is ridiculous. Unless you have serious money to spend on working out, I'd suggest shopping around for a place without the sleazy marketing staff.

I LOVE THIS GYM! – I've tried other gyms but they don't compare to Equinox at 85th Street. This gym is SO clean and the staff is very friendly. They are always upgrading their machines. At other gyms I always felt like I was a guest but here I feel like a member of an upscale club. The staff knows me by name and are always so attentive to my needs and requests. I love the classes and I LOVE the spa! After I go spinning I get a relaxing facial or a massage. The mani/pedi room is excellent, you get your own private space...instead of a crowd at the "factory" nail salons. You can get in shape & get pampered...there's nothing wrong with a reward after a hard workout. :-)

The Best Gym Ever – This is the cleanest gym ever! The customer service is incredible and the equipment and classes are unbelieveable! I workout everyday! The Spa is 5 five stars and I've lost 30 pounds with my personal trainers.

Expensive and odd layouts – I joined here from another gym and noticed that they probably had the wrong type of designer set up the club - i.e. someone who doesn't work out. Sit down on a mat to stretch and the mirror in front of you doesn't go to the floor and is at an angle so you can't see - this is one example of many. Ambience seems nice but not optimized for working out.

Also, very expensive. Don't pay the initiation fee or full price - they give deals to any corporate, most no initiation fee and up to 25% off monthly, try the name of a bank or law firm.

Overrated Gym – it is too crowded and you have to wait for free machine. Customer service is not professional and the the worst part is the membership fee for such a crowded place. NYSC would be better with that price!

awesome gym – this is the best gym i've ever attended. my trainer is totally professional. i don't know why everyone has been having issues with this gym- maybe they have been changing things. it's DEFINITELY worth the money, considering what you get at other gyms for only slightly lower fees. the cleanliness, pleasing decor, locker rooms with nice amenities, friendly staff and great classes make such a difference that i'm willing to pay for.
