The editor is of their rocker...... – .....or they were there on a night when they were breaking in a new kitchen staff?
My and my husband's experience couldn't have been more different.
We were a good 40min early to our reseration and expected to wait, but we were promptly and graciously seated anyway.
We ordered the pre-fixe dinner and got two different appetizers, the ceasar salad and the spinach canelloni. The salad was perfectly dressed, and the dressing itself was what ceasar should be, light and lemony, not heavy and dense. The canelloni was delicious and served in a cream sauce and the dish was broiled to give it a delicous crust. It was warm and comforting on a cold night.
For our entree, we both had the ribeye, both of our steaks were cooked to perfection, and the butter sauce they were topped with was infused with wine and delicous. The dish was accompanied by haricots verts that were cooked perfectly (they tasted as though they were picked that morning), and pomm frites (I refuse to call them french fries, they were so delicous that that title doesn't do them justice).
For desert we had the cheese cake. This is the only cheese cake I've really ever enjoyed at a restaurant, and it tasted like my mother's recipie.
No, this restaurant is not at the cutting edge of haute cuisine, but, they excell at the preparation of the simple, traditional fare that they serve.
BTW I wan't expecting a restroom attendant so I didn't have cash on me to tip them. Remember to bring some cash.
Excellent Service! Excellent FOOD! Excellent Atmosphere! – I had the greatest birthday ever going to Sardi's. I was treated very well by the staff and they were extremely attentive. My boyfriend and I chose Sardi's for my birthday and we will definitely be back for other occasions or just a nice meal in Manhattan. The food was PERFECT! The best meal out that I had in a very long time. We were extremely satisfied! We started with an appetizer Sampler, which has a tease of every delectable delight that you can imagine artistically placed on one plate. Then for our Main course, we dined on Mahi Mahi and Salmon over Greens - AGAIN, Perfectly cooked. Just the way we liked it. Dessert was a beautiful final touch. We shared a cheese cake, which came to us on a plate in a round shape with drizzles of a white chocolate and raspberry sauce. Their Coffee was top shelf too. We were very pleased with everything and they made sure we were seated and served on time before he left for a Broadway Show that we planned to see. Sardi's started our most wonderful evening! We will not be a stranger to Sardi's in the future. You now have two more happy customers.
Good Service – I went with a tour group. The atmosphere is nice and the waiters are polite. The food is expensive. My dish came late so I got a free desert.
Pretty good, but not special – I fall somewhere in the middle. I would say that the atmosphere was nothing amazing, I didn't feel like the authenticity of the history of the place was nearly as prevelant as it could have been in the experience. For someone who is very familiar with Broadway it might prove exciting. The food was good but not great. We had a nice view but it was too cold in the dining room. They did a good job getting us out in time for our show and the doorman got us a cab with a smile, which was the single best part of the restaurant.
Delicious Dining and Gracious Wait Staff – Total winner. Food, friendly wait staff. Crab cakes and rib eye was delicious! Fine dining without the uptight atmospere.
Great once again! – Last week I had such a great evening, I had to write again. My brother was in the City for a quick visit. So, at the last minute, we got tickets and saw a show. As we exited and walked along Shubert Alley, we saw the sign for Sardi's and decided to have a late dinner. From the greeting at the door, to the table-side service, we felt as if we were the only ones in the restaurant (we weren't the only ones, by the way)! We each had delicious salads followed by dessert. The food was fresh and really delicious. Our expereince at Sardi's was the perfect ending to a perfect evening -- local or tourist, try it ... you won't be disappointed!
Good for theatre-goers – Sardi's may have just average food, but the service and ambiance made up for it. They understand that most people have theatre tickets and serve promptly but without rushing you. The staff was courteous and efficient. The doorman went above and beyond the call of duty to get us a cab. A very pleasant dining experience in an enduring piece of New York tradition.
Exceeded My Pre-Theatre Expectations – I wasn't expecting much based on the Editorial Review, but this place was great. On a crowded Saturday night, we got there earlier than our reservation, but they sat us immediately. We were whisked to our table where we were promptly served drinks. We then admired all the portraits around us. We never felt rushed, though they were prompt and attentive. The food wasn't spectacular, but it was worth the price. The atmosphere is really what makes it though. It's a piece of Old New York that everyone should experience.
Worth every penny – The term "living on reputation" does not apply to Sardi's. We called for a dinner reservation for 7 only 2 hours before arrival. Sardi's could not have been more accommodating, the food was better than I had been lead to believe it would be, and the service was nonpariel. We spent $150 for "our 3" (yes, they even split the credit card checks), and will gladly spend that much and more again. ... One word: We went early (6 p.m.); by 6:30 it was beginning to get crowded.
A long-running theater district legend coasts on its reputation. – The Scene
Like Bill Murray in "Groundhog Day," Sardi's is trapped in the past. Formerly a canteen for celebrities, producers and the people who write about them, today it is largely an eat-and-run novelty act for the theater bus crowd. But the faded romance of the place remains in the war-weary uniformed waiters, expansive see-and-be-seen dining room, liberally pouring veteran bartenders and colorful celebrity portraits on the walls.
Some of the house specials have languished on stage since before the debut of "Guys and Dolls." The stuffed cannelloni (veal, beef or sausage) is so heavy it takes one of the brawny younger staffers to haul it out; an anemic antipasti plate holds tasteless, icy peeled shrimp and sandy arugula. Stick to the simplest entrees, such as rotisserie roasted chicken or grilled filet mignon. And do not leave without tasting the single worthwhile gastronomic attraction: a hulking meringue-encrusted baked Alaska.
