Simply Awful – Pretty much the most expensive of all of the many Thai restaurants in this neighborhood, Siam Grill is BY FAR the worst. I don't understand how they can survive when so many better Thai restaurants are literally a block or two away. The chicken sate was overcooked and dry, and on top of that it was very expensive and you only got three pieces, almost all other restaurants give you four (although it was so terrible we couldn't even finish one). None of the descriptions in the menu actually match what shows up on your plate. We ordered a soup that was described in the menu as "clear soup with chinese cabbage, onion, zukini, and scallions"; what we got was clear soup with mushrooms, carrots, baby corn, celery, and onions. When I mentioned this to the waitress she could not have cared less. Why even put a description in the menu if the kitchen is going to make whatever it wants? Whenever I try a new Thai restaurant, I order the Pad Thai and I use it to judge the potential of the place. If a Thai place can't do a good Pad Thai, why bother, right? The Pad Thai at Siam Grill was the worst I've ever eaten; the rice noodles were crunchy, and I couldn't figure out if it was because they were undercooked or burnt.
Anyway, please do NOT eat at Siam Grill. Go eat at one of the really good Thai places farther up Ninth Avenue.
Eek! – If you're looking for tasteless thai food and rude service, this is it! I was thrillingly insulted by the end of my meal, a meal that i barely realized was thai. I did finish my meal, though, which does say it is edible, if it is the last restaraunt in NYC.
Highly disappointed – I was there for lunch and I thought the food would be okay. I gave it a shot. It wasn't so bad, accept that the food just seem to cater to people who didn't like thai food. Unfortunately, the food was bland and the host was a bit rude. I won't be returning.
A nice little neighborhood thai place – Siam Grill is a cozy little neighborhood thai restaurant run by a very friendly and polite thai couple. I'm very partial to their curries, especially the red and the massaman (although lately I've been kind of combining them by adding potatoes to the red curry). I around the corner and order from this place all the time, and I've always been very satisfied.
Authentic – This is the only Thai restaurant that I'v been to in the city where "fried egg" is on the menu. Many Thais top off spicy dishes with a fried egg, but in many places it's not on the menu and when requested, I will either get charged $1.00 extra, or get a strange look. Plus, the food is great, and as close to authentic Thai as one can get to homemade.
