Average at Best – I can almost alway tell a Chinese restuarant based on it's hot & sour soup. The hot & sour at Johns was average. The chicken wings were completely tasteless and the dumplings with hot sesame oil were bland and the sesame sauce was not thick enough. The service was decent although the place was not very busy on this Tues night. This is not even close to the best that NY has to offer as some of the previous reviews stated. Their standards must be very low. I cannot say that I will be back to Johns any time soon.
PATHETIC!!! NEVER GOING BACK!!! – I've ordered here many many times before and have never been so disappointed. Sure, restaurants have their off days, but today's food was a complete insult. I had 6 orders in total, none came close to mediocre. General Tso's chicken was just a pile of red chicken, no broccoli on the side or anything. Chicken and Brocolli was sweet. Double Sauteed Pork was sweet rather than spicy, and pork slices were too thick. Thought that was bad, here's the icing on the cake. Soy Sauce Chicken over rice, they had the nerve to give us re-cooked chicken. I'm Chinese, I know! It looks like leftover soy sauce chicken reheated in the steamer. The skin on the chicken had shrunken a bit and the color from the soy sauce had come off already. Why would you dare serve something like that to a customer?!!?!?!??!?!!! I will NEVER order from them again!
Worst service. Sent wrong order. Had to wait 1.5 hours for replacement. Never again! – We ordered a lunch delivery from John's Shanghai. They sent the wrong order (even though we ordered by number.) We called for a replacement. After waiting an hour, we called back just to be told that "we are very busy. We will send it out as soon as we can." Suffice it to say, don't bother ordering unless you are prepared to starve while waiting over two hours.
Worst food of any kind I have ever had. :( – Avoid at all costs. Went to get dinner with a friend in midtown and choose this place. Huge mistake. First off, the plates awaiting us on out table were dirty, and the plates they brought to replace them were not that great either.
I ordered the chicken and hot pepper sauce, and the chicken was unrecognizable as poultry. Oily and overcooked to the point where it tasted like little rubbery chunks of some fatty substance. Very poor quality meat, overcooked to the point of being inedible. Lots of gristle and fat. My friend had a big bowl of noodle soup with chicken and assorted other things and his chicken was similar, in that it exhibited none of the usual charactaristics you'd expect to find in poultry. White, limp, bland, chewy and fatty. We ended up hardly eating any of the meal and leaving very unsatisfied and still hungry. I will never return to this place.
Service was friendly, but that does not count for much with the food being so terrible.
Expensive and Blah – Its interesting to see how expensive Chinese food can be once you are in the midtown section of Manhattan because often times its just not worth it. John's Shanghai is one of those restaurants where the deals are non-existent and the food barely justifies the price. Don't get me wrong, the food is decent and the service is not bad, but the recent rise of prices hinder the appeal of taking this place seriously.
Best Chinese food in midtown! – I walked in during the peak of rush hour and ordered takeout, got in it less than 10 minutes. Beef & brocolli was excellent, and great value- total inc. tax was 6.25 for entree, rice and egg roll. Believe me, this is a bargain when you're used to paying $10 for a mediocre lunch anywhere else in Manhattan. You know the food is fresh even before you order it, because the topnotch staff handles an amazing turnover. The dining room is a bit crowded (which adds to the character) but pleasant decor, much nicer than a typical takeout place. Fresh ingredients, great service, good value- want more could you want? Highly recommend!
BEST CHINESE FOOD IN NYC! – I have dined at well over 25 chinese restaurants within New York City and I can honestly say that this place is without a doubt the best I have yet to find. The food is flat OUT OF THIS WORLD and the service and atmosphere is very admirable. You usually will be served within 7-10 minutes after you order depending on the size of your party. I have eaten here somewhere in the neighborhood of 40-50 times and have not once been let down. Not to mention the prices (esp the lunch specials) are an amazing bargain as well.If you are in the mid-town area and looking for some excellent chinese food, then look no further than John's Shanghai. They will take great care of you and I promise, you WILL NOT be disappointed.
Best Chinese Place You'll Ever Eat At – This place was excelent. I'm not really big on chinese food, but this place really hit the spot. Back in Missouri, you don't get a lot of this good of food. The food was great, the service was great, and the place was really clean and well kept.
