Decent food, terrible service – I walked in and the hostess said "one?" I said "yes" and she turned around and pointed at a table. Once seated, I waited about 5 minutes and ended up flagging down a waiter since no one had come to help me. He didn't say a word, but instead nodded his head briefly as if to say "Come on, what do you want?" I ordered my drink and had to ask for a menu. When I finally got my food, it was good. Nice portion, great price, though not very hot. When I went to pay my check up front, with the hostess, I asked her if she could explain my ticket, because two charges were on there that didn't make sense for what I ordered. I think one was built-in gratuity, but the other didn't make sense. Impatiently, she said "You'll have to talk to him, I can't read his writing." I said forget it and just paid. By the way, they don't take credit cards at all.

Parents Beware!! – Our high school musical group from Kansas booked this hotel through a travel agent, who requested that the group be in rooms close to each other. Four boys and 2 male sponsors were put on floor 12. One room with 4 17 year old girls were put on another floor. and my 15 year old daughter ,6 year old girl, 17 and 19 year old girl were put on floor 4. When the sponsor after checking in requested they all be put on the same floor he was told the hotel was full, we had made reservations in January, this is June. If your child is staying with a group in this hotel don't assume they will be on same floor as their sponsors, also some rooms were in very poor condition, But as a parent safety and security are my first concerns, unfortunately it is not a concern of the hotel.

Scary. – I just returned from a hotel stay there [11/23/07]. We wanted a place central to everything in NYC for my sister's birthday. Knowing it was a budget-based hotel, my expectations weren't all that high, however there were some major concerns. There was a hole in the wall from a chair, the beds are as hard as rocks, they should have invested in some new mattresses during their "rennovation". Towls were crunchy and there was hair in the bathroom. Worst part- we found 3 c0ckr0aches in our room, one of which ran across my face in the middle of the night! Disgusting, Not recommended.

A budget-based hotel in the midst of the theater district. – The Scene
Billed as New York's "Art Deco hotel," this property mimics the stylized form of Radio City Music Hall and dates back to 1931. Walk in and your gaze falls on the lobby's giant wall murals depicting the flapper life. Lobby clocks displaying time in various global zones add to the anachronistic mood. Still, the hotel is very much in the present: the Virgin Megastore and other hot spots are right next door, as are Broadway's most popular theaters.

The Details
The 1,000 rooms are large and spotless, with good-sized closets, color TVs and air conditioners. The managers have done their best to keep up with the times, so heavy draperies and dated armchairs and armoires mingle with streamlined bedspreads. The Cafe Edison features warp-speed waiters and terrific Eastern-European Jewish dishes. There is a gift shop on the premises where you can pick up souvenirs.

Bring Your Own Towels – Not only do their towels have a very funky distinct odor but it takes longer to dry off with them than it does to take a shower in the first place, and half of the towel seems to be left behind in the process. I expect rooms to be smaller in New York City...but the bathroom was just about the same size, if not smaller than, the closet in the room...it was functional but not spacious by any means. The bed was pretty much like sleeping on a cement slab, not very comfortable at all. The TV remote worked every now and then after a little "encouragement." However...the location of the hotel is AWESOME. It's just 1/2 a block away from Times Square and all the action. It would be my suggestion to the hotel that they invest in some some nice plush towels...some softer mattresses...and some new batteries and they would have a hotel worthy of their nightly rate.

Finally a deal! – I spent weeks looking online for a great budget hotel that didn't haven't awful, scarey reviews and Hotel Edison seemed like the best shot. After staying there for a few night I can honestly say I like it and I'd stay there again. I had cloudy water one time but other than that I have no complaints. The room is small and a bit old fashioned, but definetly clean. Great hotel for the location and price.

Broadway's old-time eatery has aged well. – In Short
Pink walls and a vaulted sky-blue ceiling overlaid with white art-nouveau designs lend glamour to the Edison Hotel's humbly anachronistic restaurant, which continues to draw hotel guests, Times Square tourists and midtown workers to its many-storied beige booths. Blueberry and banana-walnut pancakes stand out among the bountiful and well-prepared breakfast offerings, while borscht and matzo ball head the list of daily soups. Most welcome of all, the prices stay true to the restaurant's old-time character.

Get what you pay for – At $149 a night you won't find luxury at these prices, however, you will get a clean room in a hotel situated in close proximity to all the action Times Square can offer. Subway Stations, Restaurants and shops are only a short walk from the hotel. The rooms are very small. In fact, if I lie perpendicular across the bed with my arms stretched, I can touch the opposite walls with my feet and hands at the same time. Now, that's small! Bathrooms are equally tiny with minimal space to put your toiletries. But like I said, at only $149 a night (or less if you do your homework) to be in the middle of all the action, it's good value. Be sure to ask for a room high up as possible and away from the elevators to cut down on the noise.

Great Deal – Living on Long Island I rarely spend a night at a hotel in Manhattan but this was worth it. Upon check-in we were given a free upgrade to a suite. The security was great! We came home late (early morning) and we felt very safe because of the guards checking roomkeys. I would absolutely stay here again.

Great place for eavesdropping – I often find myself with time to kill in Times Square, which is a shame since I don't love this area. But if I'm looking for a quick bite before going to a show, I almost always go to Cafe Edison. They have very quick service which is great when you don't have much time. The food is average: breakfast food, soups, salads, sandwiches, etc. It's the conversations that make this a fun place to be. I always find myself sitting next to someone in the theatre industry- interesting to hear ideas hashed out while having a quick bite to eat.
