If you want beers and drinks, this pub I’m sure is excellent. If you want some simple food, continue reading.
We're complete tourist in NY and needed something quick to eat on a late Sunday (19ish). Sat down in an almost completely empty restaurant (1 other couple, that already looked upset). An empty restaurant should have warned me this is not an eating place, but we were very hungry. The waitress was friendly and quick for order and beverages. I ordered smoked salmon for starter and the philly steak for dinner. My wife got french onion soup for starter and seafood mix for dinner.
Out of these 4 (simple!) dishes only 1 actually passed the bar being acceptable and that was the smoked salmon (it's real hard to fail it though, a bed of salad and a few slices of readymade smoked salmon on top). The french soup tasted like dishwater and i wouldn't be surprised that was the main ingredient in the soup. My wife of course refused to eat it and sent it back out. Then for dinner, my wife’s mixed seafood contained fish that wasn't cooked properly. Some of her fish slices were sent out to the kitchen to be properly recooked. When it came back my wife was NOT impressed. She left the fish pieces (I’m sure it will be used for the fish soup the very next day).
I got the philly cheesesteak, which in all fairness looked like a standard sandwich with meat and cheese for filling together with some fries. Hardly worth the $17 being stipulated in the menu. And sure enough, it was a standard freckin sandwich with unclassified meat and some cheese. On top of all that there were some leftover cartilage neatly embedded in it, which made me break off a piece of a tooth.
For this might feast, were we only charged $70. Please!, save your money and go to any other place in NY or the world. Your local Subway serves much much better sandwiches and soups for a tremendously better price.
As always, if no one is eating in the restaurant IT IS a bad place!!
Great food, great atmosphere, great staff – Jim Brady’s is a home from home for many locals like myself, but in addition also welcomes business folk and visitors to NYC – you never know who you will end up talking to at the bar. The food is superb large portion Irish fare with excellent rotating specials, never had a bad meal in the place. It has a charming décor with comfy booths in the restaurant, so you can have an intimate meal if you wish. Great music as well, including occasional live bands.
Excellent service from all staff, combined with the high quality food, is the reason we keep going back.
classy, neighborhood bar/restaurant – I love Jim Brady's. It's a great place to grab a quick beer or have dinner and talk with the locals. I've made many good friends there. I wish i could go more often. Say hi to Joe and Billy for me.
Very Disappointing – After reading other citysearch reviews, I was looking forward to the night. Typically, one can't go wrong with an Irish pub and good music. The place was crowded and hot, but we worked our way through and settled at the bar. There were four bartenders, but we could not get a drink or something to eat. The bar was littered with empty glasses, dirty plates, etc. The bartenders were all socailizing at the far end of the bar and were more interested in the entertainment than customers. When I finally made eye contact with one of them, he actually shook his head and looked away. After about 30-45 minutes, we left and headed over to the seaport area.
Great Service and awesome food – My friend's and I were downtown for and event and we needed a place to eat after. We decided to give Jim Brady's a shot.
The moment we walked in a sweet Irish man came and welcomed us into the restaurant. We sat at a great table in the front near the bar. Drinks were immediately brought to our table.
I was surprised to see how extensive the menu was for Irish place. They have all the Irish classics along with almost anything else you can imagine. I was even more surprised as to how delicious the food was. All of our meals were great and the service was unbelievable!
We truly enjoyed ourselves and by the time we left I felt like some of the staff members were my old friends. The owner even gave us a hug as we walked out the door!
I cannot think of one reason why anyone should not come to Jim Brady's. Even if you live uptown is worth making the trip down. I plan to come back here again and again!!!
Best downtown neighborhood bar, by a mile – What a surprise! You'd never guess from the outside what a cool, friendly place this is. I recently started working in the neighborhood, and stuck my head in after a long day's labors. Joe, one of a few Irish bartenders there, rules the room, and makes everyone feel comfortable. Scrolling through the reviews here, I'm not surprised that the vast majority are as enthusiastic about this place as I am. My only worry is that is gets "discovered" and loses its character.
Joe the Bartender – This is one of a few places that I will give a rave review to, but I don't want everyone else to (and crowd me out and not let me save seats). It all rests with Joe. Joe The Bartender. It doesn't get much better than him, and he's always there to chat, help, or banter (if that's what you're in the mood for). One of my favourite people. Cheers to Joe x
Great Burger and Great Bartender – I travel to NY once a month and I almost always have one evening that I need to eat out by myself. I always chose to go to Jim Brady's not only for one of the best burgers in NY but because of Joe the bartender. Being by myself and eating alone Joe always makes me feel at home with great conversation cold beer and good food. I highly recommend Brady's.
Joe - Thanks for making me feel at home!
Look elsewhere. Poor service. Lousy food. Expensive in that you pay for what you don't get. – My girlfriend and I were matching my friend up on a blind date with one of her girlfriends and decided this would be a nice place for them to meet after work (based on my friend's opinion as well as other encouraging reviews here). I'd not been here before.
The place has character and is attractive albeit quirky inside, charming at first sight. That's where it ends. The bartenders are lousy and do not pay attention to their customers -- they spend more time conversing with each other than serving. At least we weren't the only people being ignored, if that's any consolation. Their service can be summed up here: We were saving a seat for the female-half of the blind date who was running a little late because she got stuck at work. We chose a corner of the bar near the front where we could be out of the way. I left my coat on the back of the stool to save it (3 of us, 3 stools, fair enough?) so that the fourth person could sit when she arrived. Some guy came in alone and asked if anyone was sitting there. My girlfriend politely said we were saving it for the blind-date who would be arriving momentarily. At that point the bartender lectured us that we weren't allowed to save seats and went on about it for a couple of minutes. Adding to the ridiculousness was that the bar wasn't crowded, other seats were available and this bartender was showing more hospitality to a party of one than to a party of 3 soon to be 4, who were drinking and looking at menus! And we were saving the seat for a woman, mind you! We ignored We ordered appetizers: nachos and chicken fingers. Both were awful. The chicken fingers were a cutlet that had been sliced up after it was cooked and was extremely greasy (dripping grease).
The bill was high and I'm only saying that because the quality and service were extremely lacking. First and last time I will ever go there, last time for my friend, too. I enjoy many kinds of bars. No wonder this place was empty by 730 on a Friday night. Avoid it!!
Best neighborhood bar ever – When I had some tough times, Jim Brady's was the place to get a pint and talk to Joe the bartender. When I was getting married, my friends and I went there the night before to celebrate. When my wife and I got back from our honeymoon, we headed to Jim Brady's for a few drinks and some good food. On 9/11, I have a pint there to remember those we lost. On St. Patrick's Day, I go for some of the best food and company you can get -- plus a bit of live music and some dancing.
If you've never been, you're missing out. If you went and had a bad experience, go again -- I'll buy you a drink...
