A unique, family-run gem where modern masters mingle with the stars of tomorrow. – The Background
Stone, a former lawyer, got into the gallery business when his artist clients began to pay him in paintings. His idiosyncratic space features both museum-quality shows of abstract expressionist masters--Stone's 1994 retrospective of Willem de Kooning was widely preferred to the one at the Metropolitan--and new work by relative unknowns.
Though many of the younger artists share a fairly traditional bent, Claudia Stone, the founder's daughter, insists that the gallery has always been ecumenical. She is quick to point out that, if her father is primarily famous for having discovered Wayne Thiebaud and Richard Estes, he was also the first to exhibit Eva Hesse and Andy Warhol. Don't miss the back gallery (on the far side of the small outdoor garden), which has spectacular shows of tribal art from Stone's extensive private collection.
