Many a Manhattan foodie has heard tell of this masterful, homey Italian restaurant, and made a mental note to check it out the next time they are in Astoria -- which is, of course, never. More's the pity. There are both Abruzzese classics here as well as some amazing original dishes, rich and piquant, and all served in the warmest and most hospitable of surroundings.
Two-faced manager, not the best in New York – Food was overpriced. Plus, I saw the manager (short guy, I don't know his name) disrepsect one of his waiters. Makes me think that they're all phonies. My husband and I liked Babbo the best, as far as Italian in NYC.
The only thing really special is the prices – The food here was decent, not exceptional by any means. The waiter recites a long, long list of specials, which doesn't change that much from week to week. The reason for so many specials is that they don't have to list the prices... so brace yourself when the check comes. $35 for short ribs with polenta - a price more appropriate for a Michelin starred restaurant in Manhattan, if you ask me. The service in the eatery was fine, but more obsequious than actually hospitable in a fine dining experience. The service in the wine bar, conversely, was very good.
Great food. Friendly atmosphere – We heard about Trattoria from a friend in the neighborhood. The service is great, the staff are knowledgeable and the meal is an experience. Trattoria was our favorite place to take visiting family. Highly recommended!
Never coming back – I went for my friend's birthday and I have to say, overall, I doubt any of us will ever go back. The food is good but not the best I've ever had. The waitstaff was stiff and pushy about the wine, even though most of us weren't drinking because we drove there. And the manager told my friend that the waitstaff was just being 'attentive.' If that's true, then we don't want their 'attentive' service. We can find better elsewhere.
What's so great about...? – Maybe because I went there for weekday lunch so that possibly they cut corners or something, but their Zagat score of 27 for food is way overrated. Pizza with olives & anchovy was extremely salty and oily (the center of dough was so soggy that I couldn't fold to hold) while chicken for main dish was so bland that I assumed the chef may have forgotten to put any salt at all (accompanied vegetables were OK, though). I truly wonder if the chef tasted them before serving. Wait staff were attentive and satisfactory, but they cannot make up for disappointing yet high-priced dishes. Maybe I wasn't lucky and picked the wrong day or something, but I highly unlikely would give it a try again.
Best Chef – This restaurant has great Italian food. The pumpkin ravioli's are out of this world, as well as all of there main dishes. The chocolate pizza is the best. The staff is very pleasant, service is "A" one. The food is always very fresh.. Most of the time you do need reservations. The best of all the "CHEF" is the best cook in the world.........
Mediocre Food that is Very Overpriced – I've been to this restaurant for lunch a few times and have been sadly disappointed each time. Although the food is not bad, it is not very good either and worth the high cost.
I was there recently and ordered the beef carpaccio and was sadly disappointed. It was covered in what I think was olive oil, was a very small quantity, and I could not even taste the meat with all of the oil on it. What is the point of carpaccio if you can not taste the meat? Note - I had a piece of the carpaccio by itself - no condiments or bread.
On the positive side, the fresh bread, and in particular the flat bread was excellent. For the entree I had the buffalo sausage. All I could taste was the black pepper in the sausage. Was the meat in there chicken, beef, pork, veal, buffalo? - I have no idea, all you can taste was black pepper. The portion was quite small, three links and three pieces of broiled potato and string beans. I understand this is lunch but for a $63 dollar lunch (tax, tip incl. 1 glass of house wine, no dessert or coffee) this was way overpriced.
In summary - don't waste your money. Although the service was good and the ambiance is nice look for another location and get a meal that satisfies your palate.
You MUST have the chocolate Pizza! – The food is amazing and the atomosphere is great! Live music! Attentive wait staff! Great! But, the best thing by far is the chocolate pizza! Do not skip this desert or you'll be sorry! Big enough to split between a lot of people1
Nice Staff, Good Service – We ate here once and I thought the lasagna was good and freshly prepared the "Garganelli Pomodora" was also good and the gentleman was nice enough to offer serving a 1/2 portion for my guest that did not have a big appetite at the time. Prompt service and attention was apparent during the meal from start to finish.
Best Italian Restaurant By Far.... – My husband and I have been going to this restaurant for at least 4 of the 5 years we have been together. We bring friends & family here as well. And our last NY meal before our wedding was here. We consider ourselves "foodies" and are VERY picky about our food & wine when dining out. This is partly because we are pretty good cooks ourselves, so we have high expectations when we dine out. Needless to say, this place is the best italian restaurant there is. We've gone to ones throughout the city and have found one or two other we think are very good as well (Il Cortile, to name one), but this is by far our favorite. Rocco is wonderful & has made me dishes not on the menu, simply because I had a craving. We've NEVER had a dish here that wasn't fabulous, nor has anyone we've ever taken here. We've gone just the 2 of us and with groups as large as 10. not one complaint! From appetizers to the wine (ask Vinnie for a reccomendation) to salads or dessert, you really can't order a bad thing! There are nights you can't get in without a reservation and then there are other nights where you can. Sometimes you have to wait even when you have a reservation, but isn't it nice to know you won't be forced or rushed from your table if you want to dine longer than the restaurant anticipated? Vinnie has also been known to have trays of white and red wine served to anyone waiting for a table...If you want incredible italian food and excellent service, come here. When the day comes we move, this will be the #1 thing we miss about Astoria.
