Best Sangria ever! – This is my second time at el olivo, and i couldn't go on without writing a review. This place is amazing. The thing i liked the most was the sangria... (my husband and i had to try them both) we ordered a half pitcher of one of each, white and red. My personal favorite was the red.
As an appetizer we ordered the:
Mussels: which were Great, we had to order more bread to dip the sauce in.
Shrimp in garlic sauce: Im a big fan of shrimp and let me tell u this shrimp was juicy
Pulpo al olivo: this octopus was fresh and tender the sauce was full flavored as well.
For our entree my husband ordered a Paella Marinera. The paella was very good the only down side about it was that it only came with half a lobster, but we then realized it was good enough because our waiter put aside a pot full with the rest of the seafood and rice!!
I ordered the Parillada that came with all type of seafood, it had lobster, shrimp, clams and mussels and a filet of Telapia. We really couldn't finish it because it was all to much. we couldn't even go for coffee, because of how stuffed we were.
Honestly i enjoyed every bit of it, the
staff was great too! they were very attentive and friendly three thumbs up guys, keep up the good work. And i will definitely be back for some more Sangria
P.S. I found it very odd that there two comments on the bottom that were related to animal food. Its smells kinda "fishy" for someone to put that up.
Im also glad i didn't listen to the bad reviews. i would definitely recommend people to have a piece of spain.
I cannot speak for others But it would be a shame to miss! – We went to Olivo at 7pm on a saturday night, of course, had I listened to the previous reviews we would have lost out on an amazing experience! Judging by the packed house after 8pm, alot of people know the drill! The food was awesome, the service was great and we had a fabulous time! the mussles were the most amazing, we ever had, we ordered a dinner portion and we counted 58 mussles! it was incredible! I suggest when it comes to reviews you should make your own mind and we are glad we did'nt listen to the negative reviews! Bravo!
Dont go unless u like cat food – Place suck.
Good .... but..... – Ok - I really really really liked this place the first time I went. The stuffed chicken breast was to die-for. However, the next time I went, a week later, I swore the chicken was NOT cooked. I was terrified that I was eating chicken that wasn't fully cooked. I didn't send it back - just stopped eating... dessert (nutella/banana crepes) were absolutely delicious. Just be weary --- I still like this place, but my chalk it up to one-bad experience. (Let's hope so anyway).
Insulting that they would call this Spanish food.. – Not even close to Spanish food. I'm from Spain, and I find it very insulting that this restaurant is known for its cuisine from Spain. Not only are the owners not from Spain, which means nothing; the restaurant itself is nowhere near Spanish food. They have mozzarella sticks on the menu. I mean come on. And to top it all of I was on the toilet for 2 days. Never again, it's a shame that people would go to this restaurant and think that this is Spanish food. Maybe Colombian, or Puerto Rican, but not from SPAIN. Very disappointed!!! If you want authentic Spanish food, I just had a lovely dinner at Tia Pol, in the city and the chef was from Spain, and you can tell, the food was so authentic, and delicious.
Disaster – This place did not inspire confidence when we saw how few people were inside. It got worse when I saw the cover of the menu with a goofy picture of a lobster that looked like it was from 1975. First of all, what authentic Spanish restaurant puts a basket of nachos on your table with a spicy dipping sauce? The salad was a joke (iceberg lettuce, shredded carrots, a tomato slice and a piece of cucumber). The manchego cheese app. special was ok, because, honestly, how can that be botched? The chicken castellana was not good at all (I almost thought it was two boneless thighs until I cut into the second piece) and the flavors were cloying and clumsy (I don't know why I expected fresh artichokes when the waiter described the dish). It was just all very disappointing.
whoops – A list to indulge your senses.
1. Not traditional spanish cuisine (french bread, iceberg salad with french dressing, chips and salsa)
2. Unattentive staff
3. Over-priced pitcher of sangria ($23.99!)
4. Horrible paella, uncle bens rice, (which was immediately spent back)
5. There is no acclaimed tapas menu
6. Upon receiving the bill, I noticed in place of the whited-out paella, we were charged $7.00 for our complementary 2 wedges of lettuce and out of season vegs.
7. The octopus appetizer that I shared with my date was the highlight of the meal (and of course the company). It was braised in a red sauce, and was extremely tender and succulant. The sangria was mixed to perfection, not too much brandy and plenty of juicy fruit.
A Pleasant Suprise – I had no idea a place like this was in my own neighborhood! The seafood paella is a great dish to order (for 2). The portions are generous as my CPA would agree. The decor could use a little something extra but the establishment is extremely clean. Try some of tapas too! They're as good as they come and don't forget to get plenty of vitamins from your pitchers of Sangria!
SPAIN in ASTORIA – Spain and Astoria are two of my favorite places. Apparently some early reviewers of this restaurant didn't realize that this is a Spanish restaurant in the US, where salads are regularly served, so they oblige. The tapas are wonderful (especially the stuffed mushrooms & calamares), the salsa is delicious and doesn't come from a can, the entrees are enormous (get the fried potatoes as a side) - I always end up taking some home. My family and I have been dining at El Olivo regularly since it has opened, almost 10 years ago so we have pretty much had everything on the menu with no complaints. Also, they are great for large groups, as we often descend there en masse. Make reservations for evening and weekend dining. Service is great and welcoming. There is no other place that tops it for the price.
