A very large, first-rate wine and liquor store with a fair-to-good wine stock and a very good range of speciality spirits, including sake and shoju.

Wow. Third visit to this place. It's convenient and it looks so welcoming from the outside. Great looking shop, with what appears to be a wonderful selection. Not once have I ever had any of the help address or look at me while they took my money. On my last visit (and trust me, it's my last) the paunchy clerk handed me a credit card slip as he simultaneously chatted with a coworker and shoveled food into his mouth - all the while with his head turned away. I'll save them the trouble of interrupting their chats and feeding time in the future. There's plenty of better options here in Brooklyn.

Who do they think they are? – An elderly neighbor went in last week with a long Christmas gift list. As in previous years, she counted on the salespeople to assist with her purchases. Although it was only 11:00 am, she waited for some time and asked a couple of people was there anyone to help her. A young woman answered "Can't you see we're busy?" She tried to speak to another employee, who was equally short with her so she left without buying anything.

No employee should be allowed to bark at a customer "Can't you see we're busy?" They have a table and chairs in the back for wine tastings. In consideration of her age, she should have been offered a seat while she was waiting. That would only have taken a moment.

I later called to complain to the manager Dominique. All that was necessary to fix it would have been for him to say "I'm sorry. Please ask your neighbor to come back this afternoon and I'll help her myself." BUT NO! He said that "We were not rude to your neighbor. She came in here and stood in the middle of the aisle. If it were anytime but Christmas, we would have helpled her."

Where should she have stood - outside, in the 25 degree cold? (I used to work at Macy's. The neighbor worked at Bloomingdale's years ago. Does he think he's got a monopoly on "busy?") He continued to labor the point until I hung up on him. I don't know how to make this up.

How could a manager argue about his staff being rude when someone who asked for help walked out without buying anything?

In our neighborhood there are many who like me are of Middle Eastern background. Respect for the elderly is a strong value in our culture. Ever since I moved to Brooklyn Heights 35 years ago, I have heard the local merchants whine about how much money the neighborhood's more prosperous residents spend in Manhattan. Well if these guys want us to respect them as part of our community, they should act like part of our community and show a little consideration for the aged.

P.S. I brought her to Brooklyn Wine Exchange. They were super nice and helpful!

super helpful in wine selection! – I had a Spanish tapas party and needed Spanish wines for the event. I went to Heights Chateau based on a friend's recommendation and found the place to be really cute and well organized with a large selection of wines, especially Spanish which I was looking for. I worked with the wine buyer and she was extremely helpful. I told her about the tapas we were having and she helped pick out a mixed case of Spanish wines for the party. The wines worked out really well and were enjoyed by my friends!

looks charming, but poorly managed with sub-par selection – I really wanted to like this place-it looks so lovely! and was recommended to me for my wedding. So I went there with my fiance for a tasting a few weeks ago--not only were the wines they served less-than-average, but they weren't what we asked for based on our menu and were more expensive than they should have been given the quality. The more we spoke with the shopowner, the clearer it was that she knew very little about wine and was basing her recommendations on what she had heard from others. I'm not a wine afficionado but I know what's good and expect the wine store staff (especially someone giving me a tasting) to know more than I do! I wish I could remember the pink sparkling wine she recommended for our wedding toast because it was absolutely undrinkable -- I sent the owner a nice note saying that the wines didn't suit us and that while we appreciated their time, we were planning to buy our wines elsewhere. They then sent us an invoice for the awful wines we tasted--so tacky! I would never buy wine from this store and would urge others to avoid it completely

A truly great store – I moved to Brooklyn 8 years ago and one of the things I missed most about my NYC life was the wine store options - at the time there were not nearly as many as there are now. I found Heights Chateau and was impressed by its great selection and service, seduced by it's classic and simple design of wine and wood. I loved the long walk down Atlantic Ave to get there, and still do - it's my go-to store for a special gift or a good cheap find to make me happy any day of the week. I've been a regular customer ever since... I've always appreciated the staff's friendly greeting and offer to help me navigate the new arrivals, of which there are many which keeps me guessing (for better or worse). I referred a friend to the store recently, who checked it out on citysearch and shared news of a nasty review to me - I was shocked. I couldn't disagree more. So I'm writing to set the record straight , and if you don't believe me check out the latest and greatest reviews from Zagat 08, another city guide made by and for the people...Heights received top ratings across the board for it's store, staff and prices.

Get your wine elsewhere! – The 'chateau' finally managed to lose my business- and looking back, I'm at a complete loss how I supported these guys in the first place. For starters, the staff is aloof, rude, and unhelpful (blithely ignorant). I once went in for a rioja, the response i got was: "rioja's are boring to me". I started wondering: at what point did anyone ask you what you were interested in? That thought quickly gave way to: perhaps this place hires mentally retarded staff through a deployment program. Don't even get me started on how inconsiderate the nitwit that answers the phone is- firing his a$$ might be a good start.

In short, there are plenty of other options in the heights that provide knowledgeable service with a smile, and are significantly CHEAPER. I'd sooner order online any day than give my money to these guys.

A well-regarded shop since 1986, with shelves full of values and a cellar-full of rarities. – The Scene
Regulars are quite aware of the value of Heights Chateau, judging from the brisk Saturday afternoon traffic. The friendly staff and generally laid-back feeling are reason enough to visit, but a careful look at the shelves reveals a selection chosen with an eye for the quality-price ratio rather than a mindless mix of cheap and pricey.

The Goods
If you happen to be heading for Middle Eastern food at one of the BYOs down the street, stop by Heights--there are plenty of bottles in the under-$15 range, and a wide selection of sparkling wines, which, if you haven't already discovered, make a particularly felicitous match with spicy food. There's also an extensive collection of ports and an excellent selection of premium tequilas.

Best in NY – This wine store far outshines the competition. Not only is the staff friendly and approachable, but they really know their stuff. Whever I go in, the recommend a great wine to me to complement my meal. You don't have to be a wine expert to shop here.

They never push me to spend over my wines from the inexpensive to the "special occassion" selection. They also have the biggest tequila selection I have ever seen.

This is a real neighborhood store that cares about its patrons and thier business.

Perfect 10 – You will not have a better experience when selecting wine than the time you spend w/ Judy and Co. @ the Heights! Free delivery to the city and easy access to the staff via email make shoping in Brooklyn as easy as if it was down the block. Combine the expert advice, convience and the outstanding value... what more could you ask for???

The one time they didnt have the wine i was looking for, Judy offered to put together a case or 1/2 case based on my criteria... what could be better? My heartfelt thanks for single-handedly taking my wine enjoyment to a new high.
